Items of Note

While baseball still has the most items in this auction, the other sports shine through in a way that isn’t true of all the auctions this month. There’s plenty of ultra-modern to be had here as well, also something you don’t see in all auctions. Sure, you’ll find a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle, but you’ll also find a lot more.

Michael Jordan fans will find a 1986-87 Fleer in PSA 10 and a 1984 Star in PSA 8, both of which will go for well north of $150,000. That’s just the tip of the iceberg for Jordan items. There’s even a sealed wax box of 1986-87 Fleer basketball, in case you want to try to pull your own PSA 10.

There’s a 2024 Topps Chrome Rookie Autographs SuperFractor 1/1 of Elly De La Cruz in PSA 9/10 and a Jackson Holliday in PSA 10/10.

There’s a 2011 Bowman Chrome Prospect Autographs /5 Bryce Harper in PSA 9, a 2018 Bowman Rookie Autographs Chrome Orange Refractor Shohei Ohtani in PSA 9, and a 2014 Bowman Chrome Autograph Prospects Red Refractor of Mookie Betts in PSA 10. A who’s who of low-pop autos of the biggest names in the hobby.

Football fans will find a 2017 Panini National Treasures Rookie Patch Autograph of Patrick Mahomes II in BKT 9/10 and a Travis Kelce Superbowl Game-Used, Photo-Matched Kansas City Chiefs Jersey.

Soccer fans will enjoy the 2023-24 Topps Chrome UEFA Club Competitions Dual 1/1 Autograph Superfractor of Cristiano Ronaldo/Lionel Messi in PSA 9. There’s plenty more, including jerseys, both signed and game-used.

Leading things off for Memory Lane this month is a Babe Ruth 1928-29 Game-Used Hillerich & Bradsby Louisville Slugger bat. There’s also a 1921 Exhibits Babe Ruth in a PSA 6, and a 1925 Exhibits Lou Gehrig in PSA 3.5.

There are some of the classic vintage cards of the hobby, including a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle in a PSA 3.5 slab. The 1951 Bowman Willie Mays has a PSA 10 autograph on a PSA 4 card, a nice combo.

There’s a 1980 Topps Scoring Leaders card featuring Bird, Erving, and Johnson in a PSA 9 / Auto 10. That’s three big autos. There’s a 1984 Star Michael Jordan PSA 6, and a 1965 Topps Joe Namath in PSA 7.5.

There are many lots representing some of the great card sets from the hobbies past, including T206, 1952 Topps,  and 1888 Old Judge, Goodwin, and Allen & Ginter.

September 2024 Sportscard Auctions

Sirius Sportcards Auction #373

Sirius Sportscards has its Auction #373 running through September 12th. The focus of the auction is post-war, with baseball being the most well-represented sport, although you’ll also find basketball, football, hockey, and non-sport lots.

As is often the case with Sirius, the lots trend towards collector-grade and affordable as opposed to museum pieces, although there are plenty of lots that should sell for high hammer prices.

Auction Basics

Auction Dates:Ends September 12, 2024
Bid Open:Opens September 2, 2024
Number of Lots:891

Items of Note

As mentioned, the focus here is on post-war, but there is a handful of cards outside that window, including a 1939 Play Ball Ted Williams in PSA 1. Back to post war, there are a large number of graded 1952 Bowman cards, including a Mickey Mantle in PSA 5 and a Stan Musial in PSA 6.

There are a horde of graded cards from the 1950’s and 1960’s, including a mix of commons, minor stars, and superstars, such as the 1955 Ted Williams in PSA 5.5. There’s a sharp PSA 7 copy of the 1959 Topps Destruction Crew card, which we’ve previously highlighted here on Cardlines.

The 1970’s, 1980’s and beyond are also well represented, with cards like the 1978 Topps Eddie Murray rookie card ranging in grades from PSA 5 up to PSA 9. There are a number of 2018 Leaf Shohei Ohtani cards, including several in PSA 10 slabs.

Football lots range from graded 1950’s Bowman to 2022 Panini Russell Wilson cards in PSA 10 slabs. Basketball lots start in the 1970’s, including 1970 Topps cards of Lew Alcindor in a PSA 6 and Pete Maravich in a PSA 7.

Non-sports lots run the gambit from ultra-modern cards of recent presidential candidates and presidents, including 1/1 printing plates of Kamala Harris to tobacco cards including 1888 Allen & Ginter and 1889 Dukes Cigarettes.

Robert Edward Auctions September Encore Auction

Robert Edward Auctions (REA) has its September Encore Auction running from September 12th to September 22nd. The auction has a huge number of lots, with close to 3,600 lots in total. Baseball is king
here, but there’s a lot to see across the boards in an auction this large.

Items of note

This monster of an auction has a lot to like. 1952 Topps fan? There’s a Jackie Robinson in a SGC 8, a Willie Mays in PSA 7, a wrapper, and much more. 1909-1911 T206? There’s a large number of lots, including Ty Cobb White Border in PSA 4. There’s a 1910 Williams Caramel Cobb also in PSA 4 that’s a great looking example, as well.

There are so, so many amazing vintage cards in amazing conditions. A small taste would include a 1968 Topps Johnny Bench rookie in PSA 8, a 1984 Fleer Update Roger Clemens RC in PSA 10,  a 1959 Topps Bob Gibson RC in PSA 8.5, and a 1955 Topps Willie Mays in PSA 8, just to scratch the surface. Not everything is a museum piece, though, with many great cards in more affordable collector grades.

While the ultra-modern isn’t nearly as plentiful here, there’s still some great lots. These include a 2023 Panini Prizm Football C.J. Stroud Snakeskin in PSA 10 and a 2018 Topps High Tek Autograph Shohei Ohtani Rookie Black & White in BGS 10/10.

Any time you have an auction with over 3,500 lots, any auction preview will be woefully incomplete. We highly recommend you go page through the REA auction this month to see more of the lots.

Sirius Sportcards Auction #374

Sirius Sportscards returns again later in the month with its Auction #374, running from September 16th to September 26th.  As is the norm, Sirius brings some high end items, but plenty of collector grade items that aren’t out of reach for all but the biggest hobby whales. Baseball is king, although most sports are represented, along with non-sport.

Auction Basics

Auction:Sirius Sportcards Auction #374

Auction Dates:Ends September 26, 2024
Bid Open:1,119
Number of Lots:TBD

Items of Note

The auction leads off with some hobby classic vintage cards in collector grade slabs. There’s a 1950 Bowman Jackie Robinson in a PSA 3.5 slab, a 1955 Topps Sandy Koufax in PSA 4, and a 1958 Topps Football Jim Brown, also in PSA 4.

Like autographed junk wax gems? There’s a 1991 Upper Deck Final Edition Pedro Martinez in PSA 10/10, a 1990 Score Traded Frank Thomas in PSA 10/10, and a 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. in PSA 9/10. We can argue about whether 1980 Topps is the junk wax era or not, but we can probably agree that 1980 Topps Rickey Henderson in PSA 7/ Auto 10 is a cool card.

Other signed rookie cards include those of Reggie Jackson, John Stockton, Rod Carew, Cal Ripken, and Johnny Bench.  The list of attainable graded cards from the post-war era is particularly impressive, with the 1950’s, 1960’s, and 1970’s all well-represented.

There’s plenty of memorabilia to like, including both sports items like a ticket stub from the game where Hank Aaron passed Babe Ruth on the career home run list and non-sports items including a number of signed Time magazine covers.

Love of the Game Summer 2024 Premier Auction

Love of the Game brings us their Summer 2024 Premiere Auction, which wraps up on September 28, 2024.  Baseball rules here, although there are lots from all the major sports, plus pop culture and Americana.

Auction Basics

Auction Dates:Ends September 28, 2024
Bid Open:Open
Number of Lots:2,123
Bidding Guide:Rules

Items of Note

There are over 2,100 lots in the Love the Game auction this month, but the first four lots feature such big names I want to shout them out first. Things lead off with a 1916 M101-5 Sporting News #176 Jim Thorpe in PSA 8. There’s a 1920 Babe Ruth Original Type 1 photo that has been authenticated by PSA.

Up next are two PSA Auto 9 copies of two of the most iconic cards in the hobby, the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle and  the 1956 Topps Jackie Robinson. All four items are simply gorgeous examples.

The vintage gems don’t slow down after that. There’s an extremely rare Cuban-issued 1923-24 Billiken John Henry “Pop” Lloyd, the Negro League star. A 1952 Tip-Top Bread Mickey Mantle in PSA 1. The N162 Goodwin Champions Cap Anson is in an impressive PSA 6, impressive for a card produced in 1888. There’s a 1952 Topps Eddie Mathews rookie card in PSA 7 that’s a great example of the classic card. The #27 1957-58 Topps Basketball set on the PSA registry is here.

The legends are all here, across a number of lots. Babe Ruth. Jackie Robinson. Mickey Mantle. Willie Mays. Roberto Clemente. The list goes on and on.

One lot that caught my eye was a 1983 Fleer Baseball set, in which every card expect the checklist is signed the player or players pictured on the card. What a collecting achievement putting that together!

Goldin Auctions September Elite Auction

Items of Note

This month’s Goldin auction has a nicer mix of sport, and more modern, than most of the other auctions this month.

Michael Jordan is well-represented, including a number of 1984-85 Star included a BGS 8.5  copy and an autographed version. The 1986-87 Fleer is also here, including an impressive PSA 10 example. The 1997-98 SkyBox Metal Universe Championship Precious Metal Gems is “only” a PSA 5.5, but bidding quickly passed $100,000.

The 2004-05 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection Signatures Logoman LeBron James 1/1 in PSA 10 is sure to see active bidding. The 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket Autograph Tom Brady is in a BGS 8 / Auto 10 slab.

Many of the most iconic cards in the hobby are represented here, including the 1979 O-Pee-Chee Wanye Gretzky in a PSA 9, a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle in SGC 5, the 1963 Topps Pete Rose in PSA 9, and many more.

There are so many other great lots in the auction, including a 2023 Bowman Chrome Draft Prospect Autographs SuperFractor Paul Skenes (#1/1) in PSA 7, PSA/DNA 10 and a 2022-23 Topps Dynasty UEFA Champions League Autographed Patch Gold Lionel Messi 1/1 Auto Patch card.

The Collector Connection Post War Sports Card Memorabilia Football Kickoff

The Collector Connection returns later in the month with another auction, the Post War Sports Card Memorabilia Football Kickoff. Football is the headliner here, although there’s still plenty of baseball here and a spattering of other sports and ephemera.

Auction Basics

Auction:The Collector Connection Post War Sports Card Memorabilia Football Kickoff
Website URL:https://thecollectorconnection.com/Lots/Gallery
Auction Dates:Ends on September 29, 2024
Bid Open:1,184
Number of Lots:TBD
Bidding Guide:Terms

Items of Note

The auction kicks off with some great vintage complete Topps football sets. A taste of what you’ll find includes complete Topps sets from 1958, 1966, and 1967, plus a 1963 Fleer complete set.

Graded vintage football rookie cards? There’s a 1957 Topps Football Johnny Unitas in SVG 3, a 1958 Topps Jim Brown in PSA 5, a 1962 Topps Football Mike Ditka in PSA 5, a 1972 Topps Football Roger Staubach in PSA 8, a 1976 Topps Football Walter Payton in PSA 8, and a 1978 Topps Football Tony Dorsett in PSA 9.

There’s plenty of baseball complete sets as well. 1950 Bowman, 1956 Topps, 1968 Topps, and 1969 Topps.  There’s even a 1951 Topps Ringside complete set for vintage boing fans.

One of the coolest items in my opinion is the 1939 The Football News Vol 1 Issue 8 from November 4, 1939, which features a cover article on UCLA halfback Jackie Robinson.

Beyond the above, there’s plenty of great vintage cards, both graded and raw. There’s also many autographed lots, publications, bobble heads and figurines, artwork and posters, and more.
