upper deck 2022-23 series 1 hockey

Hockey season is now well underway, and you know what that means. So it’s time for the flagship release for ice combat collectors. Cardlines always has its eye on the puck, and we present you with 2022/23 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Review and Checklist.

We will cover the Young Guns from 2022/23 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey in the next few days.

2022-23 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey release date

There have been some issues with delays amongst all of the big card-producing companies. However, Upper Deck has arguably been the worst hit. Last year, this release was pushed all the way from the initial November goal to March 2022. So, if you are thinking, really? Didn’t Upper Deck just release Series 1 Hockey? The answer is yes. They did.

But this year, the company appears to be on schedule. You can expect the hobby boxes to drop on November 9, 2022. Meanwhile, the retail products are slated to release on November 30, 2022.

As always, the dates are subject to change at short notice. However, my guess is that they will get everything out on time due to the importance of the release and trauma from last year’s delay.

History of Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey

The Upper Deck company released its first set in 1989 and set a new standard for high-quality cards. They launched their hockey flagship series in 1990-91, and the set included the first crop of Young Guns.

At first, the insert did not take off, there were simply too many of them, and it was shelved. However, the company brought them back in 1999-00 as lower print cards. That rookie series remains the main attraction in the release to this day.

The set had its heyday in the 2005-06 season. That year followed a lockout, which kept many promising rookies off the ice. As a result, the rookie crop that followed was ridiculously talented and deep. A remarkable number of the top rookies from that year became big stars.

Easily the most recognizable names are Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin. Their Young Guns cards are particularly sought after and beloved. They helped the series attain its dominant position in the hockey card world.

2022-23 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey checklist

Full details of the checklist have not been released yet. We can expect them closer to the official release date. However, we have quite a bit of info on the inserts and the complete list of Young Guns for 2022/23 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey.

Note that Series 1 will not include any selections from the 2022 NHL Draft. For those players, fans will have to await Series 2.

There are 250 cards in the product checklist. One hundred ninety-eight of them are base cards, while 50 of them are Young Guns. The remaining two are checklists, one for the Young Guns cards and one for the base cards.

Upper Deck 2022-23 Series 1 Hockey inserts

Aside from the vaunted Young Guns, this release has an excellent selection of inserts. Some of them are beloved classics. Always the aesthetic highlight of the set, the UD Canvas set has 120 cards this time. It comes in the following varieties:

  • UD Canvas veterans (1:7 packs)
  • UD Canvas Young Guns (1:48 packs)
  • Printing Plates (1/1)

Center of Attention

A new insert puts the NHL’s best centers where they belong. Ummm, at the center of attention. So, if you want an aesthetically pleasing tour of the best middlemen out there, here you go! You can expect to hit one of these cards in every 16 packs.

Free Styles

The concept for this new insert appears to be graffiti or street art in its correct moniker. Quite what this has to do with hockey, I don’t know. But we like the look. You can pull one in every 72 packs ripped.

Population count

These cards are very creative and should appear to hardcore card people. The population count cards have a graded card aesthetic, as befitting an insert paying tribute to grading terminology. The cards give you the “population count,” which represents the print run of the cards. Love it.

Upper Deck 2022-23 Series 1 Hockey value

On the one hand, we are talking about a flagship product here. So, it isn’t a bonanza for value. These products are meant for set collectors and fans rather than flippers and investors. On the other, including Young Guns and UD Canvas cards means that boxes have integral value.

So, this release’s overall value picture can be confusing. But we are here to clear things up for you. Let’s look at how wax and singles from this release fair over the years.

Upper Deck Hockey hobby box box value

Hobby boxes of 2022/23 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey are very reasonably priced. You can pick one up for $100 right now. So, the bar it needs to clear for profitability is pretty low. But does it clear it? Let’s see:

SetValue
2017-18$156
2018-19$264
2019-20$138
2020-21$115
2021-22$87

The latest hobby box is now worth less than the price of a new one. Of course, that is never a particularly good sign. Still, it will likely appreciate as the box gets older and some of the players in that crop make a name for themselves.

Still, these boxes age decently enough. The 2018/2019 box is worth over double because of the strong rookie class. It’s not a sure thing. But these cheap boxes can pay excellent dividends if you believe in the rookie class.

But if the class looks mediocre, avoid it. To me, the current bunch of Young Guns isn’t the best. But you may feel differently.

Upper Deck Hockey retail box value

What about Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey retail products? Let’s check out the prices:

YearBlasterFat Pack
2017-18$49$13
2018-19$51$20
2019-20$43$12.50
2020-21$49$17
2021-22$36$14.50

The fat pack is no kind of investment at all. But I’m sure this comes as no surprise to you. They are rarely worth keeping around unless there is a massive rookie in that year’s release.

However, a bit more surprising is how reliably strong the blasters are an investment. You can pretty much guarantee to double your money within a couple of years. So, if you throw a few of these in your storage space, you will make a substantial profit margin. Stronger than the hobby box. You heard it first at Cardlines.

Upper Deck Hockey card value

What about the singles in Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey products? Are they worth ripping for? Or is storing wax the move? Let’s take a look.

CardGradeValue
2017-18 Upper Deck Anze Kopitar 2006-07 Retro Acetate Young Gunsraw$450
2018-19 Upper Deck UD Retro Young Guns Acetate Henrik LundqvistPSA 10$519
2019-20 Upper Deck Cale Makar Young Guns Exclusives raw$3,319
2020-21 Upper Deck SP Authentic Future Watch Tim Stutzle AutoPSA 10$1,100
2021-22 Upper Deck Trevor Zegras Young Guns /10 High GlossPSA $10$20,000

Here you can see the secret of the Upper Deck flagship in all its glory. Despite being a reasonably priced product, you can hit incredible cards. Sure, you are likely to spend more than you earn ripping. Unfortunately, that is always the case in this hobby. But if there ever was a product with a strong argument for ripping, it’s this one.

Final thoughts of the 2022-23 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey

The Young Guns crop this year may not be the best. However, the overall value of this release cannot be denied. Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey is a beloved series and offers the potential to hit massive cards at an affordable price. This isn’t a release for stashing hobby boxes. But you can’t go wrong with packing away blasters or ripping to your heart’s content.

Honestly, basketball and football fans can only envy the value hockey collectors get for their buck. Credit to Upper Deck for managing to reliably produce a popular, affordable series that still has a market value.
