Noteworthy Sports Card Releases In December 2024

December is a slower month for cards. There are a decent number of releases, but there are none that collectors should feel like they must get in on. Most are mid-level brands, not top-tier products (save maybe the very first release on our list.)

As always, here are the CardLines picks for cards to watch in December 2024. And, also as always, a feature on this list doesn’t mean it’s a must-buy. We’re sharing honest thoughts on all products.

Please note: the release schedules are very fluid and move frequently. These dates are not guaranteed (and with so many releases tentatively scheduled for December, it’s a safe bet many of these will not be released this month).

The biggest sports card releases for December 2024

2024 Bowman Draft Baseball (12/04)

This release focuses on MLB’s newest draftees, offering collectors a chance to obtain first Bowman cards of emerging talent. The set is known for its prospect autographs and parallels, making it a staple for baseball card enthusiasts.

Bowman Draft Baseball is available in both Jumbo ($599) and Super Jumbo formats ($999). But don’t worry—if you want an extra layer of confusion, you can also get the HTA Jumbo box ($799).

While there are enough formats that we won’t unpack them all in this preview, be sure to read our full Bowman Draft review and remember this: Bowman Draft 2024 has enough prospects with bright futures that, no matter what format it comes in, it’s going to be a hot release.

2024 Panini Prizm Baseball (12/06)

While Prizm MLB is not licensed, it is at least Prizm, so it will still appeal to some collectors. 2024 Prizm Baseball costs $140 and comes in 12 packs of 12 cards, with a deep rainbow of colors to reflect the 300-card set.

You can expect 3 autographs, 22 base prizms and 12 inserts in every box. Autograph sets include Prospect Signatures, Legendary Signatures, and Throwback Signatures, and these boxes also have the Color Blast SSP for collectors to chase.

Panini notes that low-numbered parallels include Green Scope, Orange Wave, and the Ultra-Rare Gold Vinyl.

2024 Panini Black Football (12/11)

Releasing at just $299, 2024 Black Football stands out in the hobby as a unique product, offering sleek designs and premium content in a streamlined configuration.

Each box contains just five cards, including one Rookie Patch Autograph, one additional autograph, one memorabilia card, one base card, and one parallel. Despite its minimal card count, Black remains an affordable option for collectors seeking high-end hits without breaking the bank.

This year’s set includes Rookie Patch Autographs, Capstones, and Midnight Signatures, although most of the top rookies will be missing from the autograph checklist.. Black also continues to deliver fan-favorite Spotlight Signatures, available in both horizontal and vertical formats because one version simply isn’t enough (please detect my sarcasm, thanks).

2023-24 Panini National Treasures Basketball (12/11)

There’s no release price at the time of writing, but 2023-24 National Treasures remains one of the most highly anticipated releases in the basketball card market, known for its premium design and content.

Each box contains one pack of 10 cards, including four autographs, four memorabilia cards, one printing plate, and one base card. The product focuses on delivering high-value hits, making it a consistent favorite among collectors chasing rookies, stars, and legends.

This year’s release introduces several new autograph sets, such as All-NBA Signatures, Viewpoint Signatures, and Treasured Talents Signatures, alongside classics like Rookie Patch Autographs and Logoman Autographs.

Memorabilia collectors can look forward to prime and super-prime swatches, with highlights including Team Logos, Logomans, and new sets like Rookie Patches 2009 and Highly Treasured.

National Treasures also debuts innovative new designs, including Rookie Jumbo Jersey Number Booklet Autographs and the Rookie First Edition Signatures Booklet. Additionally, the all-new Treasured Metals inserts—available in Silver, Gold, and Platinum and numbered 25 or less—offer an extra layer of appeal for high-end collectors.

That said, 2023-24 National Treasures will not have any Victor Wembanyama autographs (like every other Panini Product), which is a big chink in the popular product’s armor.

2024 Topps Definitive Baseball (12/11)

Topps Definitive Baseball is intended to deliver the quintessential high-end experience for collectors. Each box contains just eight cards, including six autographs or autograph relic cards and two relic cards, all showcasing premium designs and top-tier players.

Known for its emphasis on quality, Definitive features on-card autographs and oversized uniform patches, along with unique memorabilia pieces. The product highlights leading names in baseball, combining star power with intricate craftsmanship to appeal to collectors who value exclusivity.

As one of the flagship luxury releases of the year, 2024 Topps Definitive Baseball continues to stand out for its mix of stunning designs and high-value hits, making it a focal point for enthusiasts at the start of the season.

2023/24 Panini Immaculate Soccer (12/13)

The 2023/24 Panini Immaculate Soccer Hobby Box offers a high-end collecting experience with some of the most upscale designs and elements in the card world.

Each $1,000 box contains one pack with eight cards, including four autographs, one additional autograph or memorabilia card, one insert, one parallel, and one base card.

Collectors can find features like the metal Stainless Stars and cards incorporating authentic gold and silver.

The set includes indelible ink from some of the Premier League’s hottest stars and greatest legends in inserts such as Canvas Creations.

2024 Topps Triple Threads Baseball (12/19)

We have nothing from Topps on this product as of 11/22, but here’s what we know based on rumors around this release.

Topps Triple Threads Baseball will return in 2024 with a more traditional base set approach, now featuring 200 cards. This expanded base set integrates rookies, top stars, and retired greats, creating a diverse checklist that balances baseball’s past, present, and future.

Autographs and relics remain the cornerstone of Triple Threads, with some of the largest checklist sections devoted to Triple Threads Relics and Triple Threads Autograph Relics.

While many players appear multiple times within these subsets, this approach offers various cards to chase and keeps print runs for individual cards lower—a hallmark of the Triple Threads brand.

Multi-signature cards like Triple Threads Autograph Relic Combos and Common Threads Triple-Player Autograph Relics are back, providing collectors with opportunities to pull cards featuring memorabilia and signatures from multiple players.

In 2024, Triple Threads goes beyond the traditional uniform and bat relics, incorporating unique patches such as letters, logos, and special pieces from All-Star gear. This variety ensures collectors will find an impressive range of memorabilia in the product, further solidifying its place as a fan favorite.

2024 Panini Prizm Racing (NASCAR) (12/20)

Prizm has never sunk its hooks into racing like it has in the NBA and NFL, but this is a licensed Prizm Product. At the time of writing, hobby boxes from years past range from $125 to $174. Still, it’s a nice product for an ever-growing sport, especially in the sports collectibles space.

2022 Prizm Racing comes with 12 packs of 12 cards, including 3 autographs (down from 4 last year) and various colored inserts and parallels. Are you ready to rip some affordable Prizm? You can pre-order yours for $135 today.

2024 Panini Rookies & Stars Football (12/20)

The 2024 Rookies & Stars Football set delivers a compelling mix of cards with six packs per box, each containing 10 cards. This 200-card base set combines a vibrant selection of both rookies and veteran players, offering a design that honors the product’s history while embracing the future, and boxes are pre-selling for $299.

Popular inserts like Crusade, Thrillers, and Stellar Rookies are featured, with the added excitement of autograph parallels. Collectors can anticipate finding two autographs, two memorabilia cards, five numbered base or rookie cards, 12 inserts or insert parallels, 12 rookie cards, and six Optichrome inserts or insert parallels in each box.

2023/24 Panini One & One Basketball (12/20)

Set to release on December 20, 2024, Panini One-and-One Basketball offers a high-risk, high-reward experience that has sparked mixed reactions among collectors. Each box contains just two cards—one autograph and one base, parallel, or insert—sealed in individual one-touch cases.

Priced at $1,100 per box, the product relies heavily on the appeal of potential big hits, leaving many collectors with less-than-stellar returns if they don’t land a marquee card.

The 2024 edition includes Rookie Patch Autographs featuring on-card signatures from some of the NBA’s top rookies. However, it’s worth noting that Victor Wembanyama autographs are absent from the checklist—a significant drawback for those chasing the year’s biggest name.

Veteran and legend autographs are also part of the lineup, highlighted by Timeless Moments Autographs and the new Timeless Moments Dual Autographs, which commemorate iconic moments in NBA history.

Beyond the autographs, the product features the Downtown insert, one of Panini’s most popular design.

While One-and-One offers a sleek presentation and some chase-worthy cards, its limited configuration and high price point make it a gamble. Collectors should weigh the risks before diving into this polarizing release.
