A Guide To 2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey And A Glaring Omission

The flagship product of the hockey season is finally here. And with it, a new crop of Young Guns for our enjoyment and evaluation. But the 2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey release offers much more. It has become a more multi-dimensional release in recent years.

But does it succeed in its loftier ambitions? Is this release worth the prices, which have been creeping up lately? We have all the answers in our 2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Review.

2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey release date

I spend so much time in these reviews, whining about the release dates. Yes, I am looking at you, Panini. So, it is only fair that I give some credit where it is due. Upper Deck released their flagship product a mere eight days after the start of the 2023-24 NHL season.

Opening day was October 10th, and the hobby boxes dropped on October 18, 2023. Well done. You can expect the retail formats to arrive on the shelves starting November 1, 2023.

The achievement is awe-inspiring since Upper Deck was also suffering from the supply chain failures of the COVID-19 days. Last year, this product came out in November.

But the 2021-22 release didn’t come out until March 2022. So, they were facing some real problems.  But unlike other companies, they seem to have put those dark days behind them.

History of Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey

The storied release of Upper Deck Hockey is an inseparable part of the well-known evolution of the Carlsbad, California-based card company.

The company made a huge splash in the industry in 1989 with its trend-setting baseball release. They tried to jump into the ring in all major sports, so in 1990-91, the first set of the hockey flagship came out.

The first release already featured the landmark Young Guns inserts. However, it was overprinted and did not catch on. But Upper Deck cut the number and returned them for the 1999-2000 release. They were now low-numbered and featured snazzier designs.

At first, the insert did not take off; there were too many of them, and it was shelved. However, the company brought them back in 1999-00 as lower print cards. Today, it is easily the main draw in the release. Upper Deck found that balance of rarity, which makes fans look forward to opening the packs.

In 2005-06, the NFL was coming off a lockout year. That meant there was a far larger crop of rookies than just waiting to be introduced into the league.

The yield of Young Guns that year was sensational. It included Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin, two of the best players of their generation. That helped cement the flagship cards and Young Guns as the central release in the hobby.

2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey pros

The Young Guns design this year is solid, and what can be more important than that in a release so heavily focused on that insert?

As we will say, there are also some excellent variants for this wonderful rookie card set. In particular, the Outburst Silver is a nice little sparkly parallel that adds some pizzazz to these inserts. But in the cons, we will discuss a snag with the Young Guns this time.

There aren’t a lot of pros this time, unfortunately. But the cons section below is a doozie.

2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey cons

We love Upper Deck flagship hockey for all sorts of reasons. But let’s get real; we are primarily here for the Young Guns cards. And that is why the lack of Young Guns in many hobby boxes is a real cause for concern.

We are told that each hobby box comes with an average of 6 Young Guns cards. That is certainly a generous amount. But many of the breaks I have seen have had fewer than that, more along the lines of 1 or 2.

Meanwhile, if you look online, collectors say they bought several boxes without landing a single one. This is a severe problem that may undermine the popularity of this release and leave a bad taste in people’s mouths for the next one.

Another common complaint concerns a surprise insert in this product named Deons. Yes, Deons. What does that mean? No one knows.

However, it appears that hockey fans like their inserts with recognized English words because people are not impressed with this innovation.

Price for Upper Deck Series 1 2023-24 increases

But the biggest downside is the price. It has gone up to $150 per box, a far higher price than the $99 you could pre-buy the product for in 2022-23. But if that’s not enough, the number of cards in it has been cut drastically.

You got 192 in last season’s hobby box, and you can expect 142 this year for $50 less. Any way you look at it that is not a good deal.

Finally, the general feeling among fans is that this crop of rookies is not particularly strong. Incredibly depressing is the absence of Connor Bedard from the checklist. Some powerful cohorts of Young Guns have spoiled hockey fans in recent years.

So, the disappointment is somewhat overdone. However, considering that the boxes are more expensive than usual this year, this watered-down class is challenging to swallow.

2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey checklist

The 2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey release checklist is somewhat weak. The rookies aren’t that great, as we said. Everyone is looking for the same guy in the 2023-24 products: Connor Bedard of the Blackhawks. But he does not have a Young Guns card here.

Nevertheless, there is an unannounced “Easter Egg” NHL Draft short print of the phenom. Aside from that, the feeling is that there isn’t much depth to the rookie class. Quite a few stronger players have been withheld for 2023-24 Upper Deck Series 2 Hockey.

The base set consists of 200 players. The only parallels available in retail releases are the Outburst Silver. They look great, but it would be nice to have some more selections available. The hobby boxes include the format exclusive Clear Cut parallels, which come 1:48. As well as:

  • Deluxe #/250
  • Exclusives #/100
  • Outburst Red #/25
  • High Gloss #/10
  • Outburst Gold 1/1.

Review inserts

The inserts in this release have raised a few eyebrows. Let’s see what all the fuss is about in this overview of the inserts in 23-24 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey.

Young Guns

These are the classic and most beloved hockey rookie cards of all. This year, the Young Guns release comes with new sparkly parallels. They have been quite popular with collectors so far. As usual, there are 50 Young Guns, and they arrive at 1:2 packs in hobby boxes.

Parallels:

  • Outburst Silver (1:30 Hobby/ePack; 1:90 Retail/Blaster/Tin/Hanger)
    • Clear Cut (1:144 Hobby)Deluxe #/250 (Hobby/ePack)Exclusives #/100 (Hobby/ePack)Outburst Red #/25 (Hobby/ePack)High Gloss #/10 (Hobby/ePack)
    • Outburst Gold 1/1 (Hobby/ePack).

200′ x 85′

A new arrival in the flagship product, 200′ x 85′, is an insert based on the dimensions of the hockey rink. Featuring a measured rink as background for an action shot. The inserts look okay, but I doubt they will hold much value. There is a 1/1 black version, which will undoubtedly do better on the market.

UD Canvas

Aside from the vaunted Young Guns cards, the UD Canvas cards are, without a doubt, the highlight of the flagship hockey release every year.  These are inserts modeled after the Topps Stadium Club model of having a bold action picture across the entire card with no borders.

Low-numbered UD Canvas cards have a very strong value for inserts in a flagship product. They come in the following variations:

  • Standard UD Canvas (1:24 packs)
    • UD Canvas Young Guns (1:24 packs) cards are part of the set
    • Printing Plates and Hobby-only Black & White versions (Base – 1:48 packs; Young Guns – 1:144 packs).
    • UD Canvas Signatures low-numbered auto versions of these inserts.

Dazzlers

The Dazzlers inset is familiar, featuring some of the flashier players in the NHL on a background that seems inspired by fireworks. These inserts were better looking in previous years. A complete set of earlier years goes for under $200. The go-to low print version in 2023-23 Upper Deck Series 1 is the Pink (1:144 packs).

UD Portraits

In its infinite wisdom, Upper Deck decided that what we need in hockey products is portraits of hockey stars as kings. Are they wrong? Not necessarily! This is a fun insert coming in at 1:7 packs. I have never seen anything quite like it, which is already good.

Special Edition

This glitzy-looking insert has an old-school gold look. More than anything else, it reminds me of the aesthetic sense that Trump uses to decorate his bathrooms. The inserts are a revival of an Upper Deck card they used for several sports in the 1990s. They arrive at a rate of one per five packs.

Star Zone

This veteran insert is returning for the 2023/24 release. They tend to be among the most attractive in this product, featuring two juxtaposed action pictures on a colorful background of psychedelic blots.

However, the market value of Star Zone inserts is negligible. There are gold /50 parallels that should hold a somewhat better deal.

Star Surge

A new insert, Star Surge, features young talent with a background of bold colors. The designs are lovely and arrive at 1:7 packs, making them scarce enough to have some value. Look out for the die-cut version (1:240 packs), which looks nice.

Teacher’s Pet

A lighthearted insert featuring what looks like a primary school class board featuring a report card. The top of the report card highlights the best skill of the player. The cards are worth very little, as someone bought the entire set for a mere $35.

Review of Autos and Memorabilia cards

Autos and memorabilia hits remain minimal in the Upper Deck flagship release. That was not much of a problem when boxes sold for $100. But you may have expected an improvement with them at $150 and including fewer cards.

But that is not the case. There are auto versions of many cards here, most notably the Young Guns. But generally, do not expect to pull autos here.

2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey value

As I have hinted throughout this review, value is a severe problem for this release. The value balance per card has changed, and not for the better.

So, while the Upper Deck flagship release has in the past offered decent value for a relatively low price, that may be changing right now. Let’s crunch the numbers and see.

Wax

The box this year is selling for $150. How does that compare to the current value of packages from recent years? Here are the numbers.

ReleaseValue
2018-19 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Hobby Box$199.95
2019-20 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Hobby Box$157.95
2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Hobby Box$99.95
2021-22 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Hobby Box$74.95
2022-23 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Hobby Box$69.95

The price rise really changes the calculus. All the post-COVID-19 boom boxes sell for a good deal less than the current price. Even the older boxes from before the era when stashing wax was popular are not worth much more than the current price.

Then, keep in mind that the new packages have fewer cards, so may have a lower value. And the rookie class is somewhat questionable. So, there is no question. These boxes are total duds as investments now.

Singles

The strength of the Upper Deck flagship has never been in boxes. But it does offer some inserts that have good value in the market, most notably the Young Guns cards.

Let’s look at some outstanding recent sales of singles from this release. I did not put any of the high-selling 2015-16 crop of rookies here, or pre-COVID boom cards in general, to allow for a better comparison.

CardValue
2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Alexis LaFreniere High Gloss /10 (Raw)$2,228
2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Cole Caufield /100 Exclusives 201 (Raw)$2,191
2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1 Draft Easter Egg #SP-1 Connor Bedard (Raw)$1,022
2022-23 Upper Deck Series 1 Owen Power CLEAR CUT Young Guns (PSA 10)$899

It’s easy to see that the most recent Young Guns, even the most elite among them, are not selling for as much as the classic 2015-16 equivalents. Indeed, even the older cards appear to be selling for lower prices.

So, while singles remain the play for the Upper Deck Series 1 release, they are less valuable than expected. I believe we are saying the fancier hockey cards, like the RPAs available in other Upper Deck releases, replace Young Guns as the go-to for hockey fans.

A final word on the 2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1 review

There is very little good news regarding this release. A cut in the number of cards available accompanies the higher price point. The overall value of this release, both in the realm of wax and singles, seems to be declining just as prices are rising.

Even worse, the biggest name in this cohort, Connor Bedard, has been held back and will be included in Series 2. The best thing I can say about this release is that Upper Deck has promptly put it on the market. This seems like an excellent product to avoid.

Shaiel Ben-Ephraim

Shaiel Ben-Ephraim is the emeritus editor of Cardlines. He continues to write for several hobby outlets, including this one and Cardbase. He collects primarily vintage baseball and soccer and has a weird obsession with 1971 Topps.

In his spare time, Shaiel is sobbing into his bourbon when the Mets lose and playing Dungeons and Dragons. In a past life, Dr. Ben-Ephraim was a political science professor, journalist, and diplomat. But cards are more fun.
