2024 Origins Football Checklist Review: Caleb Williams Has Arrived But With Some Notable Missing Autos

The Origins Football franchise returns for the 2024 season, continuing its legacy as a rookie-focused product (telling “origins stories,” if you will), but this year it does so without some of the most noteworthy rookie signers…a theme we’ll be seeing in all of 2024 football.

An introduction to 2024 Panini Origins Football

Releasing at $375, Origins football is here. Known for its vibrant, artistic designs and bold color splashes, this year’s release highlights the rookie class while providing collectors with a mix of autographs, memorabilia, and inserts.

The 2024 set offers a smaller 100-card base set, making it the most compact checklists of the season thus ar.

While hobby boxes may seem light, containing only seven cards, they still deliver three hits per box, including an autographed memorabilia card and a second signature.

This streamlined approach emphasizes quality over quantity, but does it meet expectations for both rookie collectors and those seeking the early season flair Origins is known for?

Let’s look at some of the concerns.

A few red flags with Origins 2024 Football

Like every 2024 Panini football product, there are a few caveats that come with 2024 Origins.

I will be saying this in every 2024 product review I write: many of the top 2024 draft picks are working exclusively with Fanatics on autographs: Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, AD Mitchell, Malik Nabers, Brendan Rice, Jayden Daniels, Brian Thomas Jr., Xavier Worthy, and Rome Odunze, to name a few.

These athletes agreed to no more autos with Panini, but they could still have some in this set. (Rome Odunze seems to).

And with a 7-card box that’s driven primarily with autographs, it’s a set that falls particularly flat without top rookie signers. Yes, you’ll be able to pull rookies or rookie variations, but they’d have to be really special rookie cards to make up for the $375 price tag.

There’s one glimmer of hope, though: this is the first Panini release to include Caleb Williams cards at all. And not autographs — I mean in general. So having licensed cards of him in his NFL threads will carry a lot of value, just not enough to make the box price seem like a good deal.

A breakdown of what is inside 2024 Origins Football checklist

The 2024 Panini Origins Football set continues its tradition of blending artistic designs with a compact checklist. The base set features 150 cards, with 100 veterans and retired stars, complemented by 50 rookies, all set against the signature abstract backgrounds Origins is known for.

While the design remains a highlight, the content might leave some collectors underwhelmed, especially those looking for premium autograph offerings.

2024 Origins Football autographs

On the autograph front, Rookie Autographs are the primary draw for collectors, and the good news is that many of these are on-card, including subsets like Receiving Stars and Passing Stars. These provide hard-signed signatures of top rookies, making them more appealing for those seeking personalized content.

Dual and Triple Autographs also continue with the on-card theme, giving collectors the chance to chase multiple autographs on a single card.

However, the Rookie Jumbo Jersey Autographs rely on sticker autographs from only a percentage of the top prospects.. This can be disappointing for collectors expecting more premium content in a high-end product like Origins.

2024 Origins Football relics

The rookie theme extends to other memorabilia offerings, such as Rookie Patches and Rookie Jumbo Jerseys, which focus on the freshman class but lack the signature quality of the autographs.

Inserts like Blank Slate, Origin Story, and the international blaster-exclusive Big Bang are visually striking and add variety to the product. However, while they contribute to the overall artistic appeal, they may not be enough to offset the lack of hard-signed autographs in some key areas.

The parallel set looks pretty similar to what we’ve seen in the past from his product:

  • Red – /149
  • Orange – /125
  • Blue – /99
  • Silver – /75
  • Turquoise – /50
  • Gold – /25
  • Purple – /17
  • Green – /10
  • Pink – /3
  • Black – 1/1
  • Printing Plates – 1/1

Overall, 2024 Origins Football maintains its artistic identity, but the reliance on inserts and rookies parallels to help carry the value of relatively small checklist may leave some collectors feeling that it doesn’t fully deliver the premium experience they’re looking for.

Investing in sealed boxes of Panini Origins Football

Disclaimer: considering just how many rookie signers are missing from this set, it’s really not a fair comparison looking at this year’s prices compared to the last few years (although 2023 didn’t have CJ Stroud, so that’s probably our best bet).

But we can try. Considering the release price of $375 for 2024 Luminance, let’s at least look at the value of sealed Luminance boxes in recent years (as of  10/16):

  • 2020: $700
  • 2021: $255
  • 2022: $240
  • 2023: $300
  • 2024: $375

The numbers speak for themselves: this is a clear stay away at the release price. The only previous release selling for more than this product is asking for is 2020, and that’s the best rookie class we’ve seen in a long time.

And this year’s washed-out, watered-down product doesn’t have half the rookie autograph potential that the previous year’s do (even though 2023 doesn’t include CJ Stroud autos, either.)

Don’t buy this box anywhere near the $375 mark.

Investing in Panini Origins Football singles

In the case of 2024 Origins, the only cards to consider are the rookie cards. If you can find a rookie parallel at a decent price (perhaps buy raw and get it graded?), that will be as good as you can get when it comes to a long-term hold.

Other than that, though, I’m out on Origins… and probably most of the Panini football products to follow.

In conclusion: Should you rip, hold rip or pass 2024 Panini Football Origins?

So, is 2024 Origins Football worth your investment? No, especially not at the price it’s asking at release.

While the Caleb Williams rookies will be fun, there’s nothing in this box to justify the asking price. If you want Origins exposure, singles are the way to go.
