2024 Topps Chrome Update sold out on Topps.com in less than 2 minutes, and remains popular with collectors on the secondary market. The product is driven by its rookie class, so who are the best 2024 Topps Chrome Update rookie cards? Continue reading for a full breakdown.
Huge Hype For 2024 Topps Chrome Update Generates Hobby Buzz
As always, rookies are the driving force behind the product, with both the current-day collector demand and the potential long-term value of the product tied up in the quality of the rookie class.
Of the 200 cards in the base checklist of 2024 Topps Chrome Update, there are 103 total players in the rookie checklist. A few players have two cards, so it’s safe to assume one of the two is a rookie debut. Unfortunately, the official checklist doesn’t differentiate traditional rookie cards vs. the less valuable rookie debuts. (Not to be confused with the 1/1 MLB Debut Patch Autographs.)
All rookies have already had a rookie card in either 2024 Topps Chrome or the paper 2024 Topps Update. Paul Skenes is the biggest player whose first Chrome rookie is in this 2024 Topps Chrome Update release. Because I’ve detailed these other releases extensively, this breakdown will be paired down with a focus on the 1/1 MLB Debut Patch Autographs in 2024 Topps Chrome Update.
To see my full analysis on these players, please check out my 2024 Topps Chrome and 2024 Topps Update reviews.
There are 251 players with 1/1 MLB Debut Patch Autograph cards in 2024 Topps Chrome Update. These are the cards everyone is chasing, and we’ve even seen the Pittsburgh Pirates place a bounty on Paul Skenes’ 1/1 MLB Debut Patch Autograph.
Skenes burst onto the scene in May and quickly became a dominant pitcher in the NL, going 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA and 170 strikeouts in 133 innings pitched. In only 23 games, he was worth a healthy 5.9 WAR. He also won the NL Rookie of the Year and placed third in the NL Cy Young.
Other top rookies who appeared on cards in 2024 Topps Chrome include:
Players who made their MLB debut between June 1, 2023 and May 24, 2024 are featured in the 1/1 MLB Debut Patch Autograph checklist. A ton of the best rookies from 2024 are included, as well as Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz who made his MLB debut in 2023. Unfortunately, you won’t be pulling De La Cruz’s 1/1 MLB Debut Patch Autograph. It was already found and graded with PSA, receiving a 10/10 by PSA shortly after the product released.
There’s still a ton out there to be found, however, so good luck and happy ripping! Follow CardLines on Twitter and let us know what you hit!

Evan Carter, Texas Rangers OF (#RDPA-EC): After an incredible 2023 MLB Postseason, Carter played just 45 games in 2024 because of a back injury. When fully healthy, he’s a plus hitter with elite speed and enough power to make hobby impact.
Elly De La Cruz, Cincinnati Reds SS (#RDPA-EDLC): Elly’s power/speed combination is one that few can rival. He hit 25 home runs and stole 67 bases in his first full season in the big leagues, but he’s nowhere near his ceiling yet.
Junior Caminero, Tampa Bay Rays SS (#RDPA-JC): His calling card is elite power with above-average hit and speed tools. He doesn’t get as much attention as some of the other guys on this list, but don’t sleep on Caminero.
Jackson Chourio, Milwaukee Brewers OF (#RDPA-JCH): Chourio’s rookie season didn’t get as much love as it deserves, but a plus hit tool and 70-grade power and speed is all you need to know.
Jasson Domínguez, New York Yankees OF (#RDPA-JD): Before Wemby was The Alien, Domíngez was The Martian. The Yankees rookie has above average or better tools across the board, and his MLB Debut Patch Autograph will be one of the most sought after of 2024.
Jackson Holliday, Baltimore Orioles 2B/SS (#RDPA-JHO): Holliday’s rookie season didn’t live up to the hype he had in Spring Training, but his well-rounded skillset gives him a high floor despite the rough start.
Jackson Merrill, San Diego Padres OF (#RDPA-JME): Merrill put together one of the most impressively clutch rookie seasons I’ve ever seen. He finished second in NL Rookie of the Year voting and is one of the top young players in baseball.
Paul Skenes, Pittsburgh Pirates P (#RDPA-PS): 2024 NL Rookie of the Year Award winner, future Cy Young winner, and 30 years of Pirates season tickets. Enough said.
Wyatt Langford, Texas Rangers OF (#RDPA-WL): Langford couldn’t overcome a slow start and hamstring injury, but his immense power and surprising speed makes him a hobby favorite.
Colton Cowser, Baltimore Orioles OF (#RDPA-CC): All of Cowser’s offensive tools are above average, giving him a high floor and moderate ceiling. It’s nothing spectacular, but he’s a solid Tier 2 contributor.
Heston Kjerstad, Baltimore Orioles OF (#RDPA-HK): Kjerstad’s power is his best tool but there’s risk in his swing-and-miss rate. He hasn’t had a ton of big league at bats so it’s tough to gauge how much his 116 wRC+ is true talent or the benefit of a small sample size. Still, I like Kjerstad’s upside.
Pete Crow-Armstrong, Chicago Cubs OF (#RDPA-PC): PCA finished the season really strong offensively. If he can cut down on his chase rate, he’s going to be a stud.
Shota Imanaga, Chicago Cubs P (#RDPA-SI): Yamamoto gets all the love, but Imanaga showed he’s an ace too. Imanaga lacks the overpowering tools a pitcher usually needs to break through and have hobby appeal, but I think he’s one of the few that can still do it.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Los Angeles Dodgers P (#RDPA-YY): Future ace? Check. International appeal? Check. Teammates with Ohtani on one of the hobby’s favorite teams? Check.
Andy Pages, Los Angeles Dodgers OF (#RDPA-AP): Slugging outfielder with comps of Teoscar Hernández and Adam Duvall.
Austin Wells, New York Yankees C (#RDPA-AW): Wells put together a strong three month stretch in the regular season but looked absolutely lost in September and the playoffs. His ceiling isn’t high enough for me.
Blaze Alexander, Arizona Diamondbacks 2B/SS (#RDPA-BA): Despite the impressive power for a shortstop, it may not be enough to overcome Alexander’s extremely shaky hit tool.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand, Cincinnati Reds 1B/DH (#RDPA-CES): I was intrigued by CES coming into the season, but he got off to a terrible start before suffering a season-ending hand injury. He’s lost nearly all hobby value at this point.
Colt Keith, Detroit Tigers 2B (#RDPA-CK): Keith’s rough start nuked his season statistics, but he actually played pretty well for most of the season. He projects as a good hitter with good power but isn’t as explosive as I’d want from a hobby investment.
Ceddanne Rafaela, Boston Red Sox OF (#RDPA-CR): The power/speed combination is real, but Rafaela’s plate discipline is so bad it could negate his talented upside.
Christian Scott, New York Mets P (#RDPA-CS): Like I said in my previous breakdown, I have Scott above Jack Leiter but below Jared Jones. He’s also expected to miss the 2025 season recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Everson Pereira, New York Yankees OF (#RDPA-EP): Questionable hit tool and bad plate discipline but Yankees project get a really long leash.
Endy Rodríguez, Pittsburgh Pirates C (#RDPA-ER): Switch-hitting catcher with plus hit and power tools, but the 24-year-old missed all of the 2024 season because of Tommy John surgery. I love the tools but don’t know what he’s going to look like after so much time off.
Henry Davis, Pittsburgh Pirates OF/C (#RDPA-HAD): The former No. 1 overall pick has torn up Triple-A pitching but struggled when getting called up to the big leagues. At this point, Davis is a tough sell.
Jordan Beck, Colorado Rockies OF (#RDPA-JB): Good speed, big power, but whiffs way too much for a reliable everyday player.
Jonatan Clase, Seattle Mariners OF (#RDPA-JCL): Elite speed, average raw power, but a poor hit tool.
Justin Foscue, Texas Rangers 2B (#RDPA-JF): He makes a lot of contact, has very little power, and is a bad defender. There’s very little here to get excited about but Foscue will probably get an extended look to see if he can make adjustments.
Jung Hoo Lee, San Francisco Giants OF (#RDPA-JHL): Lee has exactly what you think of when you think “old-school leadoff hitter.” High contact rate, good plate discipline, speed, and defense.
Jared Jones, Pittsburgh Pirates P (#RDPA-JJ): Jones is going to be in Skenes’ shadow, but he has a lot of upside in his own right. But because he’s pitching behind Skenes, I’m not sure there’s enough here to warrant consideration.
Joey Loperfido, Houston Astros OF (#RDPA-JL): There’s a risk of Loperfido being a utility player if he doesn’t become a more consistent hitter.
Jordan Lawlar, Arizona Diamondbacks SS (#RDPA-JL): Lawlar was a top prospect who’s been injury prone during his professional career. Interest has faded but he probably has the highest upside in the tier.
Jack Leiter, Texas Rangers P (#RDPA-JLR): Leiter gets points on name recognition but there’s significant reliever risk.
Jordan Westburg, Baltimore Orioles 2B/3B (#RDPA-JWE): Westburg took a huge step forward in 2024, specifically with his power output. There’s just so many young, talented Orioles hitters and I’m not sure Westburg does enough to stand out.
Kyle Manzardo, Cleveland Guardians 1B/DH (#RDPA-KM): A hit-over-power 1B/DH that has more real-world impact than hobby impact.
Lawrence Butler, Oakland Athletics OF (#RDPA-LB): 22 home runs, 18 stolen bases, and a 130 wRC+. I’ve said this before, but it’s worth repeating — I love what I’m seeing from Lawrence Butler but hate that he’s on the A’s.
Marco Luciano, San Francisco Giants SS (#RDPA-ML): Similar to Lawlar in that Luciano has a ton of raw power but has been plagued by injuries for too long.
Masyn Winn, St. Louis Cardinals SS (#RDPA-MW): Hit-over-power shortstop with good speed that popped 15 home runs in 2024.
Noelvi Marte, Cincinnati Reds 3B (#RDPA-NM): Former top prospect who received an 80-game suspension after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug.
Nolan Schanuel, Los Angeles Angels 1B (#RDPA-NS): Good hitter but doesn’t hit for enough power to be an impact. Also has the misfortune of playing for the Angels.
Ronny Mauricio, New York Mets 2B (#RDPA-RM): Mauricio missed all of 2024 after suffering a torn ACL. He has above-average power and speed, but his contact rate is a problem.
Sal Frelick, Milwaukee Brewers OF (#RDPA-SF): A more extreme version of Jung-Hoo Lee in that Frelick has elite speed and contact ability but zero power.
Tyler Black, Milwaukee Brewers 1B/DH (#RDPA-TB): Black is Manzardo with surprising speed, but even that is a tough sell in the hobby.
Tyler Soderstrom, Oakland Athletics 1B (#RDPA-TS): Mashes fastballs but hasn’t shown he can do damage against breaking and offspeed pitches. Also, it’s the A’s.
Victor Scott II, St. Louis Cardinals OF (#RDPA-VS): Scott looks like an elite speed and defense guy you’d use as a pinch runner or defensive replacement, not a full-time centerfielder based on his offensive performance thus far.
Zack Gelof, Oakland Athletics 2B (#RDPA-ZG): Played well in 2023 (132 wRC+) but had a disappointing season in 2024 (82 wRC+). Not sure there’s enough here to get excited about.
