Origins started in 2018 as a brand with a heavy focus on rookies — almost half of the set are rookie cards. Along with the rookies, collectors will find some of the league’s brightest stars who make up the other half of this set.
Additionally, this release is notable in that it is the first NFL release this year with rookie autographs of players in professional uniforms.

The release formats for Origins look very similar to last year with one pack available per box. Retail releases see a slight change resulting in one additional card per box/pack.

Panini returns its FOTL boxes for 2022 Origins with an online Dutch Auction. Bidding for these opened on October 27th and prices began at $600. It has an identical format to standard hobby boxes but features FOTL-exclusive purple and pink parallels.

Origins has an eye-popping design along with plenty of rookie autographs. This year’s design draws heavily from the aurora borealis, the scientific name of the northern lights phenomenon. Base cards have a pleasant-looking juxtaposition between the vibrant colors in the front and the dark background.
As mentioned, almost half of the checklist consists of rookies while the other half are established NFL veterans. This presents an excellent opportunity to start collecting some 2022 draft picks. While this class is considered one of the weakest classes in years, there is always the chance some of them turn into superstars.
Each box is expected to have three hits in the form of two autographs and one relic. Some of the rarer short-print cards to chase include 1/1 Printing Plates and 1/1 Gold Ink Inscriptions parallels.

Panini Origins has plenty of autograph and memorabilia versions. The set also includes 10 rookie variations.
The base set comes in at 191 cards, with 101-192 consisting of rookies from the set.

Each Dual Rookies card features autographs from two big-name rookies drafted to the same team.
Silver Ink autographs feature players’ signatures in silver, while the rarer variation showcases them in gold ink.
This insert unites older legends with their younger counterparts. Examples include Trey Lance and Steve Young or Mac Jones and Drew Bledsoe.
Passing Stars consists of every quarterback drafted this year, including those who aren’t on a team anymore. Looking at you, Carson Strong.
This insert features 5 different variations, including base, turquoise, green, gold, and black variations
Receiving Stars includes autographs from some of the top receivers in the 2022 draft.
As you might be able to guess, Rookie Autographs consist of rookie autographs. 42 cards make up the checklist and 8 parallels are available.
Booklet cards resemble a small book with two cards instead of one. These include both a signature and a jersey swatch.
Similar to the Rookie Booklet Patch autographs, except with two rookie teammates featured on each booklet.
Rookie Signatures is similar to Rookie Autographs with a smaller checklist and fewer parallels.
Rushing Stars includes 7 of the big-name running backs drafted this year, including Breece Hall and Kenneth Walker III.
Triple Rookies brings together three rookies from the same position to one card.

28 cards make up this set which has a print run of 99. The design features extremely vibrant colors and a jersey swatch.
This 40-card memorabilia set emphasizes each player’s roots with an outline of their home state.
Rise to the Hall includes memorabilia cards of different Hall of Fame players.
As the name implies, Rookie Jumbo Jerseys have a jumbo-sized jersey swatch on the card.
Rookie Patches are a 30-card memorabilia set with 10 different parallels.
Big Bang is a 50-card insert with a design inspired by a cosmic explosion.
One of the most unique designs Panini has is Blank Slate. It is a white card with nothing printed on it besides the familiar Origins logo, the player, their name, and their team.

One of the big hits in Origins is the Pedigree insert. It consists of 25 cards with a combination of high-profile veterans and rookies.
Team Origins is a 10-card insert that highlights different NFL legends like Dan Marino or John Elway.
Panini markets Origins as a premium product and it is priced accordingly. While $270 isn’t on the high end for typical hobby boxes, keep in mind there are only 7 cards in each Origins box.
With such a low-volume, hit-focused release, determining if Panini Origins is a good investment can be a difficult question to answer.

As we can see, Origins boxes typically increase in value as time passes but with a substantial amount of variance depending on the quality of the rookie class.
A clear example of this is 2020 being an exceptionally strong draft class headlined by Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, and Justin Herbert. The 2019 and 2021 drafts are noticeably weaker than 2020 leading to lower hobby box resale prices.
2022 on the other hand is one of the weakest drafts in recent memory. Only one quarterback was taken in the first round in a rookie class lacking big-name prospects.
A weak rookie class and a product lacking significant market demand lead me to believe that prices will not increase significantly in the coming years.
Due to this fact, I would not recommend investing in 2022 Origins hobby boxes at current prices.

With an emphasis on rookies, finding rookies in Panini Origins is no problem. However, is investing in rookie singles a waste of time?
You won’t make much money on base rookie cards, Origins just doesn’t have the name-brand appeal for it. The money with Origins is in the short print cards, such as this 2021 Trey Lance RC going for $261.
Even then, you are only making a marginal profit over the price of a hobby box if you pulled it. If you do decide to invest in 2022 Origins, prioritize purchasing short-print rookies as those have the highest chance of appreciating in value.

Origins is certainly an aesthetically pleasing brand, but it isn’t the best product for investors. For investing, stick to the big names like Prizm, Optic, or Select.
On the other hand, Origins can be an intriguing product for collectors thanks to it being the first release with rookie autographs in NFL uniforms. If you are a collector who wants to get in on the first cards with official uniforms and understand a relative lack of upside to these cards, this might be the release for you.
