What Do We Know About The Disney Lorcana TCG?
Disney Lorcana was officially announced at the D23 Expo on September 9th and was released in the fall of 2023. Lorcana is a trading card game similar to Magic: The Gathering or the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
The demand and hype for the product are continually on the rise. Here’s everything we know about Disney’s foray into the TCG genre.
What are Disney Lorcana Cards?
Disney Lorcana is a trading card game designed and published by Ravensburger. Ravensburger is well known for designing the Disney Villainous board game. However, this is their first attempt at creating a TCG.
They made it clear that the game will be accessible for new players but still intricate for veterans of the genre. As co-designer Ryan Miller put it at Gen Con 2023,
“We wanted a game where trading card gamers would find that kind of strategic depth, and the combos, and the synergies. But also a game that someone who’s never played a game like this before can pick it up, understand the concepts, and then get drawn in by the characters.”
Lorcana will have four expansion sets released each year, similar to other trading card games. The initial set, The First Chapter, was released in Fall 2023.
Shortly after release, Disney announced that Disney Lorcana: The Rise Of The Floodborn TCG would be released in late fall of 2023.
What playing Disney Lorcana is like
Disney Lorcana has gameplay remarkably similar to Magic: The Gathering; Players build a deck of cards with the goal of beating their opponent’s deck. Cards have various mechanics and stats, and decks are typically built about a specific playing style.
Disney Lorcana cards design
The aesthetic of The First Chapter Disney Lorcana cards is extremely pleasant. Each card features the original art of classic Disney characters. As collectibles, the cards capture the personality and style of beloved Disney characters. Fans absolutely appreciate seeing beautiful artwork on the cards. The bottom half of each card includes the character name, archetypes, special mechanics, and some flavor text. In the bottom left, you can see the illustrator of the card design on the middle right of the card.
For gameplay, cards include the cost to use the card in the top left and the combat values on the middle right of the card.
These cards are definitely nice pieces of eye candy, which has no doubt contributed to making them highly desirable for collectors.
As John Balen, the Vice President of Product Design at Disney, promised several months before the release, Lorcana does contain more original Disney artwork than any single product ever created. This demonstrates Disney’s commitment to creating an aesthetically pleasing card.
Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter checklist
The First Chapter of the Disney Lorcana TCG has 204 cards. Aside from these 204 cards are additional Enchanted cards, which are the top chase of the set.
Each card of the first 204 cards has a Foil version, which falls at one per pack unless in very lucky packs that have Enchanted cards. Foil cards hold slightly more value than their non-foil counterparts due to their scarcity. However, they serve the same function when it comes to gameplay.
Collectors can find character cards of their favorite characters from classics, such as
- 101 Dalmations
- Alice in Wonderland
- Beauty and the Beast
- The Emperor’s New Groove
- The Lion King
- The Little Mermaid
- Mickey Mouse and Friends
- Peter Pan
- Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
- Winnie the Pooh
The Disney Lorcana TCG card list covers a lot of eras and decades of movie history. Like other trading card games, there are different mechanics and powers involved with game play, and some cards are stronger than others.
Additionally, there is also a rarity for the Disney Lorcana TCG. It’s depicted by the icon in the middle of the bottom strip.
Each Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter booster packs comes with:
- Common – 6
- Uncommon – 3
- Rare, Super Rare or Legendary – 2
- Foil or Enchanted – 1
Like other trading card games like Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering, there are different mechanics and powers involved with gameplay. Simply put, some cards are stronger than others.
Some cards were made available exclusively to participants of the D23 Expo for $49.95. These cards have a foil finish and a unique D23 symbol at the bottom and hold their value exceedingly well.
As stated by Ravensburger, the focus for the first expansion pack was on classic Disney characters. What this means is that collectors would have to look to future sets for cards from the likes of Pixar, Marvel, or Star Wars.
Several beloved Disney characters are available in this set. They include Rapunzel, Stitch, Elsa, Cruella de Vil, Maleficent, Robin Hood, Captain Hook, Mickey Mouse, Belle, and Tinker Bell.
