Panini Black Football is usually one of the first “high-end releases” of the season – a one-pack box for a premium price. This year’s is no different, but the lineup of rookie signers is pretty light for the price.

An introduction to 2024 Black Football

The 2024 Panini Black Football release, which is scheduled for December 11th, combines sleek designs with a comprehensive lineup of star-studded content. Its 242-card base set includes an array of highly sought-after parallels, along with a selection of short-printed case-chase cards.

This year’s product features autographed memorabilia cards that showcase both the NFL’s newest rookies and its established stars. Highlights include the signature Rookie Patch Autographs, the quad-autograph Capstones, and the atmospheric Midnight Signatures.

2024 Black Football also delivers the popular Spotlight Signatures in both horizontal and vertical formats, alongside an assortment of standout autograph-memorabilia combinations. With its compelling mix of rookie talent and seasoned NFL icons, this release aims to appeal to collectors seeking a diverse and visually striking addition to their portfolios.

A few red flags with Black 2024

This is a segment I’ve added to every 2024 release thus far because it can’t be overlooked. 

Before buying, note that many of the top 2024 draft picks are working exclusively with Fanatics on autographs: Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, AD Mitchell, Malik Nabers, Brendan Rice, Jayden Daniels, Brian Thomas Jr., Xavier Worthy, and Rome Odunze, to name a few.

These athletes agreed to no more autos with Panini, but they could still have some in this set.

This is particularly concerning for a product like Black where the Rookie Patch Autos are the biggest chase cards. With glaring holes in the autograph checklist, Black is a risky but at best.

Further unpacking 2024 Black Football Set 

Black is a good-looking product – it really is. With a clean, minimal design, this is one of few products that Panini will tell you is attractive and I’ll agree.

But that’s not enough to make it valuable. Here’s a bit more to know.

Parallels also appear at a rate of one per box, adding to the set’s allure. Rookie-focused content includes dual-swatch Rookie Signature Materials and the jumbo Sizeable Signatures Rookie Jersey cards. Capstones make their return, combining four memorabilia swatches with an autograph.

Collectors seeking eye-catching designs will find options like Spotlight Signatures and Midnight Signatures particularly appealing.

While standard inserts are part of the set, they remain difficult to pull. Smokescreen and Vanta are two short-printed chase inserts that add to the product’s exclusivity.

Value of 2024 Panini Black Football

Let’s look at investing in Panini Black Football 2024 as a potential investment, both sealed and singles.

Here’s the value of the last few year’s based on recent sales (as of 12/9/24)

2020 is the first year of Black and also the most expensive, but that value is propped up by Hurts, Burrow, Allen, Love and Tua rookies. 

For 2024, this year’s washed-out, watered-down product doesn’t have half the rookie autograph potential that the previous year’s do (even though 2023 doesn’t include CJ Stroud autos, either). So if you want to make money long-term with this product as a hold, don’t buy this box anywhere near the $325 mark. 

Investing in Panini Black Football singles

In the case of 2024 Black, there is only one card I’m potentially buying: licensed rookie autograph cards of players are actually included in the set.

Black has nice RPAs, so if you believe in somebody like McCarthy, Penix or another rookie on the checklist, it wouldn’t be a bad buy.

Bottom line: Should you rip, hold or pass on Panini Black?

Black isn’t the most attractive investment, but they are attractive cards if you get the right RPA at the right price.
