2024 Topps design

After much anticipation, the 2024 Topps Baseball design was revealed on January 11th in a first look posted from the Topps X account.

The card comes with an oversized border and features an “electric” team with the team name in the upper right-hand corner and the team logo in the upper left. The top portion of the card has some black in the border, which may make the card harder to grade but the overall reaction has been positive.

2024 Topps Series 1 base set & design

The base set for 2024 Topps Series 1 consists of 350 cards, 20 cards more than the last few years. The checklist consists of a mix of major league veterans and rookies. The 2024 rookie class has the potential to be a good one. Subsets will include Future Stars, League Leaders and team cards.

Special 2024 Topps Series 1 “First Card” Stamp

There are special 1/1 cards in 2024 Topps Series 1 that you will want to keep a close eye on.

According to The Collectibles Guru, every card in the series has one card stamped with “First Card.” As the stamp implies, if you see a card with this stamp, it means it was the first card printed. It is not known whether there is a seriel number, so you will want to be on the look out for the “First Card” stamp.

As of February 19th, there are no reports that any of these cards have been hit yet.

Topps 2024 Series 1 First Card Stamp Missing

Apparently there is an issue with some First Stamp cards. According to Topps, certain First Stamp cards are missing the “First Stamp.” Kind of important, huh?

So without the First Stamp, how can collectors tell they should have a First Stamp card? They can look on the back of the card and see a 1/1 signifier. Did you get a First Stamp card without the signifier? Here’s what you can do:

2024 Topps Series 1 parallels & variations

As with prior years, parallels offer a rainbow of options for collectors to chase. These include several retail-exclusive parallels.

Parallels include:

  • Royal Blue – 1:10 retail packs (retail only)
  • Yellow – 2 per hanger box (hanger boxes only)
  • Gold – /2024
  • Blue Foil – /999
  • Purple Foil – /799
  • Green Foil – /499
  • Orange Foil – /299
  • Red Foil – /199

In addition, Blaster boxes will come with exclusive holiday-themed parallels. This is similar to how 2023 Topps Update included Christmas/Winter-themed parallels. In this case, the holiday Topps is celebrating is Easter, so we’ll get some Easter/Spring themed parallels.

These include:

  • Holiday
  • Eggs – 1:21 packs
  • Rabbits – 1:56 packs
  • Flowers – /50
  • Umbrella – /10
  • Watering Can – /5
  • Roses – 1/1

Each card in the set gets a True Photo Variation. These could be called “Just Photo” variations, as cards have all the card’s design elements removed, so just the photo remains. It’s an interesting idea, and it will be fun to see how collectors react.

Pros:

  • The rookie class for 2024 Topps Series 1 looks promising. Stay tuned to Cardlines for more in-depth coverage of the rookie class once the checklist is available.
  • Flagship Topps sets are among the most collected in the hobby, and the earliest release of the year, which means the rookie cards tend to have solid value compared to some later releases.
  • Topps retail has some exclusive parallels and inserts, and lots of formats, to liven up a break.
  • The design of 2024 Topps has been largely well-received and is quite distinct.

Cons:

  • While Topps Flagship rookie cards tend to hold solid value, they do tend to trail behind more premium offerings, including Chrome.
  • The chances of better autograph hits are much lower in Topps retail products.
  • Hobby Jumbos are the only packaging format that guarantees an autograph hit.

Final thoughts (for now) on 2024 Topps Series 1

The release of 2024 Topps brings the unofficial starts of both a new baseball and baseball card season and much-needed hints of spring to an otherwise cold and gray February. With a promising rookie class and a distinct design, 2024 Topps should excite collectors.
