From a galaxy far, far away comes the latest Topps Chrome Star Wars release. This year, the legacy continues as over 4 decades of Star Wars media, including Andor and The Mandalorian, is integrated into the checklist.
2023 marks the first stand-alone Chrome release for Star Wars, as prior releases were tied into a different brand or a specific media property such as 2021 Topps Star Wars Legacy.

Star Wars card products have been a fan-favorite since their inception in 1977, the same year the first movie came out.
Topps produced the initial set and has produced every major set over the past 46 years. O-Pee-Chee released 3 series of cards in 1977, but they didn’t approach the popularity of Topps and no more O-Pee-Chee Star Wars cards were released.
After the successful first release of cards, Topps followed up with new releases to commemorate the new movies The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi in 1980 and 1983, respectfully.
After a decade of no Star Wars content, Topps released the Star Wars Galaxy brand in 1993. Galaxy would also receive a release in 1994, 1995, as well as consecutive releases from 2009-2012 before the latest Galaxy release in 2018.
Card production picked up in the late 90s and early 2000s as the prequel trilogy was set to begin. Between 1995 and 2005, Topps released a whopping 25 Star Wars card products. Topps continued to regularly release products as new Star Wars content was produced, bringing us to the 2023 Chrome release.

With 2023 Topps Star Wars Chrome, Topps decided to provide an emphasis on specific characters instead of specific themes or event, bringing this product more in-line with other successful non-sports sets like Disney 100 Years of Wonder.
As a Chrome release, expect plenty of refractor parallels and inserts. The main chase pieces of Star Wars Chrome are the autographs, with authentic signatures from the actor or actress behind the character. Some of the big names include Harrison Ford, Ewan McGregor, and Samuel L. Jackson.
Unfortunately for Mandalorian fans, Pedro Pascal autographs didn’t the cut make it into the release, though the frequent appearance of Grogu might make up for his absence for Mandalorian fans.
The set saw an initial release on May 4th, also known as Star Wars day, with a full-release on May 24th.

Star Wars Chrome only received a hobby box release which quickly sold out online. Each hobby box includes:

There are 77 cards across 4 autograph sets, along with a slew of parallels.

By far the largest auto set at 55 cards, it includes a wide variety of characters ranging from Ahmed Best as Jar Jar Binks to Daisy Ridley as Rey.
Dual Autographs highlights different duos across the Star Wars Universe, though the main one fans will want to watch out for is Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader and Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Only 8 cards make up this set and it has two short print parallels.
This short print insert shows the first moment these characters are seen on the screen. It consists of 10 cards with no parallels.
As you might be able to guess, Triple Autographs includes three characters tied together in some way. It’s comprised of 4 cards with characters from Rogue One, Solo, Episode 7, and the Book of Boba Fett.
Inserts are made up of at least 85 cards across 7 different sets. Card counts and artist lists for the Sketch and Manga Sketch sets have not been revealed.

Following the same principles as the autograph variation, First Appearances shows characters first time on-screen. It includes two parallels and a roster twice as large as the autograph equivalent with 20 base cards.
The universe’s most popular baby receives his own set of 20 cards with 5 refractor parallels. Each card highlights a different event for Grogu during his journey across The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.
One of three drawn insert sets, there is no official release of artists names but we know there’s 15 cards with 5 parallels.
Monikers provides an emphasis on the nicknames throughout Star Wars, such as “Snips” for Ahsoka Tano.
Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Episode 6, this set features 10 cards of some of the iconic characters from the Original Trilogy.
2023 Star Wars Chrome has the potential to be a defining release in the card saga from a galaxy far, far away. The pivot to a character-focused release instead of the usual emphasis on a movie or a niche brand was an excellent move by Topps.
With rumors of a new trilogy on the horizon, hopefully, we’ll be seeing similar releases with new characters in the future.
