Sports Card Grading Trends Guide

Our sports card grading trends guide aims to provide you with real-time information on where our hobby is headed. We got most of this information from Gem Rate. They do a great job gathering, grading data, and analyzing it.

Cardlines will update this page every month with new grading data.

PSA is the grader of choice for Pokemon collectors. As that TCG increases in popularity, Pokemon is becoming the most popular category for submissions to the biggest company. They are also now the most common cards submitted to Beckett for grading.

However, that does not mean that sports grading is becoming less popular. On the contrary, sports cards continue to dominate submissions to CSG and SGC. Indeed, both receive very few submissions in the TCG category.

The Numbers

Let’s analyze the last year of data and see what we can make of it. All numbers presented here are in thousands. The specific rankings are of PSA cards only, unless indicated otherwise.

The 1999 Pokemon Game Charizard cards are massively popular. Look for a holo on eBay.

With SGC cards becoming more popular, it may be a good time to pick up some SGC 10 cards. Look at their current values on eBay.

After a relatively weak April, May saw PSA submissions go up by 8% overall. Here are the submissions to the big graders during this month. All figures are in the thousands.

1999 Pokemon Game has long held the spot as the most popular set in grading. Look for raw cards to grade on eBay.

All grading was up in May, often by a significant amount. But the highest growth by far was in Trading Card Game (TCG) cards. PSA showed an increase of no less than 92% in grading TCG cards, with Beckett also showing a significant 42% increase. And TCG cards shot past basketball and baseball cards to become the most popular category.

What about the big sports? Soccer and basketball were down, which makes sense because their seasons ended. But other downturns are more puzzling. For example, baseball went lower just as it was getting into the swing of things. But golf, wrestling, UFC, and F1 all showed strong growth.

All five sets are Pokemon this month. The top sports sets are 2020 Panini Prizm and Mosaic football. The popularity of Pokemon is across the board in other grading companies as well. Those submissions are up 92% at PSA, 42% at Beckett, and 15% at CGC.

The absolute domination of the Charizard cards continues. The 2020 Pokemon Swsh Black Star Promo Charizard is now easily the most gemmed card of all. Indeed, seven out of the top ten cards are Pokemon cards, shoving out a few sports cards from the April list.

April saw an overall drop in submissions from the high of March, by -16% overall. So as you can see, SGC is now firmly entrenched in second place, with Beckett languishing at third.

PSA had its all-time best month in March, grading just short of one million cards in a single month. Quite an accomplishment. Aside from that, the big news for March was the performance of SGC. The grading company had an all-time submissions record of 103,000. All in all, March 2022 was a banner month for grading.

No surprise at the top of the card charts, with the two strong Charizard cards at the top. However, two of the other cards are quite interesting. January saw PSA continue its effort to slog through the backlog, which at this point sat at 6 million cards or so. With few new submissions, the company remained at a steady pace with 775,680 cards overall. A reasonably similar number to the previous month.

After a long run of Pokemon domination, basketball returned to first place in January. However, it would not last for long. Another interesting number is the impressive growth of F1 cards, with no less than a 50% increase.

Although it is the baseball offseason, the top 5 are full of baseball prospects. However, glancing at the names reveals that these were hot prospects a year ago. So once again, it’s evidence of the massive backlog PSA (6.7 million at the start of the month) was facing at the time.

Despite the holidays, December was a month of increased capacity for PSA. The company graded 777,219 for an increase of 6% in grading from November. At the time, there was concern that PSA was not grading quickly enough despite expanding facilities. But, as we now know, there was no reason for concern. By mid-2022, they would eliminate most of the backlog.

PSA managed to grade 734,944 cards over November. That was a healthy sign of increased capacity, reflecting a 15% increase over October. It turned out that the fall in output was merely a blip and part of an adjustment leading to greater future grading capacity by PSA.

October was the first month TCG was the top submitted category. Indeed, this month began a run of dominance that the Pokemon and Magic: The Gathering brands have maintained since. It is incredible how much grading, and the entire hobby, have changed over the last year. Back in July 2021, basketball and baseball ruled supreme. Jordan was the most graded player, and the thousands were still grading junk wax cards. Pokemon was popular but overshadowed by the most significant sports. Meanwhile, F1 and UFC were barely blips in the rankings.

Cut to mid-2022, and Pokemon seems to have completely taken over. It is now the most popular category. The 1999 Pokemon Game is consistently the most popular set, and Charizard gets graded more often than any athlete. F1 and UFC cards have grown exponentially, while the big sports have basically stagnated.
