2024 Topps Spotlight base set & design

The cards feature interpretations of existing cards done by Friedman in ink and watercolor. These cards range from vintage classics to recent rookie cards. This is the third such set released by Topps, the last in 2022.

The checklist consists of a mix of retired greats, current veterans, and young stars, although doesn’t contain any rookie cards of its own. Due to the subject matter and smaller checklist, the set is stacked with popular names.

2024 Topps Spotlight parallels

Numbered parallels are a big part of the fun in 2024 Topps Spotlight, with both release formats featuring exclusives, and all numbered parallels to 75 or less.

2024 Topps Spotlight value

2024 Topps Spotlight is an art-influenced, online-exclusive offering. What can recent comps from prior years tell us about the potential these may offer if bought and held unopened?

Year/FormatRelease Price / Recent Comp Price
2024 Standard$50 / $70-80
2024 Collectors$170 / $250-280
2022$20 / $30-40
2021$20 / $50-60

Spotlight was not released in 2023. The 2021 and 2022 releases were quite different at significantly lower price point and a single release format. Still, those $20 boxes now sell for more than the release price. Does that mean that 2024 will?

The original release price and the price on the secondary market are both higher than in prior years, causing some wonder as to if they have the same potential. With no data to go on, my gut says these aren’t likely to increase significantly in value unopened.

In terms of singles, what can recent sales of 2022 Topps Spotlight singles tell us about the potential value in 2024 Topps Spotlight?

The high water mark was a Jarren Duran 1/1 Original Artwork, which sold for $142. A Thurman Munson 1971 Artist Signed 13/20 sold for $105. A Jim Kaat Autographed 1/1 Magenta Test Print sold for $100. Prices dropped pretty quickly from there.

From a $20 box, these aren’t bad prices. One would hope the high water mark potential on the higher-priced 2024 boxes would like-wise be higher, although that’s not guaranteed.

2024 Topps Spotlight pros & cons

Every product has pros and cons when deciding whether to purchase and break them. What are some of the pros and cons with 2024 Topps Spotlight?

Shop for 2024 Topps Spotlight on eBay

Pros

  • These cards, with their artistic take on classic cards and designs, are nice looking cards and bring some fun. The blend of the new with the familiar is a nice touch.
  • With two formats to choose from and a nice mix of parallels, inserts, and autographs, these having the making of a fun break.

Cons

  • The cost of boxes continues to rise, and this product is no different. The value proposition at this significantly higher price point is a bit of an unknown.
  • The product, while it features several players with 2024 rookie cards, doesn’t appear to actually carry any true rookie cards on the checklist. As all the cards are based on pre-existing cards, that’s not a big shock, but the set is unlikely to be driven upward by rookie card values.

Final thoughts on 2024 Topps Spotlight

After a one year hiatus in 2023, Topps Spotlight is back for 2024 with the same online-exclusive release and Andy Friedman artwork. The format of the boxes, the hits, and the price point are all significantly different, moving this from a fun cheap break into something a bit more different.

These are nice looking cards, and they should make for a fun and enjoyable break. The potential for return on investment however, is a bit cloudier.
