Chronicles Draft Picks combines the mash-up of Panini brands that is Chronicles with the college uniform look that Draft Picks is known for. Chronicles includes a variety of different brands, including some from different sports. There is a huge amount of variety as Panini draws from over 20 brands to create this release.
As expected for a Draft Picks release, most cards won’t hold their value due to the fact players were are their collegiate uniforms. Last year this was not a very popular set, as evidenced by collectors still being possible to find retail boxes on shelves a full year later.
Release formats for Chronicles Draft Picks remain mostly identical to last year. A slight change was made to hobby boxes for 2022-23, with boxes including 6 packs of 8 cards instead of 2 packs of 24.

Panini returns its First Off The Line boxes to this release with an exclusive super-rare Cracked Ice parallel. Otherwise, these have the same expected output as the hobby boxes.
This year’s iteration of Chronicles Draft Picks features at least 20 different brands according to Panini. Each brand features its own design and parallels.
The huge amount of brands means Chronicles has plenty of variety, but no real cohesive identity.

Furthermore, this is the first mainstream release featuring this year’s rookie class headlined by Paulo Banchero and Chet Holmgren. Chronicles Draft Picks consists mostly of rookies, with some big NBA stars mixed in. This year’s rookie class doesn’t have too many big names and is expected to be mediocre overall, similar to last year.
A ton of autos and relic pieces are in the release with an average of four expected in each hobby box. Additionally, many of the brands featured in Panini Chronicles Draft Picks 2022-23 Basketball have super-rare 1/1s, including Contenders Draft Ticket and Spectra Nebula.

Chronicles Draft Picks has an extensive and chaotic checklist.
The base Panini Chronicles Draft Picks basketball set consists of 25 cards with no less than ten different parallels.

The Absolute brand consists of green, red, blue, black, gold, explosive, and kaboom inserts. Not all of the colors have the same checklist.
All of the Donruss and Donruss Optic inserts carry a set size of 25 with at least 10 parallels.
Rated rookies are a big part of the Donruss Optic portion of Chronicles with 11 different parallels.
Substantial Rookie Swatches is not an exaggeration, as these fabric swatches cover almost half of the card.
The Essentials and Recon brand each have a set size of 25 cards while Luminance carries a set size of 50.
Flux is a product featuring bright yellow colors and an electricity theme.

The Gamma Rays brand features a backdrop of circles similar to a hypnosis pattern with colored rays shooting out from the middle. Maybe they are trying to hypnotize you into thinking the design is good.
One of Panini’s most popular brands receives two inserts in this Chronicles Draft Picks release.
The long-running brand arrives to Chronicles with a variety of space-themed parallels.
One of the biggest Panini brands alongside Optic and Prizm, Select features over 10 parallels for a set size of 25.
Spectra has a total set size of 100 among the three brands with a heavy space theme for it’s parallels.
As a brand, Threads has a heavy focus on jersey swatches and a set size of 30 cards.

The second Select insert features autographed cards with players pictured mid-air.
The Limited set featured in Chronicles utilizes the iconic Limited design with a checklist of 24 cards.
As you might expect, Gold Standard features a ton of gold in it’s card design. It has a set size of 26 and includes an autograph with a jersey swatch.
The Illusions brand feature a variety of unique designs that resemble optical illusions.
This insert carrying the Donruss brand features the same design as Turn of the Century had last year. Unlike the other Donruss inserts it has a set size of 22 cards.
Freshman Fabric Signatures feature an autograph and a jersey swatch, with a set of 23 cards.
College Roll Call consists of 24 autographed cards with 8 possible parallels.

Base Contenders and the Optic edition have sets of 25 cards with 8 parallels. Every card has a design similar to the Rookie Tickets from the main Contenders release.

Prices for hobby boxes start at $150, so there is a low barrier of entry to start investing in Chronicles Draft Picks Basketball. The question however, is if it is a worthwhile investment.
With this being only the second year of Chronicles Draft Picks, we don’t have a ton of historical data to judge this off of. But if last year is anything to go off of, investing in hobby boxes to resell later is a waste of time.
For the 2021 release, boxes had a starting price of $175. One year later, you can find sealed boxes for only $100. Obviously, this is a small sample size and so it isn’t entirely reliable, but I believe it shows the poor public reception for this product.
Panini lowering the release price to $150 further shows a lack of demand that makes investing in boxes a poor decision.
Unsurprisingly, it is very easy to find rookies in Chronicles Draft Picks. However, cards featuring collegiate uniforms typically don’t increase in value in the long term. An example includes Cade Cunningham, the biggest name in the draft, having a PSA 9 sell for $10.
However, there are a few exceptions to this general rule. Highly graded, short print cards tend to be valued higher, such as this PSA 10 Scottie Barnes selling for $129. In general, the only way to profit from this product is exceptional luck, so it is not a sound method to invest.
Panini Chronicles Draft Picks Basketball is an inexpensive product that can be great for new collectors or those who like the collegiate look.
That said, if you are looking for a product to invest in, Chronicles Draft Picks is not it. They likely won’t hold their value long term due to being college uniforms, and public desire for these releases just isn’t there. It can be a great product to collect your favorite college basketball players, but a subpar one for investors.
