When new Panini products hit the market these days, they have a sense of uncertainty.
Some are coming out with their last-ever edition. The march of long goodbyes can be difficult to take. And this is one of those. Topps has taken over the rights to the English Premier League and starting with the 2025-26 season, they will be producing the cards for the most lucrative soccer league in the world.
It is a massive blow for Panini since they have based so much of their identity on the sport. It is where they came up from, starting with the Mexico 1970 World Cup, and they have released some of their best cards for English soccer.

The timing of this review feels different. We’re not just evaluating another release; we’re documenting the finale of what has become the definitive Premier League trading card product.
It is, without a doubt, my favorite release, which makes writing this a sad affair. Since winning the Premier League rights in 2019, Panini transformed the soccer card landscape with Prizm.
With hobby boxes at just $120, that first release seems quaint now. But it set the template: one guaranteed autograph per hobby box and the unmistakable Prizm aesthetic that collectors have come to love.
As we look at the 2024-25 edition – the final chapter in Panini’s Premier League Prizm story – it’s worth reflecting on how this product transformed soccer card collecting.
The journey of Premier League cards has been a long and winding one. Though cards have a long history in the sport of various tobacco products,
American-style standardized cards were missing from the sport there. It took an American company, Pro Set to introduce them, with mixed success in the early 1990s. Upper Deck and Topps also took their shots at the crown. However, they never managed to crack the code. Then Panini stepped in and used the same template that had worked so well for basketball and football.

Once again, they proved that Prizm worked. Since winning the Premier League rights in 2019, it has helped transform the soccer card landscape. That inaugural release set a high bar.
Hobby boxes debuted at $120, each with a guaranteed autograph, and the product was loaded with some of Panini’s most coveted inserts. The inclusion of Kaboom! Cards and Color Blasts – two of the most sought-after insert lines in the hobby – immediately helped establish the product’s premium position.
Collectors responded enthusiastically, making it the most beloved and anticipated Premier League card release yet.
The soccer season is almost over. At least we know who the champion will be if my beloved Liverpool FC doesn’t choke and make me look like an idiot for writing this.
The hobby boxes will be coming out on April 18th, with no retail date yet. Even though the season’s final games will take place on May 25th, we can probably expect the retail products around the end of the season; it was sad when we remembered that back in 2019-20, this baby was coming out in September, early in the season.
When all the enthusiasm is gone, we are already looking forward to next season. Hopefully, Topps learns from this and does better.

Prizm always has a great configuration of boxes for the Premier League. It flaunts multiple retail and hobby formats, the most successful and popular hobby boxes, and the mega boxes.

We do not yet have all the specifications for these releases. However, based on previous years, we expect them to look like this:
Prizm’s staying power has been remarkable. While other sports have seen upheaval in the trading card landscape, Premier League Prizm has maintained its position as the definitive soccer release.
The design language that made Prizm famous works particularly well with soccer imagery—the action shots pop against the trademark prismatic backgrounds in a way that feels right. This time, the design is not a revelation or anything but a good spin on the classic design.

The product hits a sweet spot in pricing, too. Unlike other Prizm releases that have seen astronomical price increases, Premier League Prizm has settled into a more collector-friendly range. $250 for a hobby box in the current market is good.
For example, I remember when they cost much more during the COVID bubble. So, it’s a relief to look at the current price point. This accessibility and the Premier League’s global appeal have created a healthy market for boxes and singles.
Meanwhile, Topps has not secured exclusive rights to the autos of notable Premier League players. They got Harry Kane, but he currently plays in the Bundesliga. So, Prizm does not have the dearth of autos that has been such an issue for basketball and football.
Nonetheless, the autograph checklist can also be hit or miss. With Panini juggling multiple licenses and navigating ongoing challenges, the auto selection sometimes feels incomplete, with notable omissions from specific teams and star players.
Panini also deserves credit for consistently delivering exciting configurations, particularly with the Mega Boxes and FOTL editions. These formats offer unique parallels and the potential for big hits, keeping collectors engaged.
One recurring concern is the resale value of wax and singles, especially compared to other sports. While Premier League Prizm has a dedicated following, the market depth isn’t always there to support high prices. Collectors are savvier than ever and quick to adjust their spending based on previous years’ performance.

Another challenge is the lack of consistently hyped rookies. The Premier League is a talent factory, but translating that talent into cardboard heat is another story.
Unlike American sports, which have an established rookie card culture, soccer often sees young players with various cards and stickers before their “official” rookie card arrives. This can dilute the impact and make it harder for any single player to break through.
One reviewer on Reddit nailed it: “Honestly, it’s so fun to rip, but just don’t do it, dude. You’re spending $250 for what will probably be a terrible throwback player autograph as you hit for an unpopular team like a Southampton goalie from the 90s. And then your 5 numbered cards will probably be /49 and up again. You may hit a /5 or /10, but probably some /199s and /299s. It is usually a 300-player checklist, so considering you’re most likely to pull high-numbered cards and unpopular players, I’d say 75% of the hits you pull will be worth $1-3.”

The 2024-25 release is no exception, with a base set that likely tops 300 cards. While this allows for broad coverage of each team, it also dilutes the scarcity of the parallels.

Speaking of parallels, Prizm delivers its usual rainbow of colors and patterns:
Autographs may not be Prizm’s main draw, but they’re always a welcome addition. While the on-sticker autos aren’t everyone’s favorite, they’re more palatable than some of Panini’s higher-end products in this price range.
The autograph lineup is typically smaller and less star-studded than in other releases, but there are still some gems to be found. The main ones to look for are Penmanship, Signatures, and Dual Signatures.
Panini tends to reserve its most innovative inserts for other products, but Prizm still offers a selection of visually appealing and potentially valuable inserts. And, of course, there’s always the chase for the Color Blast. That is front and center, which are the most desirable options this release offers.
However, there are other fun ones to chase, such as Brilliance, Emergent, Fireworks, Groovy, Manga, and Talisman.
The boxes are relatively cheap. But they still cost $250. Meanwhile, the product has a reputation for being quite underwhelming in singles. But let’s crunch the numbers and see where value stands currently.

Since the inaugural release, none of the boxes have been strong enough to make back the $250 value. We can now see why the prices have gone down recently. The fact that the numbers keep going down every year is not a good sign.

The singles have some lovely selling cards this time! And man, is there a market for our friend Heung-Min Son? Call me a psychic, but I feel the buyer was in South Korea. Investing in singles from Prizm has an upside if you know what you are doing. Either way, this is a better rip than expected.
Prizm is easily the most fin soccer product and we will all miss it. The final installation looks like a good one. However, do not sit on wax since that does not age well.
But I will be buying some of this. This 2024-25 Prizm release is their swan song – a final, defiant statement that they defined an entire era of soccer card collecting.
