Rumble Kongs is part of a trend to gamify NFTs. However, in the crowded NFT space, it isn’t easy to stand out amongst seemingly countless releases. Therefore, new releases are advertised as more than “just” a digital asset. Some are marketed as a community and others as a game. Rumble Kongs sells itself as both. But does it succeed? The Rumble Kong Review is here to answer the question.
According to the developers’ description, Rumble Kongs is “A competitive 3v3 basketball game where each NFT avatar is a player on the court.”
What does a Rumble Kongs look like? Kind of like the way we expect NFTs to look in the current landscape. Somewhat abrasive-looking monkeys, not unlike the highly successful Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC).
Suspiciously enough, the number of minted NFTs is identical to the 10,000 issued by BAYC. The first minting sold out within a week. While more Rumble Kongs minted will be minted, the first generation of “genesis Kongs” is expected to maintain an exceptionally high value.
As it turns out, some members of the staff of Rumble Kongs met in the vibrant BAYC community and were inspired by it. However, they want to make their NFTs more versatile.

The developers have come up with a list of 100+ possible traits. They are then distributed at random among the Rumble Kongs. The result, the developers assure us, is that no two Rumble Kongs are identical.
The visual traits are just for show. They do not have any impact on the gameplay and the ability of the Kongs. That means that having a Kong with closes eyes won’t diminish his shooting ability.
The main difference between BAYC and Rumble Kongs is that the latter is the basis for a game. As the OpenSea site for Rumble Kongs puts it:
“Rumble Kong League is a competitive play-to-earn basketball experience, combining engaging gameplay and web3 functionalities, enabling users to compete in engaging ways through NFTs. Only one Kong is needed to play the game; everyone is welcome!”
That description leaves us with one crucial question.
Web3 is one of many new buzzwords thrown around to signal the shift in the character of the internet. It refers to a decentralized World Wide Web, not controlled by the big tech companies and based on Blockchain.
The most significant difference between the 2.0 and 3.0 visions of the internet is the immediacy of ownership. While sites owned by Silicon Valley dominate the World Wide Web, a Blockchain internet is owned directly by the users. Transactions in Web3 occur between users and are not arbitrated by third parties. In addition, with no intermediary, users’ privacy will be better protected. That is the idea, at any rate.
If the term seems somewhat vague to your taste, you are not alone. But a future internet with many games and NFTs looks highly likely. So, you can call it what you will.
Web3 is still in its formative stages, but new releases are trying to fit in.
The developers plan to open the game and leagues to external NFTs. Therefore, eventually, you will not need a Kong to play.
According to the developers: “Ideally any external NFT Avatar project should have the possibility of joining the league, increasing the pool of available players. This means that those tokens can be “imported” into the league and will receive Boosts and performance stats as existing Kongs.”
The integration of different platforms and NFTs into one gaming sphere is one of the building blocks of Web3. However, the developers are aware of maintaining a certain exclusivity for actual Rumble Kongs.
Therefore: “to keep Kongs exclusive, but allowing other Avatar collections to enter, we will be gating certain features to Kongs only. This means that an external collection will not have the same level of access to leagues and tournaments as Kongs do. While anyone will be able to play pickup matches and non-competitive, there will be leagues that you are unable to enter unless you own a Kong.”
The game is central to the Rumble Kong concept. Marcus Blasche runs the Rumble Kongs League. He explained:
“Our goal is to provide sports fans with a unique and memorable experience inside the Rumble Kong League. The NFT and the Metaverse have a huge impact on the gaming world. We want to build the go-to sports ecosystem and push the boundaries of the web3 space.”
You only need one Rumble Kong to play the game. That is good news, considering the price of each character. However, there are different ways you can participate. In fact, you can even play without owning an NFT.
The Rumble Kongs NFTs are made game-ready. Each as randomly generated stats, representing the ability of each Rumble Kong. The stats are known as “Boosts,” and each Rumble Kong has four of them.
Boosts are intuitively easy to understand, with 1 being the lowest and 100 being the highest possible score. The four metrics are:
The Rumble Kongs have boosts that determine their effectiveness in play (picture taken from Rumble Kongs).
If your Rumble Kong has suboptimal Boosts, do not despair. According to the developers, “leagues will ensure that similarly skilled Kongs will play against each other.” So, you will always be competitive.
You can also improve the boosts of your Kongs. There are two ways to do so:
At first, the game will be algorithm-driven. That means, as the developers admit in their white paper: “Games will require minimal user impact for the first version of the game, and actions on the court are played out through actions being performed.” However, the developers plan to upgrade gameplay to be more interactive and arcade-like eventually.
In a way, it is like having a player in a fantasy league. But since these are NFTs rather than athletes, you can keep them forever. Of course, you can also resell and trade your Rumble Kongs as you see fit.
The game is played 3 against 3. So, if you want to control an entire team rather than participate in a game, you will need at least 3 Rumble Kongs.
Putting together a team is like what a GM of an NBA team does. The white paper expounds on this:
“When it comes to creating a lineup of players, it is important to understand each starting player’s Boosts, their synergies with other players, as well as knowing the opponents’ team. A well-balanced team, which has synergies with each other will potentially outperform another team, which is focusing only on Shooting across all players.”
So, you can’t just put together a bunch of Kongs with good shooting and expect to win. Otherwise, you end up with a 2021-22 LA Lakers situation.

The Play-To-Earn function has driven the gamification of NFTs this year. The idea is simple. Players can earn NFTs or cryptocurrency for playing games. For obvious reasons, the potential rewards drive traffic and interest in participating.
The Axie Infinity game has managed to grow impressively, largely thanks to this model. They describe the Play-To-Earn function in the following manner:
“Players are able to have fun and work towards ambitious goals while simultaneously earning potential resources that will have real monetary value due to an open economic system and demand from other players.”
Rumble Kongs will offer a similar structure to Axie Infinity. Whenever you play a game, you can earn points that will allow you to upgrade your character. It is not dissimilar to the experience points system in Dungeons & Dragons. However, unlike the old role-playing game, you can also sell your points for money.
A Rumble Kong is both an NFT and part of a game. Therefore, like Magic: The Gathering, value results from scarcity and playability.
There are two levels of scarcity in the initial mint of Rumble Kongs. 95% of the Kongs are from the same generation batch and have similar though distinct traits. The other 5% emanate from a different batch and have rare characteristics. The developers say, “it was important to us that rare Kongs look and feel very rare.”
Scarcity will become a more significant factor as future mints unfold. So, you can expect playability to play a vital role in determining initial value.
The developers of Rumble Kongs are working on their own platform for trading and sales.
However, as of now, you can purchase them from the most common NFT secondary marketplaces. Most notably, OpenSea and Rarible. But don’t expect to get it on the cheap. For example, the floor price to purchase a Rumble Kong is currently 2.39 ETH. That is $7,552. Meanwhile, the most expensive NFTs sell for 45 ETH, or over $140,000.
Needless to say, that is out of the reach for most people in the hobby.
In the future, there will be other ways to obtain new Rumble Kongs:
The short answer is yes. However, the Rumble Kongs creators are planning two solutions to lower the buy-in for people with a casual interest in the release:
As we all know, every NFT release worth its salt has some big-time celebrities involved. Here is a partial list of those involved:
The most notable amongst the first mint of Rumble Kongs owners is Steph Curry. Indeed, the legendary shooter is heavily involved in the release. Curry’s NFT line, Genesis Curry Flow, is wearable and playable within the Rumble Kongs game.

When you buy an NFT, you acquire a lot more than just a digital image. One of the biggest attractions is the sense of community which can unite owners around an exciting project. For example, the strength and exclusivity of the BAYC community have been one of the line’s major selling points.
The Discord server is particularly welcoming and filled with enthusiastic Rumble Kong owners. In addition, many of the top NFT influencers are also part of the burgeoning community. Therefore, this is one of the strengths of the franchise.
Rumble Kongs is not for everyone. However, it appears to be one of the most serious attempts to gamify NFTs currently on the market. The value of the NFTs is quite high, and it is backed and used by high-profile athletes.
The brand is not yet one of the top ones on OpeanSea. However, that makes sense since the gameplay is not open yet. However, once it does in 2022, there will be far more excitement around Rumble Kongs. Some of the exciting features, such as clubs with fanbase and rookie year scouting, seem very promising. Due to the value-added gamification and integration into web3, Rumble Kongs has a bright future ahead.
