2024-25 Premier League Sports Card Preview

After a painful break where fans had no idea what to do with themselves (well, after the Euros were over anyway), soccer is back!

The world’s biggest and most lucrative league, the English Premier League returns with its first game on August 16, 2024 (it started with Manchester United vs. Fulham if you are keeping track). It may be a while before we get cards for this season since Panini is pretty backed up in this regard.

However, we are incredibly excited for this season and the fabulous cards that will follow. But be careful with the brands and cards that you buy into. Not all of them keep value or are even released regularly. But worry not.

We have covered all your Brit footie card collecting needs. Here is our 2024-25 Premier League Sports Card Preview.

Recapping the 2023-24 Premier League Season

In its crazy way, the 2023-24 English Premier League season was one of the best in recent memory. We had an actual title race instead of Manchester City just running away with the title.

With massive amounts of Qatari money behind them, that team has won six out of the last seven titles, often making the championship an afterthought. But not in 2023-24. We enjoyed a class three-way title race affair. City won the title anyway, but let’s focus on the race part.

There wasn’t much of a relegation battle, which is surprising because that is usually way more exciting than the title race.

What can we expect from the 2024-25 Premier League season

Expecting Man City to run away with the title is always tempting. But it seems that Arsenal has been building something promising. They have sustained title challenges over the last two years, and things could break their way this year.

They remain one of the younger teams in the league, but everyone has a year more of experience, and some intelligent activity on the transfer market could make the difference.

Liverpool have a new manager in Arne Slot, who will probably have an adjustment period. It’s hard to imagine that he will have the same incredible success as Jurgen Klopp. But then again, no one expected that of Klopp either. Chelsea, Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Tottenham will try to get their act together and challenge, but the distance between them and the top three seems significant.

But one thing is sure: the Premier League’s level of play will remain the best in the world. The budgets and expertise will remain higher than in rival leagues. That also means the cards will continue to be more valuable than those of any league.

The best rookies for the 2023-24 English Premier League season

That is all awesome, but from a sports card perspective, the biggest question is always the rookies. Well, the 2023-24 season delivered what may have been the best crop of youngsters in years. Many people paid particular attention to Kobbie Mainoo, the prodigious talent from Manchester United.

At age 19, he has appeared on the England senior side 9 times. So it’s fair to say that he is making serious waves. As for value, some concerns surround the fact that he is more of a central midfielder than an attacker.

But still, there have been some excellent sales of his cards. For example, a 2023-24 Kobbie Mainoo Prizm EPL Blue Shimmer /8 PSA 10 has sold for $1,905.

The other dude everyone has been talking about is Lewis Miley. At 18, he hasn’t broken into the England team yet, but it’s just a matter of time. There is little doubt that Miley is world-class. But again, he is not an attacking player.

Indeed, his deep-holding role is even less glamorous than the Mainoo. But his cards are also doing very well. A 2023-24 Prizm Premier League Lewis Miley Nebula Choice 1/1 PSA 10 went for a commendable $4,500.

While I am not sure these players’ value will remain this high, their selling prices are still significant. In previous years, finding rookies selling for a top dollar wasn’t easy.

Mainly established, stars from elsewhere like Cristiano Ronaldo (in his Manchester United Days) or Erling Haaland got top dollar. But it looks like rookie cards of locally developed players are becoming more valuable. EPL prospecting is now a thing; we are super excited about it.

Which young players will break out in the 2024-25 Premier League season

Predicting who the biggest rookies will be in soccer can be challenging. Discovering young talent in this sport is far less streamlined than in the United States, where prospects are ranked, there is a draft, and so on. Predicting who will get minutes on the pitch, who will get l, and so on can be challenging.

However, I did my best to identify the players with the best chance of breaking out this year.

Ethan Nwaneri – Arsenal – Central Midfield

The 17-year-old prodigy from Arsenal received his rookie card in the 2023-24 EPL Prizm release. The cards are not worth much yet, but that could soon change.

What stands out for Ethan is his incredible technique and first touch. But the dribbling skills he brings are also impressive. It’s tough to get the ball off his foot. Another thing working in his favor is the versatility this guy brings to the table.

While feeling most comfortable in the middle, he can run out on the wings comfortably on either side. This player has so much upside; he seems like a no-brainer to invest in at current low values.

Matheus Franca – Crystal Palace – Forward

Franca came to Crystal Palace as a highly touted potential star from the Brazilian side of Flamengo. When he was healthy, he already looked like a star in 2023-24.

But injuries stopped him from having the impact that he could have enjoyed. But there don’t seem to be any long-term health problems to contend with, and he should be a starter for Palace next year.

With the loss of Michael Olise in the midfield, they will need a new star to build on a great season last year. There is a good chance that Franco will be at the forefront of that development.

Will Alves – Leicester – Left Wing

It has long been understood that Will will be a starter at Leicester, though he is still a teenager. He was one of those young players who excelled at every level. In 2005, BBC featured him in their ‘Football Wonderkids’ series, showcasing his incredible dribbling and shooting skills.

He never regressed and has always looked fantastic since. And 2024-25 looks like it will be the year he finally makes it into the starting lineup. Last year, he suffered a terrible. Injury, so the long-awaited Alves breakout was delayed. But talent like this cannot be held back for long.

Alves does not have a rookie card yet, but I would be shocked if we don’t see one for the 2024-25 release. It may be the key for the entire set, so watch for it.

Trey Nyoni – Liverpool – Central Midfield

In recent years, there seems to have been an explosion of young English talent at central midfield. Spain is the only country developing anything like that at this position. Nyoni is one of those impossibly polished young talents.

What is striking is how efficient this 17-year-old player is. Coming into this season, he boasts a dribble success rate of 81.82% and a pass completion rate of 88.54%. Those are the numbers you expect from a world-class midfield maestro.

There is no doubt about talent, but getting minutes at Liverpool at this age will be very difficult, regardless of talent.

Nonetheless, Nyoni will break into the team at some point—if not this year, then next. He has plenty of time to develop. The player already has a Topps NOW card for his first goal, but no rookies. We would be surprised if he doesn’t play enough to get a rookie in the 2024-25 sets.

Mikey Moore – Tottenham – Winger

Mikey is already the youngest player to ever appear for Tottenham and is considered the best talent to emerge from a system that has been producing top-level talent for a while now.

The news that Spurs will not loan him out this year implies that he will have a significant role in the North London team. He is a very offensive player, able to play on the wing while cutting inside, which should be suitable for the value of his cards. And he can score or aft as the playmaker. There is a reason Moore is getting this much attention.

There are no Mikey Moore cards yet, but barring unforeseen developments, we will see some in 2024-25.

What card sets can we expect for the 2024-25 season?

The EPL is one of the few leagues with a solid relationship with Panini. Because of their European roots and deep ties in soccer, the company is doing better there than elsewhere.

The main release for the Premier League by a mile is Prizm. The box from last year dropped on February 14, 2024. Panini has been doing some work to improve their release dates, so maybe we can expect it earlier, but I doubt we will see it come down the pipeline before 2025. However, considering the rookies in the release, it is well worth the wait.

The rest of the Premier League card releases

The other releases for this league are a bit of a mixed bag. The score has come out every year since its inception during the COVID-19 boom, but it has never been trendy.

The Donruss Elite Premier League product last came out in 2022-23. Since we have not seen one for the last season, it has probably been discontinued. However, I doubt anyone will miss it all that much. It is the same story for Panini Revolution Premier League Soccer, which has disappeared, and no one cared.

The more high-end Panini Impeccable Premier League Soccer has carved more of a niche. But the product is way behind in production. The 2023-24 edition will come out on August 30, 2024. So we won’t see the 2024-25 one any time soon.

The Chronicles release contains Premier League cards, but the checklist also includes players from La Liga and Serie A.

The only real rival to Prizm that seriously impacts the market is Panini Select Premier League. That product was done quite well with all the soccer leagues. However, it is also well behind schedule, with the 2023-24 hobby boxes released on July 10, 2024. If we are fortunate, we can expect the 2024-25 release to arrive towards the end of the season.

Final word on the 2024-25 Premier League Sports Card Preview

A few years ago, people predicted an explosion in the popularity of soccer cards. Many boxes were sold for inflated prices, and there was a lot of buzz around them. But that never happened.

Instead, the soccer card community has built slowly and steadily. Now, prices and values for rookies are up.

There is a lot of excitement around this season, which promises to be great. Hopefully, we will have an actual title chase in 2023-24, and there will undoubtedly be some incredible rookies. B

ut it isn’t clear how many releases will come out for Premier League cards this year. Brands seem to be dropping like flies here. So, stick to Prizm or Select.
