But with a pre-order price of $1,349 per box, is it a worthy investment or a collector’s pitfall? Let’s delve into the details.

An Introduction to 2023 Immaculate

Set to release on April 3, 2024, this year’s Immaculate collection is more than just cards; it’s a high-end experience. Each box contains 1 pack with 6 cards, featuring 5 autograph or memorabilia cards and 1 base or parallel.  

As we’ve noted with all NFL products this year, note that there are no CJ Stroud, Bryce Young or Will Levis autographs in this product. For an autograph-driven product, that immediately is a big chink in the armor.

But that doesn’t mean it’s worthless. The allure of Immaculate lies in its exclusive content, boasting RPA stunners, autographs from current stars and legends, and some of the most breathtaking memorabilia cards of the season.

Unpacking 2023 Immaculate Football set 

Immaculate is synonymous with luxury within the sports card market. While it doesn’t quite have the gravitational pull as National Treasures, it’s a more affordable rip (as far as high-end rips go).

The 2023 edition continues this tradition, offering collectors hard-signed Rookie Patch Autographs and Premium Patch Autographs. Signature inserts like Signature Moves and Immaculate Moments are back, alongside high-level memorabilia cards such as Rookie Logos and Immaculate Dual NFL Shields.

New this year are the Base Cleats and Base Action variations, adding a fresh twist to the beloved base set.

Should you invest in Immaculate Football?

Given the hefty price tag, the decision to invest in Immaculate Football isn’t straightforward. Here’s a closer look at the investment potential.

Investing in a sealed box of Immaculate Football

Immaculate’s scarcity and high-quality content generally hold its value well, making it a potentially lucrative investment. The key lies in the strength of the rookie class and the rarity of the cards found within each box.

And, when baking in the value of the rookie class, you can almost throw out CJ Stroud since his autographs aren’t found within. 

Here’s the value of the last few years based on recent sales (as of 3/27/2024)

• 2023: $1350
• 2022: $840
• 2021: $1,010
• 2020: $3,200
• 2019: $800

Wow, the 2020 box is worth a lot of money. That’s what you get when the rookie class includes Burrow, Hebert, Hurts, Tua, Love, Jefferson and more. But the rest of the boxes? They’re worth quite a bit less right now than the 2023 box is pre-ordering for… that’s a clear stay.

So, for that reason alone, I’d warn against investing in this one as a long-term hold. Of course, the sports card market could rise as a whole again, but from the numbers above I don’t think we’re seeing enough from the 2023 class to think they’ll be better than the 2020 class, and that’s what it would take to make this a good investment.

I’d suspect these boxes get down to three-digit prices shortly after release.

Investing in singles

For those more inclined towards individual cards, the high-end autographs and memorabilia cards found in Immaculate are where the real value lies. The prestige of owning a piece of football history, combined with the rarity and quality of these cards, makes them highly desirable for collectors and investors alike.

As with any high-end product, selecting the right cards to invest in requires knowledge and a bit of luck.

Find your favorite rookie that’s not Stroud, Young or Levis and pick up an RPA if you are serious about investing in Immaculate.

Bottom line: Should you rip, hold or pass?
