Few things in sports are as poetic, nor as explosive, as the sounds, site, and smells* of a baseball bat hitting a ball. The bat deserves to be celebrated, and given the focus of a new product.
That product is 2024 Leaf Lumber Baseball, which returns after a one-year hiatus as a premium unlicensed product that’s all about the bats.
But what will collectors find inside a box of 2024 Leaf Lumber Baseball? What is the release format? What are the hits? And are they worth a break?
*- Ted Williams used to talk about being able to smell the bat burning when fouling a high fastball straight back.
The 2024 Leaf Lumber Baseball release date is June 28, 2024 (subject to change).
Hobby boxes of 2024 Leaf Lumber Baseball contain one pack per box. Each pack contains four cards per pack.
Hobby boxes of 2024 Leaf Lumber baseball contain four hits per box, with each card containing a piece of bat memorabilia, an autograph, or both. That’s right, there is no base set. No jersey cards. Not even any leather. It’s all about the bats!
Hobby boxes of 2024 Leaf Lumber Baseball have been pre-selling for $200-$210 per box.
Many of the relic and autograph cards in the 2024 Leaf Lumber Baseball product also are available in parallel forms.
These include:
Production runs of the parallels differ slightly from subset to subset, but it looks like the highest print run is 40 and most are 25 or under, with many parallels being produced only in the single digits. This of course includes 1/1s and 2/2s.
Not every card in the set has parallel offerings, although many of those cards are 1/1s themselves.
2024 Leaf Lumber Baseball is an unlicensed product, so no team logos or team names here. The checklist consists of a handful of current superstars and greats from the past. From Aaron Judge to Richie Zisk, there’s a lot of variety here and the players included represent over 100 years of baseball history.
Cards range from large bat relics, to bat knobs, nameplates and more. There are some truly amazing multi-player cards with up to eight players per card.
Some of the hits included in 2024 Leaf Lumber Baseball include:
Not counting parallels, the checklist for the product approaches 1,000 total cards!
2024 Leaf Lumber Baseball is a high-end product with only four cards per box. But are they a good candidate to buy and hold unopened? Let’s see what recent comp prices for boxes from the last few years can tell us.
Year | Recent Comp Price |
2024 | $200-210 |
2023 | NA |
2022 | $310-320 |
2021 | $180-400 |
Typically, I wouldn’t expect a hit-driven, small-sized, unlicensed box to be a good candidate to buy-and-hold unopened, but despite a 1-year hiatus in 2023, boxes from 2022 and 2021 appear to sell strongly for higher than the release price, although there was one low sale on a 2021 box.
So, these may not be the worst cards to buy-and-hold unopened, although they do feel like a box designed to break.
But what about singles? What can a look at recent comp prices for 2022 Leaf Lumber Baseball (the last year produced) singles tell us about the potential for profit here?
The high water mark was a Giancarlo Stanton 1/1 Game-Used Bat Barrel card that sold for $750. 1/1 Bat Knobs of Stanton and Tony Gwynn approached $475. 1/1 cards of Steve Sax and Curt Flood sold for around $400.
So, the chance to get some solid value exists, for sure. It is far from guaranteed, however. A good number of cards from the set sold for less than $5 shipped.
Every product has pros and cons when deciding whether to purchase and break them. What are some of the pros and cons with 2024 Leaf Lumber Baseball?
Pros
Cons
2024 Leaf Lumber Baseball brings only hits and celebrates the humble baseball bat. Yet the unlicensed nature of the product and the small box size keep this a reasonably priced break.
There’s the chance for some real value here with some great hits, but also a lot of cards that aren’t worth the price of admission.
