Panini is back with their third installment of the Panini Origins series. This NBA set is very rookie heavy. With this in mind, the 2021 NBA rookie class is already showing signs of being a deep and talented one; this is a good year to look into this product. With players like Evan Mobley, Scottie Barnes, Cade Cunningham, and Josh Giddey already showing star potential, this may be the year to invest. Without further ado, here is our full 2021-22 Panini Origins Basketball review.
Panini had its first Origins release three years ago, in the 2018-2019 season. The product has caught on partially because of its heavy rookie focus. Each box will land you about two hits. Those hits will either be an autograph or a relic; you are not guaranteed one of each, though.
The 2019-20 Panini Origins Basketball Hobby Box was the inaugural release. Get one on eBay.
Panini Origins 2021-2022 will be released on March 11, 2022.
The thing that sets Panini Origins apart from other products on the market is their focus on the rookie class. As a result, this is one of the few products out there that you can feel confident that you will be walking away with a quality rookie card after opening a box. While it is never a guarantee, their odds are in your favor with this product.
One of the major gripes about this product is its price. It is a quality product and, in turn, will cost a fair amount to get your hands on. Many reviewers online said they did not feel as if only two hits in a box were worth over $500.
We will be covering the hobby box and the twelve-box hobby box case.
The hobby box comes with only one pack in which there are seven cards. This may not sound like a lot for $500. However, the value comes in the quality of the cards. Out of those seven cards, you will be receiving two autographs/relics along with two parallels as well. The hobby box will cost around $500, although you could find it for a little less if you find the right deal.
The twelve-box hobby box case will feature twelve-packs and a grand total of 84 cards. Out of those 84 cards, you will be receiving 24 autograph/relic cards, along with 24 parallels as well. A case will cost a pretty penny, selling for $5949 retail.
The base set for Panini Origins 2021-2022 has not yet been released; however, based on last year’s set, there will be 90 cards in the base set. Of those 90 cards, 20 of them were rookies. Therefore, things could fluctuate a little in this year’s set.
Three inserts that will be added to the product this year are Big Bang, Origins Story, Originals, and Origination.
Per the norm for Panini Origins, there will be a handful of parallels in this product.
While you are not getting too many cards from this box, it is still a very high-value product. The patches on these cards are incredible. Along with this, many of the autographs and patches from this product are from rookies. Once again, with this draft being as stacked as it is, these rookie patch autos may be worth a large amount of money in the future. If you pull the right one, it will quickly pay off the cost of the box.
Also, the parallels will be relatively low-numbered as well. This is a very expensive box for a very high-quality product. The price point is not for everyone. However, if you have the funds for this product, it is definitely worth checking out.
Let’s look at how previous releases have fared in terms of value.
2020-21 Jimmy Butler #17 (Raw) | $20 |
Devin Vassell /10 Patch Auto (Raw) | $404 |
2019-20 Ja Morant Patch Auto (Raw) | $1,000 |
The picture that emerges from the singles is clear. If you don’t pull a rookie patch, you are unlikely to make back the money invested in a box. Meanwhile, drawing an average rookie, you will more or less recoup your investment. If you pull a star, you can double the price. Of course, you need to ask yourself if there are any Ja Morant’s in the current rookie class.

You can get the new box for $500. Is it an excellent long-term investment? Let’s take a look at how boxes from the previous years have performed.
2019-20 Panini Origins Basketball Hobby Box | $724 |
2020-21 Panini Origins Basketball Hobby Box | $555 |
The wax boxes do surprisingly poorly on the resell market. Last year’s box sells for just a bit more than the current price. Meanwhile, the Ja Morant and Zion Williamson years are worth more but not much more. So there are probably better boxes to hold than this one.
In conclusion, the 2021-2022 Panini Origins product is shaping up to be a very good one this year. It is a high-end product. However, it also comes with a high price tag. Therefore, if you find it fits your price range, we recommend getting it if you believe in the rookie class.
There is a chance at getting a stake in the next face of the league. Evan Mobley is already proving himself to be a jack of all trades at a prominent man position, Josh Giddey has developed an all-around game that made him the youngest player ever to get a triple-double, Cade Cunningham is already the face of the Pistons, and Scottie Barnes was at one point the Rookie of the Year front runner.
