In the 2023-24 edition, Prizm Monopoly brings together the popular sports trading card brand and the classic board game in a second edition, known as the 2023-24 Panini Prizm Monopoly Basketball. This unexpected collaboration allows collectors to either integrate chrome cards into the traditional Monopoly game or simply focus on collecting the cards themselves.

What to expect from 2023-24 Prizm Monopoly Basketball

The primary set consists of 90 cards, featuring a blend of veterans and rookies, including notable players like Victor Wembanyama. The set closely resembles a typical Prizm release, with the distinctive chromium stock providing a signature metallic shine.

Parallels introduce a touch of color, and the Monopoly theme is evident in the incorporation of icons and logos from the classic board game into some card borders.

Notably, Prizm’s Color Blast inserts take on a new twist with the introduction of challenging Money Blast inserts, replacing the usual burst of color with a cloud of dollar bills. While Prizm Monopoly offers packs and blaster boxes, there’s also a board game included to engage collectors.

Whether collectors choose to play or solely focus on collecting, the set is available at Target initially in the United States, with broader availability expected later.

Why we like Prizm Basketball Monopoly

Prizm Monopoly cards are not going to age nearly as well as standard Prizm and the blasters (boosters) won’t hold have as well, but there are several reasons why Monopoly Prizm might be a better rip.

A shorter checklist

With only 90 cards in the base set, your odds of hitting top talent or rookies is significantly higher. It’s just rookies and top veteran talent.

Better odds of numbered cards

If you’re ripping a Prizm blaster, you’re probably more likely to be struck by lightning than to pull a numbered card. With Monopoly, however, they can be pulled pretty frequently. It’s tough to say for sure, but we’d guess about 1:3 boxes.

No more expensive format

With Prizm blasters, all the big money is found in Prizm hobby boxes. With Prizm Monopoly, there isn’t a more expensive format to hold the best cards. They’re all distributed in Monopoly blasters and game board packs.

How should you invest in 2023-24 Prizm Monopoly?

For singles, I wouldn’t recommend buying Monopoly cards as a long term hold. The cards aren’t worth as much in a one-to-one comparison with standard prizm, and they most likely won’t hold value as well once Prizm no longer is a top NBA brand and Topps takes over. They’re an oddity, for sure, and will always be viewed as such.

But, that’s not the appeal of Prizm Monopoly. The value of this product is to be found in ripping if you can find it at retail price. And that’s not to say you’re certainly going to make money – you’re just less likely to lose money on Prizm Monopoly booster boxes than standard Prizm boxes. 

Bottom line: Should you rip, flip, hold or pass on 2023-24 Panini Prizm Monopoly Basketball?

Prizm Monopoly is an unlikely pairing of two popular brands, and while a bit unusual, it holds some big cards if you want to roll the dice and rip some boxes. The short checklist, lack of hobby formats and more raises the ceiling for this product as a rip.
