2023 Topps Xpectations Baseball Sells Out In Record Time; Here’s Where You Can Buy

2023 Topps Xpectations Baseball is an online exclusive that has a premium look and feel and hit-driven nature, along with all serial numbered cards, Xpectations was a bit of a surprise drop by Topps exclusive to their website.

Early returns have prices up significantly from the drop price, a good indication that 2023 Topps Xpectations Baseball has been a big hit.

But what will collectors find inside 2023 Topps Xpectations Baseball? What are the hits? And are they worth a break?

2023 Topps Xpectations Baseball base set & design

The base set of 2023 Topps Xpectations Baseball consists of 75 total cards. This includes 55 standard player cards and two 10-card subsets, Clubhouse Complements and Providential Preludes.

Clubhouse Complements feature teammate pairings while Providential Preludes provide a look at legends of the game back in their rookie seasons.

The checklist generally skews towards young stars in the game, although the checklist does include a nice mix of players. None of the base cards have a print run over 99 copies, making even the base cards “hits” in a way.

From a design perspective, the cards have a premium feel, with thick 48-point stock, a stylized look, and a colorful design.

If the name Xpectations sounds familiar, it had a short run as a Topps basketball product in the early 2000’s.

2023 Topps Xpectations Baseball parallels

While the base set is already limited to 99 copies or fewer, there are several parallels included in the product that are even tougher pulls.

Parallels include:

  • Crackle Foil – /75
  • Iridescent Foil – /49
  • Circuit Citrus Foil – /25
  • Cyber Cyan Foil – /10
  • Plasma Pink Foil – /5
  • Motherboard Gold Foil – 1/1

2023 Topps Xpectations Baseball inserts

There is a single insert set available in 2023 Topps Xpectations Baseball. The late 1990’s and early 2000’s inspired Xtra-Large consists of 15 cards and are seeded 1:10 packs. These are numbered out of 25, with 1/1 Heather Gray parallels also available.

2023 Topps Xpectations Baseball autographs

2023 Topps Xpectations Baseball exhibits a fairly simple, straightforward product layout. The product has a single autograph set that closely resembles the base set in design.

The autograph set consists of 56 cards, with a mix of young stars (Adley Rutschman, Corbin Carroll), established stars (Jose Ramirez, Kyle Schwarber), and recent retired icons (Ichiro, Albert Pujols).

2023 Topps Xpectations Baseball value

2023 Topps Xpectations Baseball is undeniably a high-end, premium offering with a focus on serial numbers and hits. But is the online exclusive a good candidate to buy and hold unopened?

We don’t have any prior releases to compare to as this is the first Xpectations set in 20 years, and the first baseball offering ever. That being said the combination of a hit-driven, premium set that’s an online exclusive screams “break” to me over “buy and hold”.

Final thoughts on 2023 Topps Xpectations Baseball

2023 Topps Xpectations Baseball was a surprise online exclusive drop. There’s a lot to like with every card serial numbered and two autographs per box. Are they worth a break? I guess that depends on where prices go on unopened hobby boxes, which are already selling for about twice their drop price.

Will Xpectations exceed expectations and become a valuable new brand collectors anticipate every year? Or will this be a one-and-done?

Mike D

Mike D. has collected cards for over 35 years, since he bought his first pack of Topps at the corner store in 1987. His fandom,  collecting interests, and contributions to Cardlines center around baseball in general and the Baseball Hall of Fame specifically.

Mike's collecting focus is centered on graded cards, mostly rookie cards, of Hall of Famers and future Hall of Famers. Lately, he's been enjoying dabbling in graded minor league cards. A collector/investor with a "buy and hold" approach, Mike takes the long-term view with his collection.
