An introduction to Impeccable Basketball 2023

Impeccable Basketball 2023-24 is scheduled to release on September 13th, 2024, and while we don’t have a pre-order price at the time of writing, we’re estimating it to be around $2,000. 

This year’s release is particularly noteworthy because of the return of Tim Duncan cards, which are debuting for the first time in over 2 decades in this set as part of a new deal between Tim Duncan and Panini. 

Of the deal, Duncan said, “It’s been years since I’ve had an autographed trading card. I felt it was time to return to the industry so fans could get the chance to get cards with my signature. Trading cards have come a long way since I last signed them. Panini America has developed some really cool cards and brands while taking the popularity of NBA trading cards to a whole new level, so it made sense to partner with them.”

But how cool of cards can you find in Impeccable?

Impeccable is a very nice product. It’s high-end with nice, low-numbered cards that look and feel premium. The big chink in its armor, particularly for 2023-24, is that Impeccable doesn’t include autographs of the other Spurs big man you’re probably chasing: Victor Wembanyama.

Unpacking the 2023-24 Impeccable basketball set 

Impeccable is a premium card series known for its on-card autographs and unique inserts and, true to its name, a lot of its sets are themed around precious minerals. 

Each Impeccable Hobby Box is packed with five on-card autographs, three base or base parallels, and one special insert.

Parallels and Inserts

The special inserts range from Stainless Stars, Silver/Gold Bar Inserts, Game Day Logoman/Rookie Logoman, to Un-Signed Number Call-Out Cards.

 The product highlights include Elegance Rookie Jersey Autographs featuring memorabilia cards autographed by top rookies. Additionally, collectors can find themed autographs and insert sets uniquely numbered, reflecting a player’s jersey number, draft pick, or a specific stat. 

This year, the release introduces the Impeccable All-Time Signatures set and includes non-auto and autographed versions of Stainless Stars with ultra-rare parallels numbered as low as 1.

On top of that, the release features highly sought-after Impeccable Game Day Logoman and Rookie Logoman autographs, including a new Elegance Rookie Logoman Autographs insert that showcases a logoman from a specific game.

Should you invest in Panini Impeccable Basketball?

At an estimated $2,000/box, is the 2023 Impeccable Basketball release worth the dice roll? If so, how should you approach it?

Investing in a sealed box

Is it a good hold as a sealed product? Considering the hefty release day price, let’s look at how 2023 Impeccable basketball stacks up to years prior.

Here’s the value of the last few years based on recent sales (as of 4/16/24)

With all this said, remember, it’s hard to anchor the price of 2023-24 to the previous years because it doesn’t have autographs from Wembanyama. We’d have to ask ourselves what 2020-21 would look like without Anthony Edwards. 

So, for that reason alone, I’d warn against investing in this one as a long-term hold. Of course, the sports card market could rise as a whole again, but when you remove Wemby autographs from the set list, this box loses its luster. And, on top of that, this product is driven by autographs. Over half the cards are autographs, and those cards can’t be Wembby. 

Stay away from this box. For the price, chase something with more rookies and parallels, like Prizm.

Investing in Impeccable Basketball singles

If you’re looking to invest in singles, the best cards would be numbered Impeccable parallels and rookie autographs from the rookies included in the set.  If you can buy raw and get them graded the upside increases.

So buy short prints, autographs and colored parallels if you want a long-term Impeccable hold.

Bottom line: Should you rip, hold, or pass on 2023 Impeccable Basketball?

Impeccable Basketball is too autograph-driven to be a long-term hold as a sealed product, and its limited checklist makes it tough for single investments. As a whole, it’s a product you don’t want to mess with for 2023. Steer clear and chase something else.
