2023-24 Panini Prizm Draft Picks Basketball: Easy pass or hidden gem?
There is no rational reason to buy 2023-24 Panini Prizm Draft Picks Basketball.
There, I said it. This box is scheduled to release on November 3rd, 2023 at $170/box and feels like it has the potential to be worth around $50 in a year.
But in this article, we’ll look at reasons to avoid this product plus some good alternatives to invest in.

If this intro wasn’t clear enough, 2023-24 Prizm Draft Picks basketball is a bad investment.
No amount of Color Blast, Stained Glass or Manga inserts can make up for the fact that this product doesn’t have Wembanyama or Scoot Henderson autograph cards.
The Thompson brothers headline the rookie autographs, but if you’re ripping this box just to find their cards, go buy a Topps Chrome OTE auto of them. Those are licensed, at that.
The best cards in this set are already outdone by Bowman Chrome University basketball, and I’d gravitate there if I’m looking for prospect investing. In fact, here’s a video we recently released about why this product might be a good deal.

Considering buying a box of 2023-24 Prizm Draft Picks? Here’s what you need to know.
Each $170 box includes four packs of 10 cards, and each pack also contains an autograph. In every hobby box, you can expect to unwrap 4 autographs, 4 silvers, 8 parallels and 4 inserts.

To recap:
Prizm Collegiate Draft Picks Basketball brings back a very similar lineup to what we’ve seen in years past. The insert sets include fireworks, Widescreen and Instant Impact, but let’s be real, nobody is buying Prizm for the inserts.
Any money to be found in this box will be autographs, colors and parallels, which might look very familiar to a keen eye.
Base (Hobby) Parallels will look a lot like last year, with approximately a bazillion parallels. Like, so many parallels that even parallels feel less special. This includes:

Collectors will also be on the lookout for Draft Picks Autographs of the best players from the draft, and they have a pretty deep parallel set as well. Look for:
The biggest SPs in the case are the iconic Manga, Stained Glass and Color Blast inserts, and while they bring some big-pull potential to Prizm Draft Picks, we can only hope they return for actual Prizm basketball this year.
2023-24 Prizm Draft Picks hobby boxes are preordering for $170, but how well do they age?
Here’s the big caution with Draft Picks cards: they overdo the rookies. Flooding the market with college jersey card rookies will not help the long-term value of these cards.
Draft Picks cards are still a recent enough invention that it’s impossible to see how they hold up in the long run, but I wouldn’t bank on these as any time of future investment.
If there’s money to be made with Draft Picks cards, it’s almost always in the first couple weeks of release unless the price is right. And, again, this product already was beaten to the market by the Bowman Chrome Competition.
With that said, let’s look at investing possibilities (it’s obligatory).

If you were to buy a box at the current preorder price of $170, you just might be poised to make some money in the long run.
Here are recent selling pricing for the last several years of hobby boxes:
2019-20 is the only one of these selling for more than the $170 asking price for the 2022-23 release, and 2019-20 didn’t have as much “Draft Picks” competition – no Chronicles, Contenders, or anything from the Bowman University family.
2021-22 is much more in line with what I expect the 2022-23 release to look like, but 2021-22 at least had rookie autograph potential of Paolo Banchero, who won the ROY. 2023-24 doesn’t have Wemby or Scoot Henderson.
With that in mind, don’t go near these boxes with a 10-foot pole.
Investing in singles is much more dangerous. Collectors prefer having the players in their professional threads, and as mentioned earlier, Prizm Draft Picks cards flood the market with rookies so their value can’t hold up over time.
The only counter to this market flooding is investing in numbered rookie cards, which have a defined print run and therefore more scarcity, but if you’re looking to spend that kind of money, I’d strongly encourage you to invest in an NBA-licensed version of a rookie card for your favorite athlete.
Draft Picks, as singles, are a very risky investment.
When it comes to 2023-24 Draft Picks, the only way you can call this product a rip is if you get it right at release and want to roll the dice on the cards before the NBA-licensed Prizm cards.
In the end, do what makes the most sense for you and your budget. This is a “hobby,” and while you can make a decent amount of profit off it, hobbies are also about having fun.
