Who is Colton Cowser?

Colton Cowser was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles with the 5th selection in the 1st round of the 2021 MLB Amateur Draft.

After putting up a strong .298/.420/.489 line across 258 minor league games across 5 levels over the next three seasons, he made his major league debut in July of 2023. He struggled in 26 games that season but showed flashes of promise that made him another top prospect in the Orioles system that seemed destined to be a long-term contributor to the O’s success.

Coming out of spring training 2024, the Orioles announced that Cowser would make the Opening Day roster. The 24-year-old rewarded this vote of confidence with a strong rookie campaign.

In 153 games, Cowser put up a line of .242/.321/.447, for an OPS of .768 and 123 OPS+. He smacked 24 home runs and added 24 doubles and played impressive defense in left field.

For the season, he was worth a solid 3.1 WAR and was named a finalist for the American League Rookie of the Year. His performance helped lead the Orioles to the playoffs, where lost to the Royals in the Wild Card series.

While that early playoff exit was disappointing, the Orioles look primed to contend for years to come, with Cowser one of the young starts leading the way. (along with Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson).

Cowser is not a perfect player, appearing on various pre-season top prospect lists in the 20th to 50th spots.

He also has significant swing and misses in his game, with his 172 strikeouts in 2024 ranking 5th in the AL. Strikeouts are an area he may improve as he gets more reps, and if not, strikeouts are an accepted thing in today’s game.

Despite just wrapping up his rookie season, Colton Cowser has appeared on 2,847 cards during his career, including a number before he was even drafted. The coveted 1st Bowman cards appear in 2021, the year he was drafted, with his official rookie cards arriving in 2024.

The Best Colton Cowser Rookie Cards

Colton Cowser’s 1st Bowman Cards

Cowser gets his 1st Bowman cards in 2021 Bowman products. The overriding theme is very reasonable PSA total populations and surprisingly reasonable prices for a player who is a rookie of the year finalist.

The paper 1st Bowman card, the 2021 Bowman Draft Colton Cowser #BD-166, has a total PSA pop of just over 150 cards, with the majority of them being in PSA 10 holders. These sell for only $10-30, not much over the cost of grading. If you want a quick and cheap Cowser card, this is a great option.

The higher-end chromium version, the 2021 Bowman Draft Chrome Colton Cowser #BDC-166a, offers up a higher total PSA population but a lower percentage of PSA 10’s. It also has a very reasonable price point of $20-40 in a PSA 10 slab. A Short Print (SP) Variation version is also available and is a much tougherstricter chase.

The 2021 Bowman Draft Sapphire Edition Colton Cowser #BDC-166 has an even higher total PSA population, with a gem rate of under 45%. With recent comps in the $35-60 range, this is another reasonably-priced, relatively low-pop Cowser 1st Bowman option.

The 1st Bowman autograph is always among a player’s most desirable cards, and the 2021 Bowman Draft Chrome Draft Pick Autographs Colton Cowser #CDA-CC is no exception.

It has the highest total PSA population on the list, although it’s far from too high. The price point between $135 and $170 seems reasonable for a player in Cowser’s position.

Colton Cowser’s rookie cards

Colton Cowser had his true rookie cards in 2024, matching up with his first full year in the big leagues. PSA population points are generally low, although some of the products weren’t released that long ago so the total population numbers will likely continue to grow.

The 2024 Topps Colton Cowser #257 and 2024 Topps Chrome Colton Cowser #278 are two great-looking Cowser rookie cards that can be had for less than the price of a retail blaster, even in a PSA 10 slab. The 2024 Bowman Chrome Colton Cowser #33 has a total PSA population of only 8 but is readily available raw.

If you’re looking for an autographed Cowser card that gives a good alternative to the 2021 1st Bowman, the 2024 Bowman Chrome Rookies Autographs Colton Cowser #CRA-CC is a good option. The one recent sale of a PSA 10 was for only $55.

Cowser has many other rookie cards in 2024, including products like Finest, Stadium Club, Topps 206, Allen & Ginter, Topps Heritage, Chrome Logofractor, Chrome Sapphire, and more.

Other early career Colton Cowser cards of note

Thanks to his playing for the Team USA Collegiate National Team, Cowser appears on several cards that predate his professional drafting and debut.

These include cards in sets such as 2019 Panini Elite Extra Edition and 2019 Panini Prizm Draft Picks. This continued in 2020 with appearances in 2020 Donruss American Pride and 2020 Panini Stars & Stripes USA Baseball. All of these cards have parallel, relic, and autographed versions.

All but the rarer parallels and autos are small money investments, with somewhat limited appeal. Still, if you like Team USA cards or are a big Cowser fan, these are worth a look.

Colton Cowser also appears on close to 1,000 cards across 2022 and 2023. These fall into that stretch between a player’s 1st Bowman and true rookie card and tend to have less demand and value than those other cards.

That does not mean they’re not worth chasing, however, as there is a nice mix of Chrome, insert, parallel, and autograph cards. They’re worth pursuing if you’re a big fan of Cowser.
