We give you the hard truths you need to hear. But no one would consider it one of the weakest releases either. It has a very distinctive design concept that some collectors love. The cards are dark and black-oriented but throw that into stark relief by using many bright colors as a notable contrast.
And with a mere seven cards in every hobby box, it certainly falls into the minimalist “hit or bust” end of things. Those two elements combine to create a unique ripping experience. For some people, it’s among their favorite releases, while others consider it a waste of shelf space.

Panini Obsidian Football first hit the shelves in 2018. That was an excellent time to launch a new product (though the Panini executives did not know this at the time) because it allowed Obsidian Football to establish itself before the hobby exploded in 2020.
What was the concept behind the release? Obsidian is an igneous rock that is essentially a nature-made form of glass that comes into being when the most violent lava cools down quickly. It most commonly presents in a jet-black color. However, you can also find the stuff in red and brown.
Sometimes, obsidian can also have gray, green, or yellow shades. These colors go well together and have served the brand well aesthetically. While most chrome cards have a silver background, these have black, which creates a more stark contrast, but when designed properly, they can really pop.
A final unique element in this release is the etchings. There are often little patterns carved into the cards. This fits well with the concept of a naturally occurring rock created by lava etching its way down the mountainside.

The cards are very high-quality chrome items, which is among their most significant advantages. Meanwhile, the backgrounds are particularly sparse, almost always completely black. But the edges are where things get more creative. Borders feature all sorts of colorful patterns and attractive etchings.
Another nice touch was that only 100 copies of each card were circulated in the first release. Therefore, you can always rest assured that Obsidian Football is not one of those massively overprinted products.
Therefore, it is not surprising that the core color of the Panini Obsidian product is black, but the other colors are used to temper it. These cards are high-quality chrome, usually with beautiful and sometimes elaborate patterns of color on a black background.
Although the theme is an earth-bound rock, this release has a certain space-like quality. That is a prevalent element in sports card releases and inserts.
There wasn’t a massive call for a sports card brand named after rapidly cooling lava. Therefore, it was seen at the time as a somewhat bizarre addition to the Panini release calendar. But Obsidian managed to carve out a niche for itself through the genuinely and undeniably beautiful designs that the cards featured.
Predictably, the responses to the release ranged from “Do we really need another freaking card set?” to “These cards are gorgeous; I don’t care what you think.” And all a new brand needs is a core of loyal fans. No one cares what the people who don’t buy in think about it.

The release has always had 7 cards per hobby box. Not much has changed over the years. At first, it features four memorabilia and autograph cards in each box. Now, it specifies two of each, which is more or less what you could expect before.
2018-19, Panini also released its first basketball version of Obsidian. In 2019-20, the company also released a soccer version.
However, the print run did start to increase quite quickly. 2018 Obsidian Football had only 100 copies of each card, but by 2019, that had already increased to 125.
However, some improvements helped maintain the release’s popularity. For example, in 2020, Obsidian Football first introduced Color Blasts to the product. But they put their own unique spin on it, with the Color Blast Black case hit.
Panini also added more RPAs to the product, all dressed in the distinctive Obsidian design. The best ones had beautiful etchings to complement the patches.
Realizing that the etchings were becoming one of the most beloved characteristics of the line, Panini introduced new parallels featuring that distinctive design element every year. For example, I really enjoyed the Electric Etch Gold Flood /10 cards in the 2022 Panini Obsidian Football release.
The official release date for the 2023 iteration of Obsidian Football is March 27, 2024. You don’t need me to tell you that the Super Bowl was a month and a half earlier, and no one wants 2023 NFL products now.
We have been impressed with Panini’s efforts to release many of its products at earlier and more reasonable points in the year. In particular, they have succeeded with many Prizm and Donruss products. However, this does not appear true with more peripheral releases like Obsidian.
How does the date compare with previous years? Well, 2022 Panini Obsidian Football had an almost identical release date. It came out on March 24, 2023. That may seem bad, but it was a significant improvement on the 2021 product, which came out in freaking June.
Like so many other releases, the problems for Obsidian Football began during the COVID-19 period and the supply chain crisis that followed.
If you go back to 2020, the release came out at the exceptionally reasonable juncture of December 23, 2020. That is a good two months before the Super Bowl. Indeed, the first edition of Panini Obsidian Football was released in early December 2018.
Late in the year, during the season, is the intended time for the product and the sweet spot. Hopefully, it returns there. However, Fanatics will have the rights soon anyway.

The Obsidian release was always viewed as placed somewhere on the lower side of the high-end spectrum. Therefore, it is only a hobby box release. However, there have been a couple of hobby spin-offs in the past.
There is the First Off The Line (FOTL) version and occasionally the T-Mall version. We aren’t sure about the latter, but we are happy that Panini is releasing a FOTL for 2023 Panini Obsidian Football.
Here are the specs for the two types of hobby boxes.
The Panini Obsidian Football franchise rises and falls on its design. While not everyone loves the look of these cards, enough people do to keep them in business seven years after the launch. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that.
But to me, there is no question that Obsidian cards rank among the best that Panini has produced. That is why when Obsidian first appeared back in 2018, it was considered the best new product of the year, and many enthusiasts raved about how it looked.
By now, the novelty has worn off, but it remains one of the products that comes to mind when you think of the most beautiful football cards on the market.
Obsidian has also developed a well-deserved reputation for featuring the sturdiest and best-made chrome cards in the Panini lineup.

When Obsidian first came out, many were won over by the beautiful designs. However, the skeptics said volcanic rock wasn’t much of a concept to base an entire line of sports cards around.
Now that the enthusiasm around the aesthetics of Obsidian has faded and the novelty has worn off, that seems like a better argument than ever.
One Blowout Forums user expressed this commonly held sentiment recently and wrote, “Feel like this is another product that has run its course… virtually the same year after year. Somehow, 16 products have been announced to match last year’s number. Not even a single try at any innovation this year.” Another agreed with this assessment and asked, “Did these ding dongs use the same background for every color blast in this product this year?” They received the knowing reply, “Copy/paste works better that way.” Blowout Forums remains undefeated.
It always rubs me wrong when a supposedly hit-heavy and high-end (sort of) release has sticker autos. Obsidian is no exception. Does Panini think anything under $1,000 a box is unworthy of on-card autos?
Because it certainly seems that way. Similarly, the memorabilia swatches are not game-worn. That brings us to the most common complaint about any product: the price. When these were selling for over $150, people thought Obsidian was overpriced.
Now, these boxes go for $600. That is $85 per card. Are these cards really worth all that? Considering that these are non-game-worn patches and with sticker autos, it’s not even close, and we all know it.
We have all had ample opportunity to get our impressions of the 2023 NFL rookie class. That is arguably the only advantage of having these releases come out well after the season is over.
Of course, it can also take away the excitement when you already know that the once highly-rated rookie you pulled is already considered a bust.
Of course, Bryce Young was considered the top guy going into the 2023 NFL season. But his first season has been very disappointing, and some are already concluding that he doesn’t have what it takes to be among the best quarterbacks in the league.
His rookie season was far more comparable to recent busts than to more successful quarterbacks. There were already reservations about Young due to his size. Still, one season isn’t enough to write the guy off forever.
The guy who really broke through this year was Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud. Indeed, he has already become one of the most-graded athletes in the hobby.
But while his rookie year was far better than Young’s, there is a solid argument to be made that Stroud’s better situation is a lot of the difference. Young has no offensive line or running game to fall back on.
Meanwhile, the Texans have proved to be far better all around than expected. Indeed, their coach, DeMeco Ryans, was among the favorites for coach of the year, considering his tremendous job.
Anthony Richardson is also a promising young quarterback with tremendous upside. His card prices have been steadily climbing for months now. So, overall, this seems like a pretty strong rookie cohort that may produce one or more genuinely top-notch quarterbacks.
Traditionally, Obsidian Football has a 200-card checklist. Half of those cards are former players and veteran stars, while the other 100 are designated for rookies.

We don’t yet have the 2023 Panini Obsidian Football parallels specifications. As always, the main parallels in this set fall under the Electric Etch category. However, these are the ones we can expect in this release:
The contra is particularly notable in this release because, unlike the others, it has a white background, which stands in stark relief to the other cards.
There aren’t too many inserts in the Obsidian line. But some of the ones you will find are very short print and highly valuable. We have an overview of some of the highlights for you.
When Color Blast first appeared in 2020 Panini Obsidian Football, they were the standard and beloved inserts in Prizm and elsewhere. However, Panini started producing special inserts just for Obsidian the following year, playing off the theme.
Color Blast Black takes advantage of the trademark Obsidian black background to adorn it with the blasts that make this insert so special. The result is arguably more attractive than the standard Color Blast cards.
But what about value? Here, the cards do not perform as well as one would hope. The most valuable Color Blast Black card to sell in recent months was a 2021 Trevor Lawrence PSA 10, which went for $1,800.
That doesn’t sound so bad until you compare it to the Prizm CJ Stroud Color Blast, which recently sold for $10,800. Unfortunately, the Color Blast Black card doesn’t have the same cache as its white background cousin.
This is one of the best-looking die-cut inserts in the business. The interesting space-inspired shapes and the trademark Obsidian etchings make for a fine pairing. Some of the cards look a bit like an X-wing Starfighter or even the Transformers logo.
Either way, they are far more evocative than your average die-cut, which can often look like a card cut into a different shape for no reason.
The values are not worthy of the card’s aesthetic appeal. There have been no verified sales above $500 for these inserts (in football form, at least) over the last three months. Some really beautiful and excellent ones, like a Lamar Jackson from 2022, go in the $200-300 range.
Technically, anything Obsidian is volcanic. Meanwhile, the design for these cards is fairly nondescript, and nothing particularly volcanic about them. Therefore, this is a pretty pointless insert. The market agrees with my assessment and doesn’t tend to give these cards much value.
The brand has always included its fair share of autographed cards, offering two per hobby box in most years. As Obsidian Football matured, it has increasingly stressed its RPAs. Unfortunately, these are sticker auto RPAs.
But we have already complained about that enough. So, let’s move that unpleasant fact aside and look at the quality of the autographs in this release.
The Obsidian version of the RPA is the Rookie Jersey Autograph. Like everything else in this release, these are very attractive cards. They come in various print runs and classes of patch quality. Unfortunately, the pieces of memorabilia are not game-worn.
With the various issues the Obsidian RPAs have in terms of stickers and non-game-used swatches, how well do they do for value? Surprisingly severely, to be honest. A Lamar Jackson RPA sold for $1,500. However, that is quite the outlier.
Even Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence Rookie Jersey Autograph cards sell for under $1,000. While we have seen RPAs with lower value than the Obsidian cards, the market does not appreciate the characteristics of the Rookie Jersey Autograph cards and treats them accordingly.
These cards are almost identical to the Rookie Jersey Autographs. But they do contain two swatches. Yes, neither of them is game-worn, before you ask. I will say that the etchings on the Rookie Jersey Ink cards tend to be more elaborate and, therefore, more excellent.
The dual patch also seems to suit the design better. What about the value? Recent sales peak at around $800. That is for the Josh Allen and Joe Burrow versions. So, it won’t get much more valuable than that.
Obsidian seems to prefer memorabilia and auto combos over pure auto cards and pure memorabilia cards. By combining the two, they may try to compensate for the sticker and non-game worn problem. I have no idea.
These memorabilia cards are beautiful. They feature the best rookies of the cohort with flames and explosions around them and a nice piece of jersey front and center. It is the Obsidian design concept at its best.
Does that translate into value? We already know the answer to that. No. There isn’t a single sale for over $400. That includes 1/1s and superstar quarterback versions. The cache of this release isn’t all that could be hoped.
When it was brand new, the release sold for $165 per box, which was a relatively large amount to spend on a hobby box at the time; even then, fans were complaining about the price.
Complaining about prices is the prime occupation of most collectors. But now the boxes are going for more than three times that. That means it’s a far higher bar for the product to be worthwhile. Does it meet that standard? Let’s crunch the numbers and see.

Do the old boxes resell on the secondary market at prices that justify the $600 price tag? Let’s look at how all previous year’s boxes are doing nowadays.

The recent Obsidian boxes sell for around the price of a new box. That is a good sign and means you are unlikely to take a bath in one of these hobby boxes. However, the 2020 year is always a test for football products.
Since that was such a strong year for NFL rookies, it gives you a strong indication of what the ceiling is for these boxes. And while the 2020 Panini Obsidian Football Hobby Box is double the regular price, for many other products, it’s quadruple.
So, all the numbers point in the same general direction. A box of Obsidian is likely to stay about even. You will not see much of a rise or fall, all things being equal.
Do you think the 2023 rookie crop will be a bumper year that will increase prices significantly over time? Or an average bunch, in which case will the value hold more or less?
But of course, if you really believe in Stroud, Young, and Richardson, betting on a box of Prizm or National Treasures is a far better idea.
We got some idea of their value when going over the RPAs and other “hits” in this release. Or the lack thereof. While Obsidian cards are well regarded in the hobby for their beauty, they are not considered solid investments for the most part.
Let’s look at some of the most notable recent purchases of singles from this product on eBay.

The Mahomes card is a remarkable outlier. But Patrick is not your normal rookie. We have no idea when we will see his equal again, and this is a gorgeous 1/1. It was sold and then resold on eBay, first for $7,333 in January and then for $9,600 in February.
What a great card. Then you also have a 1/1 Josh Allen, fetching a reasonable price. However, you will see a significant difference if you compare them to RPAs from the higher-end products with on-card and game-worn memorabilia.
What about the rest? The two most recent releases do not have any cards selling for over $2,000 in the last few months.
As you can see, the singles are not a disaster. If you hit the jackpot, you can make about triple the box value, which is fine, but other products offer better.
The main advantage of Obsidian has become a hindrance now. There is hardly any variety in the designs from year to year. Having come up with a highly creative product, Panini has not bothered to keep it fresh.
Then there is the hits problem. Any product with only seven cards per box is marketing itself as a hits-oriented one. Obsidian certainly fits this category, coming with two guaranteed autos and two more memorabilia cards.
The problem is that these hits are not premium because of their characteristics, and the market treats them accordingly.
But let’s not be too harsh about the Obsidian franchise. Because most of us love how the cards look, the hits are better than you would expect. The boxes seem set to hold or increase the value you buy them at, which is good at $600 a pop.
In the final examination, if you like the Obsidian designs, you can get a box without feeling that you have been completely ripped off. That is saying a lot in the current market conditions.
It is all the more aggravating that Panini has been unable or unwilling to update this product and make it fresh. There are a lot of fans of Obsidian, and with a bit more investment, this could have been one of the top products in the Panini lineup. But it looks like that will not happen.
