A 2023 Panini One Football Review: The Ultimate Dice Roll

If you’re seeking a thrill in the sports card world, Panini One Football 2023 offers a gamble like no other—just one card per box.

This high-risk release is set to drop on August 16th, priced at $399.99. But is it worth the leap, or should you steer clear?

Introducing Panini One Football 2023

Investing is about balancing risk, whether in the stock market or sports cards. Experts will tell you not to put all your eggs in one basket, yet Panini One dares you to do just that. With only one card per box, it defines a high-risk, high-reward proposition.

Since its debut in 2018, Panini One has maintained its one-card-per-box format, featuring an on-card autograph every time. This year, the product continues to mix it up with autographs from NFL rookies, seasoned veterans, and iconic retired players.

If you’re determined to get some Panini One exposure, here’s what you need to know: the card set has been around since 2018 and has always had one on-card autograph per box.

There are many rookie patch autograph options, but many autograph set lists are veteran-driven… or even Hall-of-Famer-driven. And without CJ Stroud autographs included, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

What’s inside the box

Each box of 2023 Panini One holds a single, signed card, sometimes accompanied by memorabilia. The rookie class adds excitement, especially with the Rookie Patch Autographs that boast large jersey pieces.

The checklist is varied, featuring different autograph sets and even case-hit inserts like Color Blast, Manga, Surge, and Night Moves, which appear approximately once per case. And, from our understanding, boxes with these cards contain 2 cards.

That said, this is a bad product to rip. Want to see for yourself? Just go to eBay, type in “Panini One football autograph” then look at recent sales. I’d be willing to guess that 9 out of 10 sell for less than the $400 release price you’re paying for – again – one card.

Chasing the parallels

The parallels for each autograph set are typically broken down as follows:

  • Base Auto – #/99 or fewer
  • Blue – #/75 or fewer
  • Bronze – #/49 or fewer
  • Red – #/25 or fewer
  • Gold – #/10 or fewer
  • Platinum – #/5 or fewer
  • Gold Vinyl – 1/1

Some sets are even more limited, offering a higher reward for those who are lucky enough to pull them.

Is sealed 2023 Panini One worth it?

At $399.99 per box, Panini One 2023 presents a tough decision. The 2022 edition saw mixed results in the secondary market, struggling to maintain its value. While this year’s rookie class shows more promise, investing in sealed Panini One still comes with significant risk.

Here’s how this product has faired over the last few years.

  • 2023: $399 (preorder)
  • 2022: $300
  • 2021: $290
  • 2020: $900
  • 2019: $230

The obvious outlier is 2020, but that’s the deepest class on the market (Burrow, Herbert, Hurts, Love, Jefferson, etc). But, again, 2023 doesn’t have any chance of such upside without CJ Stroud, Bryce Young or Will Levis autos inside.

This box is more likely to be closer to the 2019 or 2022 rookie class if you throw out the big rookies that aren’t signing in this auto-only product.

Buying Panini One singles

Normally, I’d suggest picking up a few well-chosen low-numbered cards to hold onto, but Panini One doesn’t have the same collector appeal as other brands. It’s rare to find collectors actively seeking Panini One cards, making them harder to trade or sell.

Sure, landing a top rookie’s RPA would be a win, but in a market crowded with Optic, Select, Prizm, and other popular brands, Panini One often takes a back seat.

Final verdict of 2023 Panini One Football?

2023 Panini One is not for the faint of heart. Ripping a box is a big gamble—you could hit it big with a rare auto, but you’re far more likely end up with a card that doesn’t justify the $400 price tag.

It’s also not a great candidate for holding long-term. The product’s value is closely tied to the rookie class, and while 2023 is stronger than last year, it’s still a risky bet.

That leaves us with one clear option: pass. While the cards are attractive, Panini One just doesn’t stand out in a crowded market, and it’s not a wise investment.
