2023 Topps Heritage High Number Brings Us One More Taste Of 1974

2023 Topps Heritage High Number brings us one more taste of 1974 before 2023 comes to an end. Updating things a bit from the earlier 2023 Topps Heritage release, we’ll get a look at players in new uniforms, rookies, and more.

But what will collectors find in this reasonably priced, throwback product? What are the hits? And are they worth a break?

2023 Topps Heritage High Number release date & release format

The release date for 2023 Topps Heritage High Number is scheduled for December 13, 2023 (subject to change).

Hobby Boxes of 2023 Topps Heritage High Number contain 24 packs per box. Each pack contains 9 cards per pack. There are 12 hobby boxes per case.

Hobby boxes contain one hit per box, with hits consisting of autographs, relics, or autographed relics.

Collectors will find one autograph or relic card per hobby box. Hobby boxes are pre-selling for around $65.

2023 Topps Heritage High Number base set & design

The 2023 Topps Heritage High Number base set consists of 225 cards. These are numbered #501-725, as an extension of the 2023 Topps Heritage set.

The checklist consists of players not included in Topps Heritage, traded players, and rookies. The first 200 cards are base cards, with the final 25 being short prints.

From a design perspective, just as the 2023 Topps Heritage set, these celebrate the classic 1974 Topps design.

2023 Topps Heritage High Number parallels, short prints, and variations

As mentioned already, the final 25 cards of the set are Short Print (SP). These are printed in “limited quantities” and are numbered #701-725.

Every card in the base set has Black Border parallels that are numbered 50 copies. There are also rare Flip Stock parallels that are limited to 5 copies each. These are printed “backward”, with the card photo on the matte side, and the back on the “glossy” side.

Fifty select cards from the base set get Mini variations that are limited to 100 copies. They also get Chrome versions. Chrome parallels include Refractors (/673), Silver Border (/373), Black Border (/73), Gold Border (/3), and Superfractors (1/1). Purple Hot Box Refractors also return exclusively to unmarked “hot boxes”.

Additional parallels include Missing Signature, Throwback Uniform, Action Image, Team Name, Color Swap, and potentially more.

In addition to standard relics, fans have a chance at autographed relics as well. These are tough pulls, but sure to be popular.

2023 Topps Heritage High Number autographs

While each hobby box contains either a relic or an autograph, we can assume that most collectors would prefer to pull an autograph. These are likely to be among the most sought-after cards in the product.

2023 Topps Heritage High Number value

2023 Topps Heritage High Number is a low-priced box with a lot to like. But how do these hold their value unopened? Let’s see what we can learn by looking at recent comps of hobby boxes from the last several years.

YearRecent Hobby Box Comp
2023$65
2022$45-55
2021$50
2020$45

Honestly, these prices make me think less about these as a solid option to buy-and-hold unopened, and more as a great option for a cheap ultra-modern break. I’ll be keeping these in mind for when I feel like ripping packs and don’t want to spend a lot.

In terms of singles, what can a look at recent sales of 2022 Topps Heritage High Number cards in PSA 10 slabs tell us? The high water mark for recent sales, even in a PSA 10 slab, is only $300.

That was for a Black and White Variation of Bobby Witt Jr. Prices drop quickly from there, with a $250 Spencer Torkelson auto and a Black Border Royce Clayton at $200.

Some of the biggest hits probably haven’t ended up on eBay, but the story here is modest value potential. Considering the low cost of entry, that’s probably just fine.

Final thoughts on 2023 Topps Heritage High Number

While the best hits are going to be tough pulls, that’s not what it’s all about with Heritage. Sure, the hits are cool, and some of them will likely be valuable and sought after.

But there’s also a lot of nostalgia in there, as well as a bit of fun. For a fun, low-cost break, you could do a lot worse than 2023 Topps Heritage High Number.
