Topps doesn’t have the NBA rights yet. But that hasn’t stopped them from strongly entering the basketball fray. They have so far issued unlicensed professional basketball cards and licensed college ones. But they won’t settle for that.
Topps is now hitting the high-school level with the 2023-24 Topps Chrome McDonald’s All-American Basketball release. But of course, the biggest attraction in this release is the inclusion of cards, for one, of Bronny James, the son of (arguably) the greatest basketball player who ever lived.
But how does it measure up as a release? Check out our 2023-24 Topps Chrome McDonald’s All-American Basketball review to find out.

Topps established the Topps Chrome McDonald’s All-American Basketball release in 2022 as part of their campaign to reestablish themselves in the sport. But this is not the first time the company has issued cards for the top high school players in America.
Almost twenty years ago, Topps released its 2006 Topps McDonald’s All-American basketball card set, covering the best male and female basketball players in the nation at the high school level. It was a 100-card set that included some all-time great young players like Kevin Durant and Chris Paul. However, those cards are not worth all that much.
The set was back in 2007, though it had been reduced to a 48-card checklist. It included legends like James Harden and Derrick Rose.
The designs for these early cards were simple and focused on action cards of promising young players. After the 2009 release, Topps discontinued the release. It had never been particularly popular.

Since then, other card companies have released McDonald’s All-American Basketball cards. But there have been no major releases.
That is until the release of 2022 Topps Chrome McDonald’s All-American Basketball. It was the first chromium release for the high school prospect series and a sign that Topps was taking its return to basketball seriously.
The release had a 100-player long base checklist. The cards were beautiful and proved immensely popular.
The release date for 2023-24 Topps Chrome McDonald’s All-American Basketball boxes was November 1, 2024.
The roster for the 2023 McDonald’s All-American Boys Game was announced in January of this year, and the game was played on March 28, 2023, at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
So, getting the cards out by November of the same year is reasonable, especially if we compare it to the pace of Topps rivals over at Panini.

The release comes in hobby box and blaster box format. So, you will get a chance to pick these up at retail outlets as well.
That is the same configuration of structures as the 2022-23 Topps Chrome McDonald’s All-American Basketball release.

The product offers basketball prospecting nutcases a chance to follow the best talents from the very start of players’ careers. As we all know, the players are selected by a panel of hundreds of experts.
While certainly not infallible, they do an excellent job of choosing the best players. Therefore, the checklist for this product tends to be stronger than in most releases where the company picks them.
The hits are pretty good for the low price. Each box contains two autos, a McDonald’s Logo parallel, and usually more than six Base Card Refractor parallels. It’s a pretty good haul for $160 in basketball terms. Of course, we will discuss the value of these cards in detail below.
The designs for Topps Chrome McDonald’s All-American Basketball are classic and understated. It has that 1990s Topps Chrome Basketball feel that most of us love. Therefore, collectors seem to like what Topps is doing. I certainly do, and I love these designs.
The biggest pro is the inclusion of Bronny James. Hobby enthusiasts were upset to find that the son of “The King” was not included in the previous iteration. But now he is featured as the main attraction in the release.
One thing that concerns some collectors (not me, of course!) is that many of the autos are of female basketball players. They are concerned that they tend to have lower value. However, we hope that the disparity in auto value will soon become a thing of the past.

The market doesn’t know how to treat high school cards. The old Topps Chrome McDonald’s All-American Basketball cards aren’t worth all that much. Even when they feature legends like Chris Paul, they don’t have much market value.
Topps is putting in a good deal of effort to make sure that the new iterations do better. Therefore, you will find a bunch of autos and parallels in these boxes. But this is a new release, and we don’t know how well they will do in this regard.
No one has any idea why Topps has decided to include paper autos in a chrome product. They did so in the 2022-23 version, mystifying collectors. And in the 2023-24 release, they are here again in the form of the “Paper At Event / Gameday Autographs.”
Honestly, isn’t the point of spending extra money on a chrome product to get hits that are, you know, in chromium form? But what do I know, I don’t get the big bucks from Fanatics.
The base checklist is 100 players long and includes the McDonald’s All-American Basketball selections for men and women. Most notably, Bronny James, selected by USC, is the star of Sierra Canyon High School. The checklist is made up in the following way:
Each of the 24 boy and girl selections is featured in three base cards. An action shot card and a photoshoot card. In addition, each feature is in a group photo. There is one for the girls and one for the boys. Then, a select few parts in the co-MVPs card as well.
As I mentioned earlier, the checklists for these products tend to be quite good because they are picked by experts. And the 2023-24 Topps Chrome McDonald’s All-American Basketball Review is no exception.

No one is buying 2023-24 Topps Chrome McDonald’s All-American Basketball for the inserts. The parallels and autos are the real attraction here. Nonetheless, there are inserts here, and we will take a look at them.

These inserts come in at a rate of 1:4 packs. They are a loving tribute to the 2007 Topps release, a predecessor to the revamped release.
The design was a nice, simple one, which served as a call back to a certain kind of mid-1980s design. Of course, last year, they used the 2006 Topps McDonald’s All-American design as their template for the retro card.
These cards had very low resale value, which makes sense because they are pretty common. Still, because the old designs are nice, they work.

Topps has created this new insert for the release. While aesthetically pleasing enough, New Waves qualifies as an utterly generic insert.
It is meaningless to call any particular member of this class part of a new wave. They are all a new wave. That is the point! And there is nothing distinctive about this insert either. You can find these at a rate of 1:20 packs.
Overall odds – 1:20 Hobby; 1:21 Blaster.

This new insert looks very tacky but in a cute junk wax kind of way. And I do like that it is in the McDonald’s colors, which makes it very relevant to the product concept.
These cards should have far better value than the other inserts because they are all numbered to ten. This is a good one.

The 2023-24 Topps Chrome McDonald’s All-American Basketball has a great selection of autos. Unlike most releases, all of the players featured in the base checklist can also be found among the autos.
And with two of these appearing per hobby box, they make up the center of gravity for the entire release.

It seems weird to call autos by this name in a Chrome product until you remember that it has paper autos, too, for some reason.
This series is significant because while the card is subtle and classic looking, the borders are refractors. It creates a unique look that really shines.
The best of these cards from last year’s products sold for under $200 despite being very attractive. But the Bronny is already selling for $1,200.

Also known as the “Paper At Event Cards,” they are the most controversial cards in this release. It is still unclear why Topps felt the need to use paper for one of the main autographs in this release. But Fanatics works in mysterious ways.
The cards certainly look nice, and since they appear in one per 30 hobby packs, they are not too common.

In this section of our reviews, we like to do an in-depth analysis of how the product performed over the years. Unfortunately, we can’t really do that here. There has only been one previous release of this product.
The older Topps release from back in the day is not all that relevant, though we will take a look at that as well. All this to say, we don’t have much data, and the product could catch on far more than it has so far.

The hobby box for the 2022-23 Topps Chrome McDonald’s All-American Basketballproduct goes for $150 right now. That means it is reselling for slightly less than a brand-new box will cost you.
Meanwhile, the original product from the day did not have hobby boxes. But you can pick up an “Exclusive Player Set” for $139. But honestly, that means very little. The product has yet to establish itself in the market, so people aren’t used to buying it yet.
We also can’t compare good years with big players to those without because it’s so early in the career of all the players who appeared. Next year we will have more data.
We have a bit more to work with when it comes to singles. We can look at some of the singles from the older Topps release, the 2022-23 set, and this year’s set since I am writing this a few days after the release. Let’s look at how they are faring on the open market.
Card | Value |
---|---|
2006 Topps McDonald’s All-American Kevin Durant Rookie Card Rookie Card (PSA 10) | $86 |
2007 Topps McDonald’s All-American James Harden Rookie Card Rookie Card (PSA 10) | $125 |
2022 Topps Chrome McDonald’s All-American Superfractor 1/1 Brandon Miller #2K6-66 (Raw) | $555 |
2022 Topps McDonald’s All American Gradey Dick Black Refractor Auto /10 (PSA 10) | $127 |
2023 Topps Chrome McDonald’s All American Bronny James Auto Refractor 1 Day (Raw) | $1,275 |
2023 Topps McDonalds All American Ron Holland II Orange Basketball Auto /25 (Raw) | $200 |
Very few of the cards in this release, in any year, have topped $200. The vast majority of those that have are Bronny cards. Brandon Miller was easily the highest performer from the last release.
Before investing, you must ask yourself if these Bronny cards will likely have a lasting value. The answer is probably no. We don’t know how good a player he will be in the long term. If the answer is not that great, then the value will go down.
If he does turn into a superstar, the value of this card will likely go down as college and proper rookie cards are printed.

The Topps Chrome McDonald’s All-American Basketball release is still establishing itself in the hobby. The 2023-24 release will help with that. It is an attractive bunch of cards with a good crop of players.
And of course, the presence of Bronny James is garnering plenty of attention for the release. The investment for the buy-in is not all that much either. So, there is a good deal to recommend this release.
I doubt there is a lot of long-term upside for these cards or boxes. There is a lot of hype around Bronny, but as I explained above, whether he pans out or not, the value of his cards from this release seems inflated.
The market for college uniform cards is problematic enough; the high school one is traditionally quite limited.
