An In-depth Guide To 2022 Panini Limited Football

panini limited 2022 football

The idea behind the Limited franchise is simple. Provide a good amount of hits at a lower price. And as any other Panini products have risen wildly in price, Limited has kept it reasonable, at least in relation to the competition.

But does that balancing act work? Is Panini providing us with genuine value in this product? Or are the hits falling flat? Read our 2022 Panini Limited Football Review to find out.

History of Panini Limited Football

The first product in this series was the 1995 Images Limited Football series. In 2000, it was released as Leaf Limited Football for the first time. It was known for having a smaller print than average. The cards were also printed on high-quality foil stock. People loved it for that.

But that isn’t what made the early Leaf and Donruss Limited releases unique. They were some of the earliest cards to have swatches and patches in them. And as the years went by, Leaf introduced more jersey and memorabilia cards into the mix.

As the value of each card went up, the number of cards in each box went down. That way, the price could remain stable and reasonable. They also loaded up on autos before most other products did.

In recent years the Limited franchise has built on the emphasis on memorabilia cards. It has also continued to emphasize quality over quantity. You can now expect to find one Rookie Patch Auto (RPA) card in each hobby box.

2022 Panini Limited Football release date

The hobby boxes for this product are expected to drop on April 5, 2023. And this is a hobby box-only release, so don’t expect any retail later. But the FOTL box dropped on March 27 through a Panini online Dutch auction.

So the release date is not ideal. On the other hand, not too many people are dying to buy 2022 NFL cards two months after the Super Bowl. But better late than never, I guess?

2022 Panini Limited Football release formats

As we said, only hobby boxes and FOTL releases are planned for the 2022 Panini Limited Football release. However, here is what to expect in each.

2022 Panini Limited Football pros

The most significant advantages of this release can be summed up in one clean and beautiful sentence. An RPA per box for $350. Not many products have that going for them. Now, granted, some of the old-timers in the hobby remember when Panini Limited Football boxes cost considerably less.

One user from Blowout Forums opined: “I remember when a box of Limited could be had for $89 bucks.” Oh, to return to those magical days.

But this is not a bad price for guaranteed hits of that caliber in the current climate. I mean, sure that RPA is on average rather than guaranteed. But from the breaks I have seen, you can rely on it being there.

There have been complaints from fans in recent years about the Panini Limited Football designs. But looking at the various message boards this time, hobby enthusiasts are pretty happy with what they see. And I totally agree with them.

The 2022 Panini Limited Football base cards look classic and elegant while retaining freshness. The aesthetic captures the high-end (on a budget) pretensions of the Limited brand.

2022 Panini Limited Football cons

Is it too much to expect an on-card RPA from a relatively reasonably priced box? Yeah, probably. But there is something pretty dissatisfying about having a big-name RPA with a sticker auto. And some higher-end collectors snub these boxes for that reason.

On the other hand, in the past, Panini Limited Football featured some gorgeous on-card signatures. So, I do understand why some collectors are unhappy.

Another problem is the auto list, which generally seems weaker than usual. More defensive players and no-name veterans than usual. And that leads to general dissatisfaction with the autos. The list is weak. It’s all on-card, and the price of the boxes is far higher than it was in the past.

2022 Panini Limited Football checklist

2022 Panini Limited Football has a limited checklist featuring only 100 base cards. But few people buy Limited to complete the base checklist. What people are really interested in is the RPAs and other autos.

There are 42 cards in the RPA list. The list does include some of the biggest names, including Kenny Pickett, Desmond Ridder, and Malik Willis. Most cards in this product have Spotlight Parallels.

Inserts

Panini Limited Football is better known for its autographs than inserts. But one notable insert is available in 2022 Panini Limited Football this year. And it is a particularly good-looking one.

2004 Limited Tribute

The 2004 Leaf Limited release was a particularly attractive one. The cards came with a beautiful checkered black and white background. It was one of the classiest and most memorable designs this product ever produced.

So, the 2022 Panini Limited Football release is recycling them. The insert includes 40 veterans and 60 rookies. Meanwhile, the Limited Edition parallel is a case hit for the product.

2022 Panini Limited Football autographs

The real bread and butter for any Panini Limited Football release are the autos. And these years have a wide variety. Unfortunately, as we discussed, most of them appear to be sticker autos. However, the Ring of Honor cards are on-card and look pretty sharp as a result.

Rookie Patch Autographs

The regular RPAs are subtle, with small uniform swatches and a nice background design. Aside from the sticker auto problem, they are flat-out beautiful. The lettering is particularly dashing with a metallic and understated feel. Two thumbs up.

Rookie Patch Autographs Jumbo

The jumbo RPA line looks markedly different from the regular release. While the basic RPA is subtle, this one has the swatch covering a more significant percentage of the front.

However, it isn’t as garish as many of the bigger RPAs out there. It is still a classy card. There are 41 of the Rookie Patch Autographs Jumbo cards.

SPOTLIGHT PARALLELS:

  • Silver #/75
  • Gold #/49
  • Ruby #/35
  • Holographic #/29

Limited Membership

The RPAs are the autos you want. But there are quite a few awesome ones in 2022 Panini Limited Football. Limited Membership is a mainstay in this release, and for a good reason.

These are /99 cards that look like I.D’s with autos from some of the biggest NFL stars. You have 19 of them, and the design is excellent. As an added bonus, you have the weight and height on the front, which is essential information the next time you do a traffic stop for Odell Beckham Jr.

SPOTLIGHT PARALLELS:

  • Gold #/49 or less
  • Ruby #/25 or less
  • Emerald #/10 or less

2022 Panini Limited Football value

The Panini Limited Football release’s selling point is the reasonable price of big hits. Cool. But what is the point of scoring hits if they aren’t valuable? And what about the wax? Is that worth stashing, or is this more of a rip format? Let’s crunch the numbers and find out.

Wax

In the past, the Limited Football boxes were quite reasonably priced. But now they are up to $350 each. That means the bar you need to clear for profitability is much higher. So, do the boxes from recent years stack up when you consider increased prices? Here is the resale value of Panini Limited Football wax from recent years.

Shop for 2022 Panini Limited Football boxes on eBay

2017 Panini Limited Football Hobby BoxWilling to buy it for $800
2018 Panini Limited Football Hobby Box$650
2019 Panini Limited Football Hobby Box$400
2020 Panini Limited Football Hobby Box$800
2021 Panini Limited Football Hobby Box$375

If you go back to 2017, you can’t even get your hands on a box. I couldn’t find a single on available. But the good folks at Dave & Adams are offering $800 to anyone with one. That means its probably worth well over $1,000. And every year is worth more than the $350 boxes are going for now. So, it seems like a pretty good box to stash. And when you think about it, there is logic to that. Limited Football isn’t really a box people buy to keep unopened. It’s the kind you rip to see what RPA is in there. But because of the hits, it has good resale value. So the combination of scarcity and hits yields reasonable prices. So, you might want to stash some of these away, especially if you believe in the 2022 NFL rookie class.

Singles

The real test in terms of single cards is how well the Panini Limited Football RPAs sell for on the open market. You get one per box. Of course, when you hit that big rookie, you are overjoyed, and rightly so. But are they worth enough to rip open the box? Especially after we have seen that they accrue pretty good value in your cupboard?

Here are some examples of recent RPA sales:

CardValue
2017 Panini Limited Patrick Mahomes Rookie Patch Auto /75 (BGS 8.5)$3,550
2020 Panini Limited Josh Allen Rookie Patch Auto /5 (PSA Authenticated)$2,650
2020 Tua Tagovailoa Rookie Patch Auto /99 (PSA 10)$1,500
2020 Panini Limited Joe Burrow Holographic Spotlight Rookie Patch Auto /23 (PSA 9)$787
2021 Panini Limited Trevor Lawrence Rookie Patch Auto /99 (PSA 9)$685

There are no life-changing cards in Panini Limited Football. But you already knew that. And generally speaking, only the big-name rookie quarterbacks cover your expenses on the box. And I feel that will be doubly true as they switch to sticker autos.

If you look at some of the cards in the list above, they are raving about card beauties. But, unfortunately, the 2022 Panini Limited Football RPAs just don’t look as appealing.

Final word on 2022 Panini Limited Football

The Panini Limited Football line has stood the test of time for a reason. It offers beautiful-looking RPAs in boxes ordinary people can afford. There is a whole range of good-looking autos in it aside from that.

That is a good thing, and we are glad Limited is around. However, the move to on-sticker autos increases the gap between Limited and brands like Immaculate and National Treasures, which have on-card autos. Not everyone cares about that, but the market value of the cards will likely suffer as a result.

One surprising finding we had when crunching the numbers was that the Panini Limited Football boxes have a surprising amount of wax value. It doesn’t look like too many people are holding these unopened, which gives wise investors an opportunity.

But ripping seems unwise. Most RPAs will not cover your expenses, and because they are sticker autos, the margins will be worse than usual. Therefore, this is a classic hold box. The higher prices of the hobby boxes this year make strengthened that long-term trend.
