2024 Onyx Vintage Baseball Checklist: A Cheap Break Without A Lot Of Upside

2024 Onyx Vintage Baseball

Some products check several boxes at the same time. Vintage feel? Check. Prospect focus? Also, check. Reasonably priced break? Check. Lots of ink? Yup.

You have quite a thing when all that is an unlicensed product from one of the newer card companies.

2024 Onyx Vintage Baseball checks all the boxes above. It’s a lot of things, but what are the details?

What are the hits? And do all those things add up to a product worth breaking?

2024 Onyx Vintage Baseball

2024 Onyx Vintage Baseball base set & design

We don’t know how many cards are in the base set of 2024 Onyx Vintage Baseball. What we do know is that the checklist is predominantly prospect-driven.

This includes not just your standard minor-league prospects and recent draft picks (including Jackson Chourio, Jaison Chourio, and Ethan Holliday), but also draft prospects and college players. You’ll also find many major league stars, including NL Rookie of the Year Corbin Carroll and NL MVP Freddie Freeman.

As an unlicensed product, you won’t find team names or logos on 2024 Onyx Vintage Baseball cards. The lack of licensing keeps prices in check but also reigns in potential resale value.

2024 Onyx Vintage Baseball parallels

While details aren’t yet available on exact offerings, we know that 2024 Onyx Vintage Baseball contains a variety of parallels, which average five per box.

2024 Onyx Vintage Baseball autographs

Autographs are a big part of the draw of 2024 Onyx Vintage Baseball. All autographs are signed on-card with hobby boxes having four per box and mega boxes 10 per box (or maybe 6, depending on which source you believe).

  • Yellow Bordered (hobby only)
  • Aqua Bordered – /150 (hobby only)
  • Blue Bordered – /99 (hobby only)
  • Orange Bordered – /75 (mega only)
  • Purple Bordered – /35 (hobby only)
  • Green Bordered – /50 (mega only)
  • Red Bordered – /25 (mega only)
  • Silver Border Inscribed – /10

Dual autographs are also randomly inserted.

2024 Onyx Vintage Baseball value

2024 Onyx Vintage Baseball is a mix of tomorrow’s stars on a design that feels like it’s from yesteryear. But is this hit-driven, unlicensed product a good candidate to buy and hold raw? Let’s see what recent comps from hobby boxes from the last few years can tell us.

YearRecent Hobby Box Comp
2024$125
2023$50
2022$35-50
2021$35-50

Format and MSRP changes in Onyx Vintage mean we’re not comparing apples to oranges.

What the table can tell us is that these boxes have not historically held value well, regardless of the original sale price. These are low-cost, unlicensed boxes that have some ink. These are designed to scratch the itch to break cards rather than as a long-term investment.

What about singles? A look at recent sales of 2023 Onyx Vintage singles suggests that there is some potential upside here. The high water mark was an Elly De La Cruz Green Ink (/50) graded PSA 10, which sold for $250.

Other sales over $100 included Blue Ink autographs of Paul Skenes and Jackson Holliday. A good number of recent sales top $50, even raw, for some of the more limited autographs and those of big names.

2024 Onyx Vintage Baseball pros & cons

All products have pros and cons that need to be considered before spending your hard-earned hobby budget on them. 2024 Onyx Vintage Baseball is no different, but what should you consider before buying?

Pros

  • These are a relatively affordable box, with several guaranteed autographs per box. The chance for a fun break and some potential value are present, although not guaranteed.
  • The vintage-inspired designs are clean, and these feel a lot more like vintage cards than many of today’s slick and shiny releases. If you prefer Chrome, maybe this belongs under the “cons”.
  • Pulling a card of a highly touted prospect is always fun, whether it’s a rare parallel or autograph. This product offers a way to experience that without breaking the bank.

Cons

  • The lack of licensing dampers the excitement, and the potential value significantly. The prices here won’t rival a player’s 1st Bowman or 1st Bowman Auto.
  • If a focus is on prospects, this may be a bit of a “who ARE these guys?” exercise for a non-prospect hound.
  • Prospects will break your heart. A few years from now, a look at this checklist may show a handful of major leaguers, perhaps one or two standouts, and a whole lot of broken dreams.
  • While Onyx makes some nice cards, these lag far behind Topps in popularity and collectability, and likely trail even Panini and Leaf in that regard.

Final thoughts on 2024 Onyx Vintage Baseball

2024 Onyx Vintage Baseball is a lower-priced, unlicensed product driven by prospects and autographs. If you’re a prospect hound who doesn’t mind a lack of team names and logos, this product has the making of a fun break that offers some value.

If you prefer your players as more established and your cards licensed, or you’re looking purely from an investment standpoint, these may be a product to skip.
