August has a good mix of sports card releases that collectors should keep an eye on.
As always, here are the CardLines picks for cards to watch in August 2024. And, also as always, a feature on this list doesn’t mean it’s a must-buy. We’re sharing honest thoughts on all products.
Please note: the release schedules are very fluid and move frequently. These dates are not guaranteed (and with so many releases tentatively scheduled for August, it’s a safe bet many will not release this month).
The 2023/24 Panini Impeccable Soccer Hobby Box offers a high-end collecting experience with some of the most upscale designs and elements in the card world.
Each $1,200 box contains one pack with eight cards, including four autographs, one additional autograph or memorabilia card, one insert, one parallel, and one base card.
Collectors can find stunning features like the metal Stainless Stars and cards incorporating authentic gold and silver.
The set includes indelible ink from some of the Premier League’s hottest stars and greatest legends in inserts such as Canvas Creations,
Impeccable Club History Autographs, and Immortal Ink. With a star-studded checklist that magnificently melds autographs and memorabilia, this collection is perfect for serious soccer card enthusiasts.
The 2024 Panini WWE Prizm set returns with a dynamic release for the WWE Universe, featuring 12 packs per box and 12 cards per pack. Each box, on average, includes 2 autographs, 22 parallels, and 12 inserts.
Collectors can find Hobby-exclusive Prizm parallels, including the highly coveted Prizm Black numbered to 1. The set also offers dual signed cards showcasing superstars from some of the most intense rivalries in WWE history.
The always-popular Color Blast insert makes a comeback, promising to be a standout feature. Each box contains 2 autographs, 22 Prizms, and 12 inserts, making it a must-have for WWE fans.
The 2024 SPx Hockey set delivers a premium collection for hockey enthusiasts, featuring a 200-card base set with 100-star veterans and 100 rookies, all numbered to 299. Each box contains one pack with five cards, including one autograph and four memorabilia and/or tech cards.
The set boasts deep and chase-worthy parallels, including the SPx Signature Fabrics set, which features autographs and game-worn jersey swatches from top players.
Returning inserts include the Radiance FX tech insert, a 100-card set numbered to 949, and the legendary SPx Force insert, each featuring four players, often current teammates.
Additionally, collectors can find coveted UD Black Obsidian, UD Black Lustrous, and UD Black Pride of a Nation inserts, making this set a must-have for serious collectors.
Topps Finest is the grandfather of the refractor and prizm card, so it’s no surprise that this year’s line-up features an array of awesome colors and refractor technology.
Each $279.99 hobby box promises 10 packs of 6 cards, with 2 chrome autographs included, plus 2 Base Card Refractors, 2 Base Card Rares, 5 Base Card Checkerboard Refractors, and 5 Additional Base Card Parallels.
We don’t have a great deal of info about the set yet from Topps, but we know there are 100 base cards and 25 extended base cards, plus Base Set Rookie Design Variations (I think those are separate from the extended base cards, but the product copy is pretty confusing).
True to form, there will be seventeen colors of parallels to chase, including the base refractor.
Immaculate Soccer is one of the most high-end soccer releases every year. Each $1100 box includes 5 autographs or memorabilia cards plus 2 base cards per 7-card box.
With the 2023/24 set, the big money will be found in autographs. Per Panini, The international collecting juggernaut that is Immaculate Soccer returns once again this season with the brand’s upscale aesthetic that delivers on a 275-card base set, the spectacular Immaculate Images subset and the Immaculate Autographs signature insert.”
This product also includes a lot of booklet cards, which are just as exciting as mowing your yard. Still, very solid soccer product – perhaps the best. Just a very expensive rip for a 7-card box.
2023 Panini Contenders Optic Football hits shelves on August 14th at a presale price of $550 for a hobby box of $33 for a blaster. Collectors can also get the release in mega box, fat pack and cello pack.
As always, there are a lot of autos in the release, which is one of the main highlights of Panini Contenders Optic Football, not to mention a healthy array of ticket parallels.
Contenders Opics Football is probably a pass as the high prices for the boxes are difficult to justify, especially for a 2023 product released in August 2024.
Panini’s 2023-24 Impeccable Basketball release features premium cards with on-card autographs, multi-relic cards, and precious metal inserts. Notable inclusions are the Rookie Metal cards and Silver or Gold NBA Logo cards.
Each box guarantees at least five autographs, making it a highly sought-after set for collectors seeking high-end, limited-edition basketball memorabilia.
The 2023-24 Panini Impeccable Basketball release offers substantial value for collectors due to its premium features like on-card autographs and precious metal inserts. The guaranteed autographs and high-quality memorabilia cards cater to serious collectors and investors, potentially offering high returns on investment, especially with rookie cards.
However, its high price point may not be justified for casual collectors. For those seeking rare and exclusive basketball cards, however, this release is a worthy investment.
Select is usually a late-season release, but the fact that it’s coming out closer to the 2024 season than the 2023 season is exhausting.
That said, the boxes are pre-selling for $1,000 and contain 2 autographs, 1 memorabilia, 15 prizms, and each case has 1 Zebra parallel if you’re feeling fortunate. You can also pull cards like Starcade, Color Wheel, Select Anniversary, and more.
Select, as usual, has three tiers of scarcity: concourse, premier and field level. This means several different rookie cards of all the top players to chase.
Mosaic features a simple checklist but is sought by many. Ordering at $500/box, this year’s set features 1 autograph, 20 prizms and 20 inserts per box.
The autograph and inserts checklist are simple, but there is often beauty in that. Autographs sets include Autographs Mosaic, Rookie Autographs Mosaic, Pictographs Mosaic, Collage Autographs Mosaic, and the new Showtime Signatures. The set also introduces new Base Sets such as Base NBA Debut, Base City Edition, and Base NBA Greats.
Hobby Boxes feature insert sets like Storm Chasers, Overdrive, Razzle Dazzle, and new additions Heat Check and In-Season Tournament, along with SSP inserts Stained Glass and the new Micro Mosaic insert.
