July has a good mix of sports card releases that collectors should keep an eye on.
As always, here are the CardLines picks for cards to watch in July 2024. And, also as always, a feature on this list doesn’t mean it’s a must-buy. We’re sharing honest thoughts on all products.
Please note: the release schedules are very fluid and move frequently. These dates are not guaranteed (and with so many releases tentatively scheduled for July, it’s a safe bet many will not release this month).
If you want a high-end hobby box that won’t break the bank, Topps Tier One baseball might be the perfect product for you. It’s a popular mid-season release, coming in the hobby-only format. Each $300 hobby box contains three cards, delivering 2 autographs and 1 relic card.
With a mix of rookies, stars and retired legends, collectors can hunt for over 15 new autograph parallels, 5 new foil colors, 4 new relic inserts, new cut signatures and cut signatures relics all culminating in a fresh look on a classic brand.
The 2023/24 Panini Select Premier League Soccer set offers collectors a dynamic series, featuring top talent from England’s Premier League.
Each $299 box includes 60 cards with 3 hits and several parallels and inserts. This collection includes a comprehensive base set with prominent players from all 20 teams and a variety of parallels such as Silver, Blue (#/199), Purple (#/75), Orange (#/25), Gold (#/10), and the ultra-rare Black (#/1).
Key inserts like “Unstoppable” and “Equalizers” highlight standout performers and game-changers, respectively. Autograph cards feature signatures from top players, while memorabilia cards include pieces of player-worn jerseys.
With soccer an ongoing focus for Panini, loyalists of Select and Prizm could consider this product.
Panini Contenders Football is an autograph-driven product, which sets it back when the top rookie signers aren’t signing for Panini. Still, it’s kept the same format for 20 years, carrying value not by rookies or parallels, but by the Rookie Ticket Autographs.
Hobby boxes are selling for $550 and, as usual, have 5 autographs per box, one of which is on-card. You can also expect to pull 1 parallel per box. See what I mean about autograph-driven?
Opening Contenders and making your money back is nearly miraculous, but the nicest rookie autographs age well. The best approach is not to open this box, but to buy autograph singles of your favorite prospect.
I don’t usually feature unlicensed cards in this section, but the first half of the month is pretty slim pickings.
So, that said, the 2024 Donruss Baseball set marks its return with a diverse lineup featuring young stars, Hall of Fame legends, and iconic figures of the sport.
Pre-ordering at $150/box, collectors can find a variety of striking inserts such as Milestones, Bomb Squad, and Unleashed. The set also offers exclusive opti-chrome parallels in the Base Rated Prospects Optic, with unique variations like blue velocity, gold velocity, and black finite parallels.
You can expect to pull 3 autographs or memorabilia cards, 48 base Rated Rookies/Prospects, and 24 optic cards per box. Autograph sets include Signature Series and Retro 1984 Materials.
Each box promises an average of three autographs or memorabilia cards, adding significant value for collectors.
The 2024 Topps Chrome Baseball set offers collectors a sleek and high-quality series, showcasing the top talent in Major League Baseball. As always, this product comes in both hobby and jumbo form.
Hobby boxes are selling for $210 pre-order and include 96 cards with 1 auto, while $520 Jumbo boxes include 156 cards and 3 autographs. As always, this collection features an all-new lineup of the hottest rookies, parallel inserts, and beautiful chrome parallels.
Collectors can build the entire 300-card base set across a rainbow of color and tech parallels. This is a hobby stable for all baseball enthusiasts.
Contenders Basketball is an autograph-driven product, and without Wemby autos, it’s a product I can’t recommend investing in. It’s kept the same format for 20 years, carrying value not by rookies or parallels, but by the Rookie Ticket Autographs.
Hobby boxes are selling for $425 and, as usual, have 2 autographs per box with one being on-card. You can also expect to pull 12 inserts, parallels, or variations per box, but no guaranteed rookies. See what I mean about being autograph-driven?
Opening Contenders and making your money back is nearly miraculous, but the nicest rookie autographs age well. Still, without the nicest rookie, 2023-24 Contenders is a bad buy.
After several delays, Optic Football is finally ready to hit shelves. It’s the chromium version of Donruss football and this year’s box is pre-ordering for about $850.
Apart from the price, though, most of the description above remains the same: 20 packs of 4 cards, 1 auto, 12 parallels (9 are numbered), etc. While the lack of Stroud autos hurts, this is still a great product — one we considered a Top 10 football product to invest in.
While this year’s product doesn’t advertise anything new, a lot of classics return, from the Downtown insert to parallels such as Flex, Electricity, Jazz, Black Pandora and more.
2023-24 Panini Mosaic Football features a simple checklist but is sought by many. Ordering at $500/box, this year’s set features 1 autograph, 20 prizms and 20 inserts per box. The autograph and inserts checklist are simple, but there is often beauty in that.
Autograph sets include Autographs Mosaic, Rookie Autographs Mosaic, Pictographs Mosaic, Collage Autographs Mosaic, and the new Showtime Signatures. The set also introduces new Base Sets such as Base NBA Debut, Base City Edition, and Base NBA Greats.
Hobby Boxes feature insert sets like Storm Chasers, Overdrive, Razzle Dazzle, and new additions Heat Check and In-Season Tournament, along with SSP inserts Stained Glass and the new Micro Mosaic insert.
The 2024 SPx Hockey set delivers a premium collection for hockey enthusiasts, featuring a 200-card base set with 100-star veterans and 100 rookies, all numbered to 299. Each box contains one pack with five cards, including one autograph and four memorabilia and/or tech cards.
The set boasts deep and chase-worthy parallels, including the SPx Signature Fabrics set, which features autographs and game-worn jersey swatches from top players.
Returning inserts include the Radiance FX tech insert, a 100-card set numbered to 949, and the legendary SPx Force insert, each featuring four players, often current teammates.
Additionally, collectors can find coveted UD Black Obsidian, UD Black Lustrous, and UD Black Pride of Nation inserts, making this set a must-have for serious collectors.
The 2023/24 Panini Impeccable Soccer Hobby Box offers a high-end collecting experience with some of the most upscale designs and elements in the card collecting world.
Each $1,200 box contains one pack with eight cards, including four autographs, one additional autograph or memorabilia card, one insert, one parallel, and one base card. Collectors can find stunning features like the metal Stainless Stars and cards incorporating authentic gold and silver.
The set includes indelible ink from some of the Premier League’s hottest stars and greatest legends in inserts such as Canvas Creations, Impeccable Club History Autographs, and Immortal Ink.
With a star-studded checklist that magnificently melds autographs and memorabilia, this collection is perfect for serious soccer card enthusiasts.
