2024 Topps Update Baseball release date & release format

The release date for 2024 Topps Update Baseball is scheduled for October 16, 2024 (subject to change). Pre-orders are now available on Topps.com, until they sell out.

Hobby Boxes of 2024 Topps Update Baseball contains 20 packs per box. Each hobby pack includes 12 cards per pack. Each hobby case contains 12 hobby boxes per case. Hobby boxes contain one autograph or one relic card per box. Pre-sales on Topp.com for Hobby boxes is $87.99.

Hobby Jumbo Boxes of 2024 Topps Update Baseball contain 10 packs per box. Each hobby jumbo pack contains 40 card per box. There are six hobby jumbo boxes per hobby jumbo case.

Each hobby jumbo box contains one autograph and two relic cards per box. Pre-sales on Topps.com of hobby jumbo boxes are for $194.99.

Hobby Value Boxes (Blasters) of 2024 Topps Update Baseball contains 7 packs per box. Each blaster pack contains 12 cards per pack. Blaster boxes have no guaranteed hits but can contain exclusive royal blue base card parallels.

At press time Topps is only selling blasters online as part of a bundle, with a hobby box and a blaster for a combined $109.99.

Other formats, including Fat Packs, Hangers, and Super Boxes are expected to also be released.

2024 Topps Update Baseball base set & design

The base set of 2024 Topps Update Baseball contains 350 cards. Regarding the checklist, collectors will find “cards of familiar faces in new uniforms, brand new rookies celebrating their recent MLB debuts, and cards capturing the festivities of the MLB All-Star Game and Home Run Derby.”

Stars in new uniforms include Shohei Ohtani, Juan Soto, and Joey Votto. Top rookies on the checklist include Jackson Holliday, Wyatt Langford, Jackson Merrill, Jackson Chourio and Paul Skenes, among others, plus “Rookie Debut” cards for an even longer list.

From a design perspective, these continue the design from the other Topps Flagship offerings from 2024, Series 1 and Series 2.

Topps Black Gold throws back to the 1990’s Black Gold inserts with 25 cards of stars and rookies of today with a few all-time greats sprinkled in.  Includes Blue, Black, Gold, Red, and Platinum Parallels.

Mystical features 50 cards of players whose talent raises to the level of the otherworldly. Includes Blue, Black, Gold, Red, and Platinum Parallels.

Relics fall two per jumbo box, while hobby boxes feature an autograph or relic card per box.

Major League Materials consists of 40 players, each with a relic embedded in the card. The checklist consists of current stars and rookies. Black, Gold, Red, and Platinum parallels also available.

1989 Topps Relics adds a relic to 45 of the 1989 Topps insert cards. Black, Gold, Red, and Platinum parallels are also available.

Rising Rookie Relics provides relics of 40 rookies from across the game. Black, Gold, Red, and Platinum parallels are also available.

Own the Name Relics are exclusive to hobby and hobby jumbo and are a tough pull.

All-Star Stitches brings us fabric from the 2024 All-Star Game. Black, Gold, Red, and Platinum parallels are also available.

All-Star Stitches Dual feature two All-Stars with two relics. Combos include teammates, the same position, and more.

All Star Stitches Triple brings us three all-stars and three relics per card.

Baseball Stars Autographs features 55 autographs from the base set, predominantly of rookies. Black, Gold, Red, and Platinum parallels are also available.

Other than 2022, prices aren’t anything to write home about. With the right rookie class, this might be something worth hanging onto, but I’m not sure they’re worth stockpiling.

What about in terms of singles? What can recent sales of 2023 Topps Update Baseball tell us about the potential for 2024?

The high water mark was a Red Parallel /10 Dual Auto of Shohei Ohtani and Ronald Acuna Jr., which sold for $1,800. An Ohtani Black Gold Auto /10 of Ohtani sold for around $1,500. PSA 10 copies of a Gunnar Henderson Orange Mojo /25 and an Adley Rutschman Goldin Mirror SSP sold for around $1,300 each.

For a low-cost, flagship box, the potential for hits worth close to or exceeding $1,000 is pretty impressive. While the odds of one of these big hits are long, there’s a chance, which adds to the enjoyment of 2024 Topps Update Baseball.

Pros

• 2024 Topps Update Baseball feels like a fitting 3^rd chapter to the 2024 Topps Flagship trilogy, with some promising rookies and a fun mix of parallels, inserts, and other hits.
• Despite the low buy-in price and long odds, the potential for some fairly strong hits should make this an exciting break.

Cons

• I mentioned the odds of a big hit are long, didn’t I? These should be a fun break, with any ROI is likely to be incremental, not a huge hit.
• Topps is likely to produce, let’s say, a lot of these cards. That means cards other than the rarest of the rare will struggle to have real value.
• Rookies are great, but how will this checklist look in five or ten years? Only time will tell, but young players can break your heart.  
• In 2024, is anyone happy if their hit from a hobby box is a relic card?
