Who is Michael Harris II?

Michael Harris II, a Georgia native, was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the third round of the 2019 draft. Despite being drafted out of high school, he quickly climbed the minor league ladder and made his major league debut in late May of 2022.

In 114 big league games that year, he hit .297/.339/.514 , good for an OPS of .853 and OPS+ of 133. He added 19 home runs and 20 stolen bases. The combination of offense, speed, and strong defense made Harris worth 5.4 WAR that season.

He won the NL Rookie of the Year award. In August of that year, he signed an 8-year, $72 million extension with the Braves to keep him in Atlanta long-term.

The 2023 season wasn’t quite as strong for Harris, as he battled injuries and slumps for the first two months. He seemed to right the ship starting in June, however, and finished the year with a line of .293/.331/.477 for an OPS of .808 and 114 OPS+. While not quite as strong as his rookie season, Harris was still worth a very solid 3.4 WAR.

Harris remains only 22, and the two seasons offer a great foundation to build upon. The combination of power and speed at a premium defensive position is tantalizing. Harris is far from a perfect player, however, with strikeout totals over 100 in each of his first two seasons and K/BB rates around 4:1.

That being said, Harris is still very young for a player with two-plus seasons under his belt, and with a long-term contract on a very good team, he’s got lots of runway to have a very good career.

Michael Harris II Rookie Cards

Despite being only 22 years old and in his second major league season, Michael Harris II has already appeared on over 1,800 cards, according to the Trading Card Database (TCDB.com). That number will continue to rise as more 2023 products get released.

Despite making his big league debut in 2022, and having his true rookie cards in 2023, he appears on cards as far back as 2018. This makes for a lot of pre-rookie cards to chase for Harris II.

The top 5 Michael Harris II rookie cards & early career cards

With over 1,800 cards already out there, according to the Trading Card Database (TCDB.com), any top 5 list is going to be subjective and incomplete. You’ll likely disagree with the cards listed, the order, and think some of the omissions are crazy. And that’s OK! Share your Top 10 with us at card_lines on X (Twitter).

For our list, we’re focusing on base cards (and one autograph). Know that most of these have harder-to-find parallel versions, image variations, and the like that offer tougher chases and higher prices.

In theory, this list could just be five variations of his best card, but that wouldn’t offer us much variety or fun, now would it?

The 1st Bowman Auto

The most desirable and valuable of Michael Harris II early cards is his 1st Bowman card in 2020. In addition to having the coveted “1st Bowman” moniker, it also has an autograph.

PSA has graded the card just over 750 times, with over 60% of those in PSA 10 slabs. That means it’s not so rare that you won’t find one, but not so plentiful as to hurt card values. In a PSA 10, these sell for between $200-300.

If you’re going to buy only one Michael Harris II early card, this is probably the one to grab. If you’re looking for a tougher version, there are a rainbow of parallels available, although low serial numbers are obviously potentially tough to find on the secondary market.

The true Michael Harris rookie cards

According to the Trading Card Database (TCDB.com), Michael Harris II has appeared on 1,300 variations of cards in 2023 alone. This means that there’s a Harris RC for just about any taste and budget. The PSA counts are all over the map here, and the base cards are quite affordable.

The 2023 Bowman card has a low population below 120 total PSA graded copies, with less than 50% PSA 10s. Yet it still sells for only around $20 in a PSA 10. The more premium 2023 Bowman Chrome has only been graded 16 times, with all but two in PSA 10 slabs. The few recent comps have been in the $30-40 range, very affordable for such a low-pop rookie card.

The 2023 Topps rookie card is the highest PSA population card on our list, by a significant margin. This keeps the price in check, with recent comps only between $15-20. The 2023 Topps Chrome again offers a premium offering, with a much lower PSA population, although higher than the Bowman cards. Expect to pay $25-35 for one of these.

Other Harris rookie cards worth looking at include the vintage-themed Topps 206, Allen & Ginter, Topps Heritage, and Topps Archives. If you prefer the shiny, there’s Bowman Platinum, Topps Chrome Black, Topps Chrome Sapphire, Topps Stadium Club, Topps Finest, Topps Cosmic Chrome, and Topps Chrome Update.

Other early Michael Harris II cards of note

Michael Harris II had his first card appearance the year before he was drafted, appearing in the 2018 Leaf Perfect Game National Showcase product while still in high school. I couldn’t find any evidence of PSA having graded any of these.

In 2019, it was Panini’s turn to produce a Harris pre-rookie, with the 2019 Panini Elite Extra Edition, which is serial numbered out of only 999 copies.

The 2021 Bowman Draft Chrome is not a 1st Bowman (FBC) or a Rookie Card (RC), making it a bit of an in-between card.  That keeps the PSA population on the lower side but keeps demand in check a bit.

With about 500 cards produced before his 2023 rookie cards, you’ll find lots of options for early-career Michael Harris II cards. PSA populations tend to be low, but raw prices are reasonable as many of these cards are unlicensed products from the likes of Leaf and Panini.

Investment thoughts on Michael Harris II

Now that we’ve explored a few of the many Michael Harris II rookie and early career cards out there, the big question is: Are Michael Harris cards a good investment?

Based on having two above-average seasons before the age of 23, the fact that he plays a premium position, and that he plays on a team that seems to be a perennial contender for the foreseeable future, I think there’s some upside here.

Obviously, there’s risk when investing in any young player, with injury and regression always potential issues. That being said, while Harris is an imperfect player, his combination of power and speed at a premium position shows promise.

The low cost, and in most cases, low PSA populations, will help here. You can pick up a nice smattering of Harris rookie cards for not big money. Keep an eye on PSA population counts, and target those cards that are desirable but have low PSA pops.

Michael Harris II is an exciting young player who’s already got a couple of good seasons under his belt going into his age 23 season. He looks to have a bright future, yet his rookie and early career cards are highly affordable.
