2023-24 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer Review

panini prizm 2023-24 english premier league

When new Panini products are released, we often wonder if this is the last time we will see it come out. That is because the card giant from Texas is losing the rights to the three biggest American sports.

But with Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer, that is not an issue. At least not yet. Panini will continue to be the Premier League card producer for the near future after renewing its contract in 2021 for multiple years.

That is good news because it is easily the best and most beloved Premier League release. But has all the trouble at Panini influenced the quality of the release?

Or does it remain at the high standard collectors of this release have grown to expect? Read the 2023-24 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer review to find out more.

History of Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer

Cardboard soccer cards are a relatively new concept in the soccer world. Pro Set Trading Cards were the first to bring that format to the top English league (still the Football League First Division).

Upper Deck released several Premier League in the early 2000s, though none really took off. Topps had the rights to the Premier League from 2011 to 2019 and produced several products, including Topps Premier League Chrome and Topps Premier League Gold, and a Platinum model as well.

The company also produced the Topps soccer game Topps Match Attax for the Premier League for many years and various types of stickers. Despite all these attempts, Premier League cards never really had an essential spot in the annual Topps release calendar.

When Panini won the rights to the league in 2019, it was a no-brainer to release a Prizm Premier League release. Indeed, that was the first Panini release for the league. Hobby boxes debuted for $120, and each had a guaranteed autograph.

The initial reaction of fans was absolute delight. It was quickly the most beloved and anticipated Premier League card release yet. It was clear that Panini put a lot of effort into the release, as opposed to Topps, which often seemed to treat their soccer releases as an afterthought.

In 2020-21, Panini added a Silver Prizm to every hobby box and increased the number of numbered Prizms in every box. Later, that number was increased to no less than four Silver Prizms.

That improved the product and sent its resale value up considerably. Though Panini has tried to introduce other Premier League products to their lineup, Prizm has remained head and shoulders above the rest as THE flagship for the league and arguably for the sport.

2023-24 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer release date

The 2023-24 iteration of Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer dropped on February 14, 2024. How does that fit into the league timeline? We were already well past the season’s halfway point when the product saw the light of day.

Last season started way back on August 11, 2023. Meanwhile, the final games will be played on May 19, 2024. So, it’s not the best time to release a flagship product, but it’s still relevant. Could be worse.

As we know, Panini has had some serious trouble with keeping releases on track since the supply chain crisis. But they have been improving on most fronts this year. How does 2023-24 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer do in that regard?

Well, let’s compare the release date to previous years. Last year, the product was a bit later than it is now. The 2022-23 Prizm Premier League came out on March 24, 2023. About a month later into the campaign.

That is a blessed improvement. It is also an earlier date than the 2021-22 release (March 7). The only time it came out earlier was the enviable release date for the inaugural 2019-20 Prizm Premier League Soccer release, September 20, 2019.

Will it ever return to that? We can dream.

2023-24 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer release formats

Panini has always envisioned Prizm as a primarily retail release. And it has done a pretty good job of making Premier League Prizm products available in the retail outlets.

2023-24 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer pros

There are several notable advantages to this product over its rivals. Prizm remains the top sports card product in the nation. It has a cache and a beloved aesthetic that makes it stand out.

It also has established itself as the only product with any significance for the English Premier League, which is far and away the most popular and lucrative soccer league in the world.

The Prizm design is beloved. And maybe I am not objective (ok, I am definitely not), but it seems to pop for soccer cards particularly.

Two product configurations of Premier League Prizm are particularly valuable. The Mega Box has numerous exclusive parallels and Prizms, often making opening one worthwhile.

Meanwhile, the FOTL has always been particularly loaded. It is not unusual for one of those boxes to include several 1/1s and a bunch of other rare and limited cards. Indeed, it is rare for a release to have formats that so consistently deliver. We have to give Panini credit for that.

Better Prices

The other pro is unexpected. The price for this release is far better than it used to be. During the COVID-19 bubble period, it looked like soccer cards would be the next big thing. That never happened.

While the sport has a robust following in America, it remains far behind the traditionally big American sports. The upshot is that the 2023-24 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer boxes cost far less than their recent predecessors did when released.

For example, you can now get the FOTL for less than a regular hobby box went for a couple of years ago. This is great news for soccer collectors. Of course, the reduction in the price is also a simple question of gravity. The value of Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer boxes and singles just wasn’t high enough to sustain those crazy prices.

2023-24 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer cons

The resale value of wax, particularly singles for Panini Prizm Premier League, has always been an issue. That is probably the main reason the price has gone down. After all, the collectors can easily check what previous years are selling for. They were paying too much for several years, and now it has appropriately adjusted.

The biggest problem with this release has been the lack of worthwhile rookies. Don’t get me wrong. The Premier League has produced some immense talent over the last few years. It always has and likely always will. However, the market does not seem to value their cards that much.

One Blowout Forum user explained it this way, “There are no “big rookies” in soccer….it’s not really like US sports…..young players have a variety of cards in various products, and often get stickers before their first card. Lewis Miley is probably the biggest name this year simply because he played and held his own in the Champions League at age 17.

But even a Newcastle fan like me had never even heard of him before this season…and the fact that he’s been solid this year doesn’t mean that he’s ever going to get any better or become a superstar. This has become more of a release for set completists and enthusiasts and less for investors. That is one of the reasons the price has gone down.

The auto list for this product has always been uneven. It is not the first priority for Panini, and their recent legal and financial issues have not helped things either. Therefore, you will usually find that the checklist lacks autos for entire teams, and many of the more prominent names are missing.

The rookie class of 2023-24 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer

As we have mentioned before, the rookies in Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer don’t seem to perform all that well on the open market. Part of that is the nature of the soccer hobby. Also, there is so much promising young talent in the league, but there is no Wayne Rooney or Steven Gerrard type to get the juices flowing.

Does that change in 2023-24? There are a few rookies who jump out at me. Simon Adingr, the winger from Brighton & Hove Albion, made an excellent name for himself at the Africa Cup of Nations competition. He was among the stars there, helping the Ivory Coast to the title. So, he probably is the biggest among the rookies right now.

By all accounts, Lewis Miley will be an excellent central midfielder. The real question with him is if he can develop the attacking flair that makes one a good hobby investment. Kobbie Mainoo is another central midfielder in a similar position (if you pardon the pun). However, he has already broken into Manchester United for the first time, so he has more proven ability.

Shop for boxes of 2023-24 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer on eBay

The bottom line? This is not an excellent rookie crop. There are going to be some good Premier League players among these folks. But it’s hard to point at one as the clear superstar of the future.

2023-24 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer checklist

The Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer checklist always focuses on the base list and the Prizm variations of each one. Therefore, it has a more extensive base card list than most releases, tapping out at 300. However, that is a bit too big for comfort.

It allows for the full starting eleven and a couple of players who are part of the playing rotation for each team. But the downside is that it serves to water down the incredible list of parallels.

You are far more likely to get a Prizm for an undesirable player with a checklist of 300 than one of 200.

Autos

Autos may not be the main selling point in Prizm, but they certainly don’t hurt. Of course, we are not big fans of the on-sticker autos in this release. But they are even more infuriating when you are paying $1,000 a box, like with the basketball release. Here, it is more tolerable.

The selection is small because that is not what this release is about. In addition, the auto lists for this product are notoriously bad. But no one complains when they hit one.

Penmanship

This year, these have a particularly ugly design that has a distasteful take on the base card design. The white strip going smack through the middle of the card is unattractive and serves to emphasize the sticker. But maybe that is just me.

These cards can be worth a few hundred dollars. But only if you get an Erling Halaand. No legit. All the top sales are his, to an alarming degree.

Signatures and Dual Signatures

The Signatures series tends to have a more attractive layout than Penmanship, and the 2023-24 release is no exception. The more subtle design stresses the sticker less for a more pleasing result. It also enjoys greater prestige and value as a result.

Many autos from previous years are worth quite a bit. Kevin De Bruyne, Thierry Henry, and (of course) Halland have had cards go for over $1,000. That is very good value in Prizm Premier League terms. These cards also come in the self-explanatory Dual Signatures format.

These are often less attractive and fetched lower values than their singular counterparts. However, I like the design for 2023-24 and wouldn’t be surprised if they do a bit better than usual due to their eye-catching properties.

Inserts

It is pretty much agreed that Panini doesn’t put its best inserts in Prizm, believing (usually correctly) that the parallels will do the trick. But because the inserts include one of the best case hits the company has to offer, in the form of Color Blast, you can’t afford to write them off. And I have to admit, there are a few others that I really like. Here is an overview.

Shop for boxes of 2023-24 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer on eBay

Brilliance

What is the concept behind the Brilliance insert? I am guessing they are putting brilliant players with brilliant colors in the background — or at least something like that. The cards in this series have a sort of subtle halo around the head of the relevant player.

Brilliance is familiar to Prizm collectors from other sports and is a pretty good-looking item. The insert has strong enough value to go for hundreds of dollars for the right 1/1.

Color Blast

For most collectors, Color Blast needs no introduction. They rank among the finest-looking and best-conceived inserts Panini has ever produced. Wonderful action shots are complemented by what appears to be an explosion of color in impressionistic (or something, I took art history ages ago) style.

Many of these go for over $2,000. That is a fortune by the standards of Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer. These are easily the best-looking and most desirable cards this product offers. It makes buying a case of Premier League Prizm a tempting prospect.

Emergent

The Emergent insert is that classic rookie-based insert. It combines a clear first-time card theme with the official Panini RC designation. I like these cards, but my main caveat is that they look too much like Prizm base cards.

A bit of differentiation would be nice. The low-numbered versions do better than you would expect. It’s one of the gems among the Prizm inserts.

Fireworks

There is a long and proud tradition of inserts that are exactly what they sound like. Fireworks is firmly in that vein. It features, well….fireworks. And, of course, the players they choose for this purpose are those that produce fireworks on the field.

A no-brainer and, overall, a combination that works. Sadly, even the scarce versions of the insert do not have much value on the open market. A shame because the football and basketball equivalents do quite nicely.

Groovy

I love the 1970s and its uniquely trashy aesthetic. Nonetheless, the Groovy insert reduces it to a mockery. The distinctly non-groovy-looking modern athletes on the background of trippy, cliched 1970s décor concepts don’t look right to me. But who asked me? Literally no one.

The insert is doing quite well. In particular, David Beckham from the new set is making waves on eBay. One recently sold for $600. That is at least partially because Groovy is a case hit.

Manga

Now, this is more like it. Clearly inspired by the success of the Marvel inserts, Manga brings the aesthetic of Japanese animation to your friendly neighborhood case hit. The insert turns your favorite players into Manga characters. Honestly, Panini succeeds in this beyond my wildest expectations.

These cards are just raving beauties. They go for what you expect from a Premier League Prizm case hit. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if the values shoot up in the long term.

Prizm Flashback 2012

It’s one thing when Topps does its throwback designs for their vintage designs. They have a back catalog going back to the 1950s. But it’s entirely different when Panini reprises Prizm when it is a relatively recent release.

Adding to the problem (let’s be honest here), this release looks the same every year. But I am sure the low-numbered parallels will do well.

Talismen

A talisman is an “object, typically an inscribed ring or stone, that is thought to have magic powers and to bring good luck.” Thank you, Oxford Dictionary. These inserts show some of the most prominent players in the league playing in the middle of a ring of power and doing their thing.

It is not a high concept, but these are beautiful cards, nonetheless. However, the values are far lower than your average Prizm insert.

2023-24 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer value

It’s nice to finally write a review of a product for which the price has declined. Usually, I look at boxes that have gone up by hundreds of dollars for no apparent reason. But this is a different story.

Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer was never a bad investment. Sure, there are boxes with more upside. The soccer card market is not huge, after all. But with a highly committed and passionate fanbase and no competition for the EPL, these boxes have an excellent market.

Shop for boxes of 2023-24 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer on eBay

Wax

Boxes in 2022-23 went for $300 and are now going for $75. There, we would expect to see that they are now a better deal. But let’s crunch the numbers to be sure.

ReleaseValue
2019-20 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer Hobby Box$1,099.95
2020-21 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer Hobby Box$200
2021-22 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer Hobby Box$160
2022-23 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer Hobby Box$245

The first thing that catches the eye here is the high value of the 2019-20 hobby box. Indeed, the value of this thing has doubled since I wrote the review of 2022-23 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer. The other boxes, though, have remained about the same or seen a modest reduction in price.

That would possibly explain the drop in price. However, we have seen some Panini products remain at high price points (or even increase their price) despite having similar value issues.

Despite some decreases in value, a box of Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer is not a bad investment. Some of the rookies in these boxes will be stars, though it is currently difficult to guess who.

This product is not as overprinted as other Prizm products, and there is a strong core of fans. I believe these boxes will appreciate considerably over the next few years.

Singles

I was pleasantly surprised When I looked at recent sales for the inserts and autos in this product. There seems to be a robust market for the more scarce cards here. In addition, it looks like some rookies from recent years are finally getting the recognition they deserve.

But let’s look at this more systematically. Here are a few of the most notable recent eBay sales of Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer cards.

CardValue
2022-23 Prizm English Premier League Breakaway Erling Haaland Gold Disco Prizm /10 (PSA 10)$999
2022-23 Panini Select Wilfried Gnonto Rookie Card Gold Prizm AUTO /10 (PSA 10)$6,766
2022 Panini Prizm Premier League Alejandro Garnacho Green Choice Rookie Card /5 (PSA 10)$3,550
2021-22 Prizm Premier League Cristiano Ronaldo Gold Mojo /10 #283 (PSA 8)$3,273
2023-24 Panini Prizm Soccer Premier English Premier League Rasmus Hojlund Color Blast (Raw)$2,600

These are some of the highest-selling cards. But when you review the sales list, the depth of solid cards stands out. For a $225 box, there are many cards with several times the value of the hobby box.

That is increasingly difficult to find right now. Indeed, that is what to remember about Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer singles. While there are no life-changing cards in this product, there are a lot of solid cards. Numbered Prizms of the more prominent stars tend to sell well. So do many of the inserts and autos. People love Prizm, and this product is a strong one.

There is no question that singles are a far better investment than boxes of EPL Prizm. At least right now. But as I said above, I think the value of the singles and relatively low printing runs will also raise the value of boxes.

Final thoughts on 2023-24 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer

Though not the most visible Prizm release, Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer has carved a niche as one of the best soccer products available. Sure, every Prizm design is the same. But they work, damn it!

Furthermore, they seem to fit soccer better than any design. Please don’t ask me why. They do. Collectors agree with me, and these cards have consistently strong value. Even more than more supposedly prestigious brands.

As Panini lurches from crisis to crisis, 2023-24 Panini Prizm Premier League Soccer is the product that makes us happy. This outfit is still in business.
