Origins Basketball has a familiar and appealing focus on the rookie of the class. It addressed their contribution with a series of ethereal and space-focused designs.
Traditionally, it comes early in the season, though lately (like with so many other releases), that has been a problem. This year, it will provide one of the earlier avenues for getting your hands on a proper Victor Wembanyama rookie card.
That will undoubtedly increase its appeal. But how does the release fare overall? Read the 2023-24 Panini Origins Basketball review to find out.

The first release of a Panini Origins product was 2016 Panini Origins Football. The concept behind it was simple. Panini wanted a release that was similar to Topps Inception Football.
That Topps product hadn’t been around for long. It debuted in 2011 but had attracted a strong following. It started as a colorful release with many patches and increasingly took on a space and psychedelic theme.
The term origin refers to the beginning of things. And that seems to be the idea linking the checklist with the design. It is heavy on rookies because that is where players have their origin. Then, it also focuses thematically on the origins of the universe. I dunno.
Ultimately, they took the idea from Inception, which also signifies the start of something. It is also the name of an overrated movie.
Origins was the Panini take on that concept. The artwork changed somewhat and became less abstract. In addition, the patches got smaller and less frequent. However, Panini put more of an emphasis on autographs. That has allowed the brand to maintain its popularity over the years.
2018-19, Panini launched a pilot of autographed Panini Origins basketball cards in the 2018-19 Panini Chronicles Basketball, which they often use as a testing ground for new and exciting (or sometimes not so exciting) potential new products.
The rookie signatures in that release were a hit, and the following year, we finally got a standalone Panini Origins Basketball product.
The 2019-20 Panini Origins Basketball Hobby Box featured seven cards per box. The hits were one rookie jersey autograph and an additional impact, leaving a few base cards in each package.
The designs in that inaugural release were stunning. That went a long way towards establishing a nice for it in the annual Panini calendar.
The main Hobby Box will drop on April 3, 2024. Meanwhile, the H2 box (with fewer hits at a lower price) will arrive on April 12, 2024 and is one of the notable releases of the month.
As we have noted, this was once an early-season release. Therefore, its arrival well after the All-Star break is a questionable decision. It is true that last year, things were a bit worse.
The release came on March 22, 2023. However, that is not a very significant difference. Back in 2020-21, the dates were actually worse, and it came out in April.
Indeed, the last time this release was genuinely early season as it is billed was for the 2019-20 Panini Origins Basketball release, which arrived on December 18, 2019.
Why is this a problem? Well, it bodes badly for the attention and value of the cards. Origins are a great teaser for when the bigger cards are yet to come.
But with 2023-24 Panini Prizm Basketball releasing on February 21, 2024, a good two weeks earlier, it will be completely overshadowed. 2023-24 Donruss Basketball and Hoops are also already out.

The product is a hobby-only release, as always. In 2023-24, the formats appear to be limited to a regular Hobby Box and an H2 one.
In previous years, there was also a 1st Off The Line version. However, there is no information on one for this year.

The card designs are the most notable and consistent advantage of Panini Origins Basketball. A lot of releases have nice inserts or patch cards.
But one thing that sets this release apart was the beautiful care and detail of even the lowliest base card. That is the kind of design investment we would love to see in every product.

But especially those that have very few cards in each box. It’s particularly important to make every single card enjoyable for those releases. While most don’t, Origins delivers.
Panini has also improved the hits. Traditionally, a Panini Origins Basketball box has two hits. They would be either a relic or an auto card. However, people sometimes pulled two memorabilia cards, which would suck.
Especially since, in this release, they are not necessarily even linked with the player on the card. More on that later. However, now you are guaranteed that one will be an auto. That is a significant improvement.
However, fans were getting tired of the same old space-themed backgrounds year after year. So, the 2022-23 Panini Origins Basketball brought in a bunch of animal-themed prints and concepts.
I thought it was pretty cringe, but some people loved the change. However, in 2023-24, Origins Basketball returned to its roots. I am into it, but you may disagree.
Most of the autos are on card, which is lovely. Between the creative designs of Panini Origins Basketball and the on-card autos, the signatures in this release can be among the most attractive available. Sadly, this does not apply equally to RPAs. More on that in the cons section.
We have been hearing that there will be no Wemby, Brandon Miller, or Scoot Henderson autos in this year’s release.
That seems to be confirmed by the preview cards and the box, which highlight other rookies. Most notably, Keyonte George (who is on the cover of the box) and Ausar Thompson.
If this is true, the lack of autos from the biggest name (and some of his closest competitors) is a severe blow to the value and desirability of this product.
The patches in the Origins release have long been a sore point for collectors. They have the following disclaimer: the swatch included in the patches is “not associated with any specific player, game, or event.”
Uh, ok. So it’s just a piece of a mass-produced jersey, then? Cool.
The folks at Blowout Forums are not impressed by this. One user said, “Yes, that’s the worst cop-out I think I’ve seen and really ruins the desire, collectability, legitimacy, etc., of real Jersey/Patch cards.
I mean, come on, we all know most rookie stuff was mainly player/event worn, but that’s 10x better than some random jersey taken off the rack at Target or Scheel’s.” Another added, “It’s a destroyed base card.”
That also explains why Origins is relatively generous with RPAs. The ones they make are not that expensive to produce, and because they also aren’t completely legit, they don’t have the best market value.
Then add to this the sad fact that these RPAs are also sticker autos. That means the hits in this box just aren’t that great. More on that in the value section.
The full 2023-24 Panini Origins Basketball checklist isn’t out yet. However, the product usually has a base set of 100, of which about half are rookies.
As I mentioned, the base set here is one of the most attractive in the hobby. It looks like this year will be no exception.

Of course, the 2023-24 rookie class is headlined by the fantastic Victor Wembanyama.
With a stat line of 20.4 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game, he is becoming everything scouts said he would be. But unfortunately, his auto is not included in this release.
Brandon Miller is probably the second most promising player in this cohort. But again, the three-point shot machine appears to be absent from the signature list for 2023-24 Panini Origins Basketball.
Are we really that bullish on guys like Keyonte George, who is headlining this release for some reason? The Jazz guard has great all-around skills. But does not project to be a superstar.
The Thompson twins also look set to be valuable players but not major stars. I am pretty unenthusiastic with the rookie autos in this release.
The release has a selection of inserts, including new and returning varieties. If you like them, you may prefer the H2 box, which includes six per box.
Meanwhile, the hobby box only allows you to land one. However, the lowest print varieties, the Cosmic Storm and Tiger Eyes ones, are hobby exclusives. With only one per box, they would be pretty hard to get.
Origins may have disadvantages, but design quality is not one of them. The Dawn inserts are nothing short of stunning.
The picture players with a full sunrise background. At their best, these inserts are jaw-droppingly beautiful. Some of the best Panini has to offer. Unfortunately, the value does not match the aesthetics.
Non-numbered versions are worth almost nothing. Meanwhile, the /10 versions of top rookies usually go for around $50. However, the gorgeous Chet Holmgren from the 2022-23 release sold for $200.
The Roots of Greatness insert is one of those dual inserts focusing on the main stars of NBA teams. The front of the card shows a duo, almost always the two best-known players on the team.
On the back, Panini briefly summarizes their contribution with some stats or maybe a quote. The result is very attractive.
The low-numbered versions can go for around $150 or so. But they are more aesthetically pleasing than valuable.
These inserts are brand new and come as hobby box exclusives. They are exactly what you would expect a Panini Origins insert called Cosmic Storm to look like.
As in all Origins inserts, they look great. But the design and concept don’t bring anything new or compelling to the table.
The 2022-23 release was very much animal-themed. One of the best-loved items along these lines was the Tiger Eyes SSP case hit.
The theme is that basketball stars are doing their thing while a tiger stares on menacingly. If you like that, you are lucky because Tiger Eyes is back.
The cards had some value, though not as much as you would like from a case hit. For example, an Anthony Edwards raw Tiger Eyes recently sold for $449.
The Snake Eyes is, of course, very similar to the Tiger Eyes insert. The difference is….yeah, you can figure it out.
Of course, it also sounds cool because snake eyes is a familiar gambling term. These cards look good. But the best thing about them is that though they are H2 box exclusives and not hobbies, they enjoy similar value to their Tiger Eyes hobby equivalents.
That means you have more of a chance to get one at a lower investment. A definite advantage of the H2 format here.
It would be impossible to have a space-themed release called Origins without a Big Bang-inspired insert.
That would be a form of malpractice. In this case (pardon the pun), it is a case hit SSP, which makes sense for a dramatic and apt theme. Of course, the problem with the design is that every card in this release looks like an illustration of the Big Bang. Therefore, it’s hard to see this insert as a standout.
The design from 2022-23 was distinctly more attractive as well. Perhaps for that reason, the value isn’t as significant as one might hope with a case hit. Few sell for over $200.
With an insert named Catapults, you might expect it to feature athletes jumping through the air. Some of these inserts do, but there is no clear design concept for these poorly conceived inserts.
It’s surprising, considering that most of these Origins inserts truly pop. That is undoubtedly part of the reason the value of these cards is strikingly low, verging on non-existent.
Euphoria is defined as “a feeling or state of intense excitement and happiness.” Meanwhile, these inserts feature generic space backgrounds with fantastic lines and clouds of vapor. How are the two related? Dude, I have no idea.
But these are among the more attractive Origins inserts, which is saying something. But the value is pretty limited, even among low-numbered Euphoria insert versions.
Many of these insert names are pretty unimaginative. But I have to take my hats off to Nucleus. In astronomy terms, a nucleus is a comet’s solid and central part.
Meanwhile, the middle of a team are the players that make up its core and are at the center of its success. The Nucleus inserts highlight the three most important players in every team.
They also look great, and as an older man, I got the Bird, Parish, and McHale version that was in the 2022-23 release. Sadly, these beautiful cards do not earn their due, and it is rare to find even a low-numbered one going for over $100.
These inserts are rookie-focused and show players leaping into their professional status. Who knows.
The design was beautiful in 2022-23, featuring players jumping through a vortex. The markup for 2023-24 is far less distinctive but still attractive. Don’t expect any value here, though.
There is some good news regarding 2023-24 Panini Origins Basketball. While many Panini releases this year have suffered from inflated prices, sometimes double or triple what we were used to, Origins has not.
The cost of this release has gone up, but more by general inflation than some attempt to bleed hobby enthusiasts dry.
However, there has long been a belief that Origins does not provide much value for the price.
The box is now selling for $410, and there are some serious doubts over whether enough cards are available in these boxes worth more than that.
However, here at Cardlines, we don’t settle for mere “he said, she said” speculation. Nah, fam. We believe in data. Numbers. Science. Liberty.
Therefore, we will crunch the numbers and tell you what value you can expect from 2023-24 Panini Origins Basketball.
Like many Panini releases, Panini Origins Basketball is a relatively recent invention. It comes from the height of the Zion Williamson and Luka Doncic-inspired basketball card boom.
Therefore, we don’t have many other years to compare it to. Nonetheless, let’s take a look at what all the boxes from previous years are currently selling for.

The first thing that comes to mind when looking at these numbers is their consistency. It is rare to see prices this similar, coming out of the COVID-19 boom era and into the current day.
That shows that this release is less vulnerable to the ups and downs associated with rookie classes than most other releases. In some cases, you can see boxes from 2019-20 going for three or four times the value of the 2022-23 box.
It makes sense when you think about it. No one buys Origins to invest in rookies. There are better cards you can get for that. Especially since the RPAs are somewhat questionable.
Instead, people (myself included) love this product for its outstanding design concept and clearly excellent execution.
So, there will always be a market for these beautiful cards.
Then, another more unfortunate fact becomes apparent. Not a single one of these boxes sells for more than the current presell price of the 2023-24 Panini Origins Basketball Hobby Box.
The highest price one sells is one dollar less than the $409 price of the new one. With no Wemby auto, this one likely will not sell for more than that despite a relatively strong rookie class.
There is no value to be had by stashing away boxes of this product.
The value of the boxes would suggest that these cards are more suitable for admiring than investment. But does that hold for the singles?
Sure, there may be more prestigious releases than this one. However, the Origins release arguably has more beautiful cards than any other release.
Does that raise their single’s value at all? Let’s look at some notable sales over the last three months.
The contrast between how good-looking and enticing these cards are and their actual market values is quite striking. But the numbers tell an obvious story.
Unless you hit a ridiculously good 1/1, even the best cards will not pay back the amount you invested in a 2023-24 Panini Origins Basketball hobby box.
Hobby enthusiasts are many things, but they aren’t stupid. We all know that Panini does not use genuine apparel used by athletes.
That lowers the value of all the patches in the product, which make up a good portion of the hits here. If you are lucky, you can recoup the value of the box.
But it’s very unlikely to do more, even if you have a relatively great box.
We are happy that the 2023-24 Panini Origins Basketball Hobby Box remains close to its traditional price point. While many other releases have ballooned in price, this one has not.
One of the primary reasons is simple. The previous year’s boxes do not resell at a high price. We also saw that the singles are not particularly valuable either. The cost over $400 doesn’t seem like a rip-off at current market values.
There are worse deals out there. But there is certainly no scope for investment in this product.
Does that mean that 2023-24 Panini Origins Basketball is not worth buying? Not even close. Origins has some of the best artwork in the business.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To me, these cards are the peak of visual appeal, and you may disagree. But there is no question that Panini invests more effort in the visuals of this set than most others.
Oscar Wilde once said, “Women are meant to be loved, not understood.” Similarly, these cards are meant to be admired, not sold for a quick buck. Is that a bad thing? Not to me.
