Topps has confirmed that Garbage Pail Kids will receive a Chrome Sapphire release for the third straight year. It’s expected to be available for purchase between January 30th and February 3rd, a short 129 days since the last GPK Sapphire release.

The Garbage Pail Kids were created in 1985 by Topps as a parody of the Cabbage Patch Kids. They typically include extremely deformed or violent twists on dolls that resemble Cabbage Patch Kids. Characters typically have witty names such as Adam Bomb or Ali Gator.
Topps first released a Sapphire edition of Garbage Pail Kids in 2020, which was a wild success. The 2022 release of Garbage Pail Kids Sapphire will certainly feature some chase pieces in the form of the Padparadscha parallel.
Not much information has come out about this year’s product, but it’s safe to assume it will follow the basics of all Sapphire releases. The cards will be on a chromium stock with sapphire blue borders and a patterned background.
As a premium Topps brand, you can expect superb card quality and a certain shininess associated with the Sapphire brand.

Judging from past releases, GPK Sapphire will only have a hobby box release. If they use the same odds as last year, you can expect the following from each box.

No checklist has been announced, but like all Sapphire releases, we can expect plenty of numbered parallels. The base set will consist of 100 cards from the 2022 GPK Original Series 5 release.
It will also include the DEE Faced and Handy RANDY puzzles.
Judging from last year, these are the parallels we expect to make an appearance in the 2022 release.
After only two releases, we know that demand has been sky-high for this product, even with the price hikes. But what does that mean for the future of the product and investors?

Let’s take a look at the hobby box prices from 2020 and 2021.
As you can see, the 2020 hobby boxes have shown stunning growth, selling for $900 more than MSRP. 2021 boxes have also grown in value, but for a more modest $60 improvement.
It’s important to note that it’s only been a little more than 4 months since the release of the 2021 set, so that price will likely continue to grow. Overall, I would expect hobby boxes to be a solid investment considering the demand for the product.

Even with the limited information available, it’s likely that 2022 GPK Sapphire will be a hit among collectors judging from the past two years. Since 2020, Garbage Pail Kids Sapphire has had a meteoric rise to one of Topps most consistently valuable brands. I fully expect this year’s release to sell out minutes after they become available for purchase.
