What You Need To Know About The New Allen & Ginter Lineup Card Relics

2024 Allen & Ginter Lineup Card Relics

The sports card hobby has a long and storied history, with many of the iconic vintage cards of the past having a special place in the hobby. The modern hobby is far different than it was 100, 50, or even 30 years ago.

The innovation in the hobby over the last few decades has moved at breakneck speed and has produced some collectibles that would have been unimagined in decades past.

2024 saw the introduction of another chapter in this long story of hobby innovation, with the introduction of Lineup Card Relics and Autographed Lineup Card Relics in 2024 Topps Allen & Ginter.

But what are relic cards? And what are these new Lineup Card Relics all about? And are these worth chasing?

What are relic cards?

Relic cards (sometimes called memorabilia cards) are sports cards that include a piece of memorabilia, often game-used, from the player or player pictured.

When the first relic cards appeared starting in 1996, they took the hobby by storm, taking the standard base card/insert/parallel dynamic and adding another hit. It feels quaint today, but plain white uniform jersey, unnumbered relic cards were the hits that were driving hobby box sales.

From those early cards with small pieces of jerseys, the relic card has expanded to multi-color jersey pieces to jumbo logo swatches to patch and laundry tag relics.

Beyond jersey cards, recent years have seen relics created from pants, bases, cleats, baseballs, and even baseball bats, including bat knobs and nameplates.

Unnumbered, vanilla uniform relics don’t really get collectors too excited these days, but when you start looking at relics that are serial numbered to low numbers, contain large swatches or alternative materials like bats, shoes, and bases, they get more appealing.

Add in an autograph, and you have a sought-after collectable with significant value. Of course, we’ve also seen a rise in manufactured relics, which contain a piece of material that is not associated with a player or worn in a game. These tend to have negligible value.

The key to collecting relic cards new or old is to know what you’re looking at and understand what you’re buying, how rare it is, and what recent comps look like.

2024 Allen & Ginter Lineup Card relics & autographed relics

Just as those first relic cards almost 30 years ago were a great innovation, so does the innovation continue to this day. For an example of this, look at the MLB Rookie Debut Patch cards that have been popular hits over the last few seasons.

That innovative spirit continues in 2024, with the introduction of Lineup Card Relics and Autographed Lineup Card Relics in 2024 Topps Allen & Ginter.

Lineup Card Relics are what they sound like, relic cards that contain a piece of a lineup card from an MLB game, with the name of the player typically featured on the card. These are different than many relics as they are not actually worn, used, or even touched by the player pictured.

They are unique, however, and come from a major league game. Some of these relic cards are just printed, but others have ink marks and other notes from coaches and managers.

2024 Allen & Ginter Lineup Card Relics consists of 80 cards, which are seeded 1:37,741 hobby, and 1:156,816 fat packs. The checklist consists of a mix of big names, rookies, and perhaps lesser known or chased players.

Autographed Lineup Card Relics take the lineup cardrelic concept and add an autograph. The additional of the ink makes these an even more appealing collectible, with some potential for strong value on the resale market.

2024 Allen & Ginter Autographed Lineup Card Relics consists of 90 cards, seeded 1:34,219 hobby, and 1:156,816 fat packs. It is noteworthy that the autographs on these cards are sticker autographs, which are less desirable than on-card autographs.

Due to the nature of the lineup card relic and the card production process, the use of sticker autographs is not surprising. It will be interesting to see if future lineup card relics are produced with on-card autographs or not.

Should You Worry About The Sticker Vs. On-Card Autograph Sports Card Debate?

Are lineup card relics worth chasing?

As with most hits in modern products, a number of things affect the collectability, and therefore the value, of a particular card. The player pictured is a big component. The print run. How they look. And yes, how innovative the particular card is also plays a part.

This suggests that the Lineup Card Relics, which are seeded a tough 1:37,741 hobby packs, have some real potential to be chased by collectors. The fact that they are new and different help back this suggestion, as a look at the popularity of the MLB Debut Patches backs up.

Of course, cards featuring the most popular players and rookies will demand higher prices than those of lesser known and collected players.

The Autographed Lineup Card Relics, which adds a sticker autograph to the lineup card relic, should be even more popular, as collectors love autographs and these are a tough hit at 1: 34,219 hobby packs.

Final thoughts (for now) on 2024 Allen & Ginter Lineup Card Relics

2024 Topps Allen & Ginter Lineup Card Relics and Autographed Lineup Card Relics appear to be the next chapter in popular innovation within the hobby, and look poised to be a popular hit with collectors and have the potential to be rather valuable.

The bigger names will be more in demand than lesser known names, but these should be a popular and valuable hit in A&G.
