Donruss Elite hobby boxes are running around $325.

This product’s typically a bit earlier release than this, and that’s also part of its popularity, but an appeal that’s absent this year. 

For the $325 price tag, you can expect to find 6 packs of 8 cards. This will include: 

• 2 Autographs
• 10 Inserts/Parallels
• 6 Base Or Base Rookie Parallels
• 2 Base Rookies

This set does a good job blending parallels and autographs with unique variations, but it is not a great product for rookie card collectors. With only two a box, you don’t have great odds of pulling the particular rookie you’re chasing.

That said, the low print run of rookies will help keep them in demand for a while, especially if you’re lucky enough to pull a Wemby (it just won’t be an autograph, as those aren’t found in this product. 

Also, note that despite the name, Donruss Elite is a bit less-chased than Donruss. The Donruss Rated Rookies have become iconic rookie cards. Donruss Elite doesn’t have an answer for that, but it is, at least, cheaper.

The big question: is 2023-24 Elite Basketball worth the box price?

Let’s assume you buy the box at $325. Most of the box’s value is in the rookie cards and autographs, and when there are only 2 rookie cards per box, it is tough to recoup your investment in the price of the box if you’re ripping the box. Especially without Wemby autos.

The takeaway? Be careful.

Unless you pull a monster low-numbered rookie, you won’t be making much money back on rookie cards, and that means your autographs will most likely have to be the moneymaker. 

If you’re buying to hold, be wary about that, too. Here’s the value of the last few years based on recent sales (as of 3/14/2023)
