No need to find a baseball card auction near you. Today we’ll look at the top sports card auctions that you can access online from the major houses that close in September 2022.
The Collector Connection Post War Sports Cards & Memorabilia XVIII
This auction skews heavy towards baseball, although there are some vintage gems from basketball, football, hockey, boxing, and more mixed in.

The Collector Connection Auction items of note
The story of the Collector Connection auction really is autographs. The sheer number of vintage autographs available is really impressive, including some really exciting featured items.
Lot #1, the Framed Nov 3, 1998 ESPN the Magazine Vol. 1, Iss. 1 Autographed by Kobe Bryant, Eric Lindros, A-Rod and Kordell Stewart starts the auction off with a bang. Maybe you prefer 11/84 Issue #1 of Beckett Monthly Signed by Dr James Beckett, the magazine that started a collecting empire. Or perhaps 4/15/1974 Sports Illustrated 715 Cover Signed by Hank Aaron, which celebrates him setting the all-time career home run record.
And that’s just the magazines! There are Everlast Boxing Glove Signed by Muhammad Ali, a signed Joe DiMaggio bat, a signed 1957 Topps Ted Williams, and so many more.
There are complete sets, ranging from the classic Topps sets to some really cool oddball sets. There are beautiful vintage cards in various conditions, both graded and raw.
There’s a lot of goodness here, but I think my favorite item is the 1974 Laughlin Old-Time Black Stars Complete Set. We mentioned this set when we explored Negro League Cards, and while the artwork doesn’t stand up, the fact that these cards were even created was one of the first attempts to pay homage to the Negro Leagues.
Memory Lanes Inc. Summer Rarities Auction featuring Autographed Rarities
The title of this one says it all, with some really impressive items, especially autographs, that certainly can be defined as “rarities”.

Autograph rarities? How about a PSA 10 graded, single signed Babe Ruth baseball? Or a 1932 U.S. Caramel Babe Ruth w/ a PSA 9 Autograph? Or a Ruth signed paycheck?
Check out the variety of signed 1952 Topps cards in the auction, including Jackie Robinson, Mickey Mantle, and Willie Mays.
There are high grade unsigned vintage icons, including PSA 8 1954 Bowman Ted Williams and Willie Mays.
My favorite? I’ll go with Christy Mathewson Autographed 1912 “Pitching in a Pinch” First Edition Book – Signed “Christy Mathewson – June 10, 1912”. Mathewson, the most popular player of the first part of the 20th century, wrote a series of books about baseball. This signed first edition copy signed with a PSA 9 graded signature.

Goldin Auctions items of note
Goldin Auctions current auction starts on September 10th.
There are some incredibly high end football items in this offering. These include the 2020 Panini National Treasures Platinum NFL Shield #158 Justin Herbert Signed NFL Shield Rookie Card (#1/1) – BGS NM-MT+ 8.5, Beckett 10. How high will this one go?
Or perhaps the 2017 Panini National Treasures Rookie Patch Autograph (RPA) Black #161 Patrick Mahomes II Signed Patch Rookie Card (#2/5) – BGS MINT 9, Beckett 10? There are also high end rookie cards of Tom Brady, and Joe Burrow.
Is basketball more your thing? There are low-pop LeBron James rookie cards, and not one, but two James jerseys. There’s also a variety of different Michael Jordan offerings.
Baseball options? There are rookie cards of Nolan Ryan, Aaron Judge, and Wander Franco. If you’re a fan of Mike Trout, you’ll find a number of 2009 Bowman Chrome RC’s in high grades.
My favorite item? The 1914 Polo Grounds Game Complete Set (30) – Featuring Nine PSA-Graded Examples, Including Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Shoeless Joe Jackson. A 108 year old set featuring a number of graded Hall of Famers. Pretty sweet.

The headline here is the infamous Tom Brady’s Last Pre-Retirement Touchdown Football. If you like infamous, check out the Evander Holyfield Fight Worn Gloves from Infamous Mike Tyson “Bite Fight”.
There’s a signed 1952 Topps Mantle, Michael Jordan RC’s, jerseys, and autographs, and more autographs. Championship rings. Classic vintage cards. Photos. And that’s just to start. There’s a lot of goodness here.
My favorite item? That’s a tough one, but I’m going with this item – Extraordinary Gil Hodges Handwritten Letter to Ty Cobb Asking for Batting Help! (PSA) – “I Would Appreciate Anything You Could Tell Me in This Matter Mr. Cobb and I am Willing to Try Anything That Might Help Me Improve”. I don’t know if any reply was sent, or if Cobb’s advice helped, but Hodges is now in the Hall of Fame.

Classic Auctions items of note
The hockey items are the headliners here. Stan Mikita’s 1972 Canada-Russia Series Team Canada Game Jersey is an exciting piece of international hockey history.
There are cards, of course, but memorabilia makes up a majority of this auction. These include pucks, autographs, jerseys and equipment, both modern and vintage.
There are Super Bowl rings from the 1972 Dolphins, 1973 Dolphins, and 1998 Broncos. There are World Series rings from the 1992 and 1993 Toronto Blue Jays.
Racing fans may be interested in items from The Jacques Villeneuve Personal Collection. Big 10 hockey fans will want to check out The Red Berenson Personal Collection.
My favorite item? I’ll go with one of the few baseball lots, the Carlton Fisk and Jim Rice Signed Boston Red Sox Jerseys. This Red Sox fan thinks those Hall of Fame Red Sox jerseys would look cool in my closet.
