2023 Prestige Football: No Hobby Box, No Problem

Prestige Football doesn’t have a hobby box format, but that doesn’t stop it from being a surprisingly fun release. 

But with a price set at $80/box for the H2 format, is 2023 Prestige a hold, pass, or perhaps a rip? Let’s look at the numbers and the important notes for this year.

An introduction to 2023 Prestige Football

PSA before we continue: 2023 Prestige Football will not have autographs of Bryce Young, CJ Stroud or Will Levis. All three of them signed an exclusive deal with Fanatics and don’t feature autographs in Panini products. 

Prestige doesn’t have a hobby box version. For collectors who enjoy ripping retail, that could be a good thing. When there isn’t a premium autograph to push all the biggest hits into, retail products have shown to carry a lot better selection of cards. 

Prestige is set to release in three formats: H2 (hobby-hybrid), mega, and blaster boxes. We’ll look at the contents of each.

Prestige has been around for over a decade, and while this non-hobby format isn’t debuting this year, it is surprising to see Panini pick this brand to axe the hobby box while insisting on making hobby versions of several others that don’t seem as worthy.

That’s only to say Prestige is a pretty sold brand.

The 2023 Panini Prestige Football set is expansive, featuring a wide-ranging checklist that includes numerous autographs, a wide variety of low-cost insert cards, and a base set offering more than 20 parallel variations.

Autographs in Prestige Football 2023

Autographs are a significant element of the set, adding value for collectors.

“Distinctive Ink” is a standalone autograph subset that is exclusively available in blaster boxes.

Autograph cards can also be found in subsets like “Draft Day Signatures” and “NFL Passport Signatures.”

Premium Xtra Points Signatures are available for select cards, featuring various parallels, including Red (/199 or fewer), Blue (/99 or fewer), Gold (/50), Pink (/25), Platinum (/10), and Black (1/1).

Inserts and parallels

The set features a variety of parallels adopting the “Xtra Points” theme, which not only come in different colors but also offer distinct background patterns.

In addition to the standard parallels, premium versions of parallels are available.

The base cards have a total of 23 different parallels, with 18 of them being serial-numbered for added rarity and collectibility.

Some cards within the set also have “Premium Xtra Points Signatures” with their unique parallels, including Red (/199 or fewer), Blue (/99 or fewer), Gold (/50), Pink (/25), Platinum (/10), and the ultra-rare Black (1/1) parallels.

Various insert sets, such as “Alma Maters,” “Any Given Sunday,” “For the Record,” “Franchise Favorites,” “Heroes,” “Living Legends,” “Power House,” “Prestigious Pros,” “Time Stamped,” and “Youth Movement,” feature their own set of Xtra Points parallels in a range of colors and serial numbered quantities, making them highly collectible. Many of these insert sets also offer autographed versions.

Should you invest in Prestige Football 2023?

Is the 2024 Prestige Football release worth the dice roll? If so, how should you approach it?

Investing in sealed boxes of 2023 Prestige Football

Prestige feels like it has potential because the buy-in is so affordable compared to most hobby-driven sets. In other words, it doesn’t cost as much to have the most sought-after box.

We don’t have a long track record of sales, but 2022 H2 boxes are selling for $130 (as of 11/7/2023). The 2023 rookie class is much better, so the $80 H2 boxes seem like a bargain. 

Note that the 2022 and 2023 mega boxes are selling for about the same price, so if you’re investing, go with the H2. 

Based on the H2 success from last year, this Prestige box is surprisingly the best potential investment we’ve seen thus far in 2023 football.

Investing in Prestige football singles

If you’re looking to invest in singles, the best cards would be numbered Prestige parallels and rookie autographs. If you can buy raw and get them graded, bonus points for that. 

Nothing else will age well, even the PSA 10s of base rookies. So buy short prints, autographs and colored parallels if you want a long-term Prestige hold. 

Bottom line: Rip, hold or pass on 2023 Prestige Football?

Prestige Football is surprisingly the best long-term potential investment we’ve seen in 2023, and at $80, it could be a very fun rip, too.
