A Guide To The 2023 Topps Star Wars Release

2023 Topps Star Wars

Set to drop on August 4th of this year, fans of Star Wars Topps trading cards are about to be treated to the latest release from the legendary franchise.

As a flagship release, fans shouldn’t be expecting an overly loud and overactive theme or a particularly catchy name, delivering instead an affordable price tag and a variety of cards and styles.

It is worth noting that there is also a 2023 Topps Chrome Star Wars collection, which was released earlier this year.

History of Star Wars trading cards

Star Wars trading card products have a rich pedigree and were originally released in the same year as the first movie of the franchise (A New Hope) which came out in theaters back in 1977.

Since then, they have become a firm fan favorite as they provided Star Wars fanatics and collectors with another product to collect.

It was actually Topps that created the initial set and they have produced every major set over the last 46 years. O-Pee-Chee also released three series of cards in 1977, but they didn’t enjoy much success in comparison to the popularity of Topps and there were no more O-Pee-Chee Star Wars cards ever released again.

Since the inaugural pack release, Star Wars trading cards have developed into a staple in the hobby, with a number of sets released over the years, some of which are worth a lot of money.

Star Wars trading cards have been released in a number of sets, each focusing on different aspects of the Star Wars universe, be it TV series or paying their respects to the 11 movies.

After the success of that first release of cards, Topps followed up with new collection sets to commemorate the follow-up movies The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi in 1980 and 1983, respectively.

Following  10 years without any new and original Star Wars content, Topps released the Star Wars Galaxy brand in 1993. Galaxy would get another release in 1994, 1995, plus consecutive releases from 2009 through 2012 before the latest Galaxy release in 2018.

Card production picked up in the late 90s and in the early 2000s as the prequel trilogy got underway with the first one being The Phantom Menace which was released in 1999 before Attack Of The Clones and Revenge Of The Sith in 2002 and 2005 respectively.

In all, between 1995 and 2005, Topps released a stunning 25 Star Wars card products. Topps carried on releasing products on a regular basis as new Star Wars content was produced, which brings us to the 2023 release.

Some Star Wars cards have significant value, especially when they are rare. Alongside their rarity, other reasons for their popularity can be put down to significance or iconic status.

Rare cards, which could be those with limited print runs or specific variations, are greatly sought after by collectors. This means that you should be looking out for cards that have unique features, misprints or special editions that make them stand out from the regular cards.

Cards featuring the most famous and popular characters from the Star Wars saga, such as Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader or Yoda, tend to hold considerable value. The popularity and lasting appeal of these characters make their cards highly sought after by collectors.
