I’m not sure I’d consider these great candidates to buy and hold, as the gains don’t appear to be worth the buy-in price. These feel like they are made to be opened, and that’s likely the approach you should take if you’re buying.
That brings us to singles. What can a look at recent sales of 2023 Topps Luminaries Baseball singles tell us about the potential high water mark for 2024?
A 1/1 Aaron Judge Auto Relic card sold for $3,500. A Hit Kings Dual Patch Auto Book of Derek Jeter and Aaron Judge 1/1 sold for around $2,000, as did Shohei Ohtani Home Run Kings Auto /3. A Shohei Ohtani Mound Masters Patch Auto /15 in PSA sold for $1,525, and an Ohtani Hit Kings Auto Patch sold for $1,500.
Perhaps some of the higher-end hits aren’t being sold on eBay, or at least haven’t sold yet. For example, a Roberto Clemente 1/1 Auto Bat Knob book is available for $50,000. Several other cards are on offer for around $5,000, and it wouldn’t surprise me if others pop up worth somewhere between now and then.
So, there is undoubtedly a chance here at big hits and huge ROI, but with only one card per box, the odds are stacked against it. These boxes are a high-priced lottery ticket, plain and simple.
