One of the most exciting times of the year for baseball fans is January. The Baseball Hall of Fame is about to announce its 2024 inductees and Spring Training is just a few dozen sleeps away.
Baseball card fans also look forward to this time of year as well. Topps typically drops its iconic flagship release in February and as that date gets closer, collectors gear up for the official unveiling of the latest design.
As of January 11th, collectors have to wait no longer as Topps released a hype video of its latest “electric” release.
In an additional tweet on Thursday afternoon, other mockups were released of Mike Trout and Alex Bregman
In the video, Cincinnati Reds star Elly De La Cruz gets the honor of showcasing the 2024 Topps design.
The card includes an oversized border separated by color-matched lined neon lights. The team name is in the right upper-hand corner whereas the team logo is in the lower left-hand corner. An italicized name is in the lower right-hand corner but is thankfully not as obnoxious as the 2021 Topps design, which was surrounded by a color box and smaller.
In the Elly De La Cruz card, the border is a mix of white with a gradient into black for the top portion of the card. After cards of Trout and Bregman were unvieled, the assumption is that the border would be the same color on all cards minus the neon portion of the card.
Initial reaction to the design seems to be mostly positive with come of the biggest negatives coming from the border, with some not liking the black border and others saying the border is too large.
